ESPN Analyst States Caitlin Clark ‘Is the Needle’ After NBA All-Star Decision

On January 29, it was announced that Indiana Fever icon Caitlin Clark would not be participating in a three-point shooting competition during the NBA All-Star Weekend, which takes place from February 14-16.

It was reported that Clark’s reasoning for this is that she’d prefer to make her three-point shooting competition debut during the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game, which is taking place at the Fever’s home court in Indianapolis.

Clark has received much positive feedback from many within the media (including Stephen A. Smith) for this decision to prioritize her own league over the NBA.

And ESPN analyst Chiney Ogwumike offered her own praise during a January 30 episode of First Take.

“A lot of people say that Caitlin Clark moves the needle. That is wrong. She is the needle,” Ogwumike said, per an X post from First Take.

“She dictates. We all know what she has done on the floor. It’s history, right? But off the floor, my goodness. She and the Indiana Fever accounted for 45% of all the broadcast value of the WNBA last season. She accounted also for helping drive the numbers of merchandising up.

“Most importantly, I think people look at this and think she said no. That’s not the case,” Ogwumike added of Clark’s decision. “She said she wants her first competition to be in Indy, at WNBA All-Star, which to me is huge. People don’t see the numbers below, the economic impact… So I understand her point of view. She wants to probably let other athletes shine… There are previous winners that should probably get an opportunity to compete.

“So I think Caitlin, she moves because she knows people follow her no matter where she goes, and she’s very strategic about dictating where her value is,” she concluded.

Key Takeaways:

  • POLITICS: Sudani Urges Parliament To Support Budget Amendments; Egypt’s PM Visits Baghdad, Signs Twelve New Agreements – On January 29, Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani convened a meeting with the leaders of parliamentary blocs to discuss advancing a proposal to amend parts of the federal budget law concerning oil produced in the Kurdistan region. Sudani urged political leaders to support the amendments his government proposed, aiming to resume the halted oil exports from Kurdistan by offering the regional government better terms for recovering oil production and transportation costs. He stressed that parliament should vote on the exact text sent by the government in November without any alterations. According to a government statement, the political leaders present at the meeting expressed their support for Sudani’s request, and a vote on the budget law amendment has been scheduled for Sunday. On January 30, Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli arrived in Baghdad and met with Sudani to discuss bilateral relations, cooperation, and regional issues of mutual interest. During the visit, Iraq and Egypt signed 12 agreements covering various sectors, including transportation, antitrust regulations, antiquities and museums, stock market oversight, telecommunications, trade, and grain storage. In other developments, on January 24, UNAMI said it was “closely following the latest developments” regarding last week’s parliamentary vote approving controversial amendments to the Personal Status Law. UNAMI emphasized the importance of ensuring that “legal reforms align with Iraq’s international human rights commitments, particularly in relation to safeguarding the rights and well-being of women and children.” more…
  • SECURITY & HUMANITARIAN: Iraqi Border Guards, Civilians Killed in PKK Attack and Turkish Strikes – On January 24, militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) opened fire on Iraqi border guards near the Turkish border in the Batofa subdistrict of Duhok province, killing two and wounding a…

H.S. Girls Basketball: Defense moves Lake-Lehman closer to division title

Jan. 31—NANTICOKE — Nanticoke Area’s defense was fine in the first quarter Thursday night. So was the rebounding.

The Trojanettes’ problem was poor shooting compounded by turnovers. Neither improved in the second quarter as first-place Lake-Lehman rolled to a 51-26 victory in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 girls basketball game.

Lehman (12-0 Div. 2, 15-5) clinched a tie mathematically for the divisional championship. Realistically, the win virtually assured the title since the Black Knights would have to lose their final two divisional games. One of them is against MMI Prep, which they defeated 53-8 a few weeks earlier.

Nanticoke Area (9-3, 11-9) can still tie Holy Redeemer (10-2, 16-4) for second place, a position which would mean a spot in the WVC Tournament on Feb. 12. But even if the teams finish with the same divisional records, Redeemer is nearly certain of winning the tiebreaker — District 2 power rankings.

The Trojanettes missed all 10 of their first-quarter shots and had seven turnovers, yet trailed just 8-1. They then missed five more attempt in the second before Natalee Atkins hit a 3-pointer.

Lehman, though, hadn’t caused much damage to that juncture. That changed with an 8-0 burst as freshman Kinley Purdy, who finished with a career-high 24 points, triggered the Black Knights’ transition offense.

“Just too many halfcourt turnovers in the first half and that was able to get their transition game going,” Nanticoke Area coach Ed Grant said. “I thought that was what burned us most of the game. They’ve consistently done that on film when they get it out and go.”

Nanticoke Area shot slightly better in the second quarter, but finished 3-of-24 shooting in the first half and in a 25-9 hole at halftime. The Trojanettes entered the game with three of the top-seven 3-point shooters in the division. They exited 3-of-29 from…

BKFC Mohegan Sun Features Awesome Main Card Feb. 1

BKFC Mohegan Sun is two days away. A week ago Saturday, it was BKFC KnuckleMania V taking center stage in primetime on DAZN. A total of 17,762 spectators walked through the doors of Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center to see the action.

Official figures from the card indicate that the 17,762 people who paid to see the show made for a new promotional record for a live audience. This week, David Feldman and his staff stay in the East Coast for a trek to Uncasville, CT and Mohegan Sun Arena for BKFC Mohegan Sun as the promotion’s 2025 schedule continues.

Live coverage of Saturday’s event begins with the countdown show at 5 pm ET/ 2 pm PT on the official BKFC YouTube channel before moving onto the two-fight undercard at 6 pm ET/ 3 pm PT on DAZN and YouTube. The main card caps the evening at 7 pm ET/ 4 pm PT.  If there are no 11th-hour postponements between now and Saturday night, the final version of BKFC Mohegan Sun will feature an 11-fight bare-knuckle boxing card.

Must-See Fights on BKFC Mohegan Sun’s Main Card Saturday

We’ve already discussed the undercard previously, but now it’s time for us to talk about the main card. There are a number of noteworthy contests taking place on that portion of the event, so why waste any more time and start talking about it?

Note: All fights in BKFC are five rounds at two minutes per round.

BKFC Mohegan Sun Main Event: Julian Lane vs. Cameron VanCamp

At the top of the bill on Saturday night is a contest in the welterweight division (165 lbs) between Julian Lane (7-7 bare-knuckle, 5-6 BKFC) and Cameron VanCamp

Dog killed in N.J. crash, owner now facing animal cruelty charge

A 46-year-old Warren County man is charged with animal cruelty after repeatedly allowing his dogs to roam loose, resulting in an accident in Blairstown that left one of the animals dead, police said.

David Black, 46, of Hardwick Township is facing the third-degree charge by New Jersey State Police. State police also investigated the case.

Blairstown Township Police Chief Scott Johnsen said Black was warned multiple times in the past to keep his dogs contained or on a leash. The dogs have been found in the roadway by investigators during past incidents, Johnsen said.

Around 7 p.m. Monday, a car struck one of Black’s two dogs along Mohican Road in Blairstown, the chief said.

Officers found one dog severely injured and the other uninjured, according to police. Johnsen said the injured dog succumbed to injuries at the scene.

Also responding to the accident was Blairstown’s Animal Control Officer Robert Lagonera who transported the uninjured dog to an animal hospital for a medical evaluation, police said.

Black has been cited by both the Blairstown and Newton Animal Control Office, contracted by Hardwick Township, with over 20 counts of dogs at large in recent months, according to Johnsen.

Officers spent countless hours trying to catch the loose dogs, but often could not, as the dogs refused to allow them near, the chief said. Johnsen said Black ignored suggestions by officers to keep the dogs properly contained.

The surviving dog now is being fostered, pending an upcoming court hearing, police said.

Greater Nanticoke Area planning demolition of vacant Lincoln school building

The Greater Nanticoke Area School District plans to demolish the vacant Lincoln Elementary School building on Kosciusko Street in Nanticoke, Superintendent Ronald Grevera said, noting the “building has become an eyesore in the community and a potential safety hazard.”

The school board voted Jan. 9 to begin the demolition process. Board President Tony Prushinski appointed a committee of the board “to take the building down after the brutal fire” that engulfed the former Pulaski school on Market Street in Glen Lyon in late December, Grevera said.

After that fire, Prushinski insisted the old Lincoln school building “be demolished due to the proximity to” the Greater Nanticoke Elementary Center on the district school campus along Kosciusko Street, Grevera said.

The former Pulaski school closed in 1980 and had been under construction for years as part of a developer’s plan to create 29 luxury loft apartments at the property.

The Lincoln Elementary School building opened in 1913 and remained in use until 2001. The board will solicit bids in the future for the demolition after the district works with Verizon and T-Mobile to remove cell towers on the building, Grevera said.

Also at the Jan. 9 meeting, the board voted to limit any potential property tax increase this year to 6.1% – the index amount set by the state to limit property tax increases in the school district. School officials “don’t anticipate having to raise taxes this year,” Grevera said.

The school board is required to propose a budget for 2025-26 by the end of May and adopt a final budget for 2025-26 by the end of June. School districts must either seek voter approval in a referendum or get state approval for allowed spending exemptions if they want a tax increase that exceeds the index amount.
