Rethinking Home at the Cooper Hewitt

One crisp November night at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, a joyful Lenape round dance hummed to a crescendo as the sun set over the museum’s garden. Guests at the opening night of Making Home—the design triennial co-curated by Alexandra Cunningham Cameron, Christina L. De León, and Michelle Joan Wilkinson—joined in, growing this circle and adding outside voices to the harmony of Lenape leaders. This gesture towards community was one small piece of a gorgeous, thoughtful exhibition that disassembled as much as it constructed, presenting works as human as they are rigorous and scholarly.

Making Home includes 25 projects, involving over 200 people, that present questions and ideas about what home means, how homes are made, and what homes can do. The Cooper Hewitt is the only Smithsonian museum dedicated to design, with past exhibitions ranging from fashion, architecture, textiles, and furniture—any tool that touches human life. Their program is wide ranging, yet this is the first exhibition that has approached design from such an untraditional point of view. “I think it’s important to acknowledge curatorial work as coming from a place of subjectivity, because it’s a way to talk about bias in culture and contemporary design,” says Cunnningham Cameron.

A Lenape round dance at the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial opening night.

You can’t help but wonder what Andrew Carnegie—the richest man in the world during his lifetime whose home now serves as the Cooper Hewitt’s only location—would think of the use his former home is now put to. When architecture firm Babb, Cook & Willard broke ground on the mansion in 1899, the Upper East Side was relatively desolate as far as residences went—especially for the industrial magnates that made up Carnegie’s peers. Carnegie’s foresight…

UN: The religious authority is keen on Iraq and preserving it from any conflicts

Najaf – INA

The United Nations representative in Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, confirmed today, Thursday, that the religious authority is keen on Iraq and preserving it from any conflicts occurring in the region.

Al-Hassan said, during a press conference held after he met with Mr. Mohammed Redha al-Sistani, which was attended by the correspondent of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “This visit is the second to the city that is close to the hearts of all Muslims, and it included a meeting with Mr. Mohammed Redha al-Sistani. This visit comes within the framework of the ongoing communication between UNAMI and the components in Iraq.”

He added, “We have the utmost respect for Mr. Sistani and his concern for Iraq, its stability, and keeping it away from any conflicts, in addition to the vision that Mr. Sistani presented in the first meeting.”

He pointed out that “the authority is keen on Iraq and preserving it from any conflicts occurring in the region.”

He added, “The religious authority was informed of the meetings held in America regarding Iraq, in addition to discussing ways for Iraq to avoid any conflicts that would harm it,” noting “the existence of direct coordination with UNAMI and the Iraqi government.”

He stressed that “Iraq should not be an arena for settling scores,” noting that “the authority has been informed of the critical conditions in the region and the acceleration of events there, especially in Syria,” indicating that “the United Nations is striving to keep Iraq away from international conflicts to achieve stability and development in Iraq.”

He explained, “We discussed ways and steps to keep Iraq away from the conflicts, disputes and crises that affect Iraq,” stressing that “the situation in the region is dangerous and we trust the leadership in Iraq that it is capable of getting Iraq out of these conflicts.”

He added,…

Canada’s $42 Billion Asset Could Spell Serious Trouble for Toronto Tempo, NBA Legend Warns

Voila! The Toronto WNBA expansion team finally has a name— Toronto Tempo. Set to debut as the league’s 14th franchise in 2026, Tempo will be the WNBA’s first team outside the United States. Team president Teresa Resch described the name, “Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat. And it’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city and in the energy of the people who call Canada home.

While the team seems prepared to hit the ground running, some think Canada might not be entirely ready to have their basketball team.

Gilbert Arenas has a unique take on this. In a recent tweet, shared by Krysta, the former NBA star expressed concerns about travel logistics for the new team. “By 2026, y’all better be flying private. It shouldn’t be all commercial. I’m just saying, commercial flights to Toronto are going to be a motherf—-r with customs. Hopefully, y’all are all private by then,” Arenas said.

He didn’t stop there. “I don’t play no more, so it doesn’t affect me. I’m just saying, charter flights this season, maybe not be the most ideal planes for some teams, and kind of janky travel conditions. But do you think this expansion will really help the league grow? Or will it water things down? I don’t know.”

Arenas might be onto something. Toronto Pearson International Airport has earned a reputation as one of the worst airports in North America for customer satisfaction, despite contributing over $42 billion annually to Ontario’s GDP. According to a JD Power survey, it ranked 20th out of 21 mega-sized airports, scoring 36 points below the average for factors like terminal facilities, baggage claims, security checks, and food options.

And it’s not just one survey. CTV News Toronto also ranked it among the five worst major…

Iraq: Security Council Briefed On Major Milestones And Ongoing Challenges

Thursday, 12 December 2024, 4:48 am
Press Release: UN News

6 December 2024

“As you have heard many times by now, today’s Iraq is not the same as the Iraq of 20 years ago, or even five years ago. Iraq today is more secure, stable and open, despite the many obstacles facing the country,” Mohamed Al Hassan said in his first briefing to ambassadors.

The envoy, who also heads the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), expressed confidence that the country “is capable of overcoming crises and facing challenges towards forging a more secure, bright and hopeful future.”

Nationwide census, major investments

Mr. Al Hassan outlined recent milestones, starting with the successful conduct of the national census last month – the first to include the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region in the north, since 1987.

Preliminary results indicate that Iraq’s population has nearly doubled over the past 30 years, surpassing 45 million, and “decision makers will now be able to plan based on reliable facts and figures.”

Key political appointment

Another key development was the October election of a new Speaker of the Council of Representatives, the Iraqi parliament, “after a year of vacancy and various unsuccessful attempts.”

Additionally, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani continues to invest in major infrastructure projects throughout the country, including building roads, bridges, schools and transportation networks.

Promoting regional peace and integration

“In a region that is ‘on fire’, Iraq’s Government has shown strong resolve to keep the country out of the widening regional conflict, while standing firm as a strong voice for regional peace and stability,” he continued.

The Prime Minister “has consistently called for an end to regional tensions, stressing the need for respect of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Moreover, looking beyond the current conflicts, the Government is also striving to position Iraq…

Caitlin Clark’s Time Award Questioned By Sheryl Swoopes

Indiana Fever star and WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark was recently hailed TIME Magazine’s Athlete of The Year. Fans were delighted and people were happy for Clark, but some people raised questions about her eligibility for the award.

In a recent episode of the “Gil’s Arena” podcast with Gilbert Arenas and co-host Josiah Johnson, former WNBA player and six-time WNBA All-Star Sherly Swoopes expressed her doubts and reservations on the award given to Caitlin Clark.

“I don’t think I’m surprised,” Swoopes said. “I’m curious to know who the other candidates were, but the fact that that’s the very first WNBA player to ever win TIME Magazine Athlete of the Year is pretty special.”

“My question is, the criteria, is it based off of her performance on the court, which she had a great year or is it more about the impact that she had on the game this season?”

Clark was the first WNBA player to be given the TIME Magazine award, and the first solo woman athlete as well. The first receiver of the award in 2019 was the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. Following that, TIME awarded the title to LeBron James (2020), Simone Biles (2021), Aaron Judge (2022), and Lionel Messi (2023).
