Faculty, alumni art exhibition opens at LCCC

No Comments on Faculty, alumni art exhibition opens at LCCC

Luzerne County Community College held its opening ceremony for the 2025 faculty and alumni art exhibition in the Schulman Gallery. The exhibition, which is open through Feb. 21, features an array of artworks recently created by LCCC faculty and alumni, including paintings, illustrations, photographer, mixed-media and digital art.

The gallery is located on the campus of Luzerne County Community College in Building #14-Campus Center, 2nd Floor in Nanticoke. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

PLAINS TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two men are facing charges after police say they tried to steal a vehicle in the parking lot of Mohegan Pennsylvania casino.

According to the Plains Township Police Department, on January 21, around 2:20 a.m., officers were called to Mohegan Pennsylvania for a report of a car theft in progress.

Security officers told police two men, Henry Pena-Acosta, 27, of Scranton, and Jose Rodriguez, 23, of New York, were traveling around the casino parking lot when they stopped and tried to steal a parked car, damaging the lock, according to court records.

Man arrested after hit-and-run sent woman to hospital

Officers said they quickly followed the car into Wilkes-Barre until they hit a dead end where the pair exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Pena-Acosta and Rodriguez were eventually caught and arrested. Investigators stated inside the stolen Honda, they found six key fobs, a magnetic pen, and a ratchet.

Pena-Acosta was charged with receiving stolen property, criminal conspiracy to commit theft, evading arrest, and driving without a license.

Rodriguez was charged with criminal conspiracy to commit theft, and evading arrest.

Pena-Acosta and Rodriguez remain in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility on a $25,000 bail, each.

The community investment contributions demonstrate the Pokagon Band’s commitment to the city of South Bend and the region, as well as organizations that focus on the needs of Native Americans.

Organizations that received contributions include:

Beacon Children’s Hospital – $50,000 to support medical care for children.

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County – $20,000 to support before- and after-school programs.
Cultivate Food Rescue – $20,000 to provide meals and support the organization’s backpack program.

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a presidential memorandum to move forward with federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, a people with a storied history who have been advocating tirelessly to be recognized by the federal government.

“Oh, I love the Lumbee Tribe,” Trump said Thursday as he signed the memo, confirming that the document is a “first big step” toward getting them the full federal recognition they have long been fighting for.

“They were with me all the way. They were great. North Carolina, Lumbee Tribe,” the president said. Trump won the state of North Carolina during the 2024 presidential elections, garnering 50.9% of the votes compared to Kamala Harris’s 47.6%. He also won the state by a much tighter margin in 2020.

Notably, Trump won Robeson County in 2024 with 59% of the county’s vote. Robeson County is home to the Lumbee Tribe’s headquarters. The county was historically a Democratic stronghold.

Who are the Lumbee People?

The tribe’s official website states that the Lumbee people were brought to southeastern North Carolina by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. The tribe’s ancestors were “survivors” of tribal nations from the Iroquoian, Siouan and Algonquian language families.

Indiana Fever icon Caitlin Clark celebrated her 23rd birthday on January 22.

While Clark has already produced a legendary career with countless accolades, perhaps the most fascinating part of her story is that she seemingly still has room to improve.

Clark is best known for her three-point shooting ability. But considering that the 34.4% three-point percentage she shot during her rookie season with the Fever is beneath her 37.7% mark from college, the assumption is that she’ll shoot much better from range this year after having a full offseason and fresh legs under her.

And seems off to a good start in that regard, as she celebrated her birthday on Wednesday by draining a whopping 50 of 54 shots from three-point range, as per the Indiana Fever’s X post.

Clark has been compared to Golden State Warriors legend Steph Curry numerous times; largely due to their elite shooting. And this video brought Curry to mind for multiple reasons.

One is that he drained over 100 consecutive three-pointers during a practice in 2023, which went viral on social media. Clark’s insane accuracy on Wednesday was akin to that extraordinary display.

The other reason Clark’s video brought Curry to mind is that they’re rumored to be competing against each other in a three-point shooting contest during NBA All-Star weekend, along with Sabrina Ionescu and Klay Thompson.

Therefore, some fans are seeing this as Clark’s way of showing Curry that she’s already on her game.

MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR

SUBJECT: Federal Recognition of the Lumbee Tribe of North

Carolina

Section 1. Purpose and Policy. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, known as the People of the Dark Water, have a long and storied history. The tribe’s members were descendants of several tribal nations from the Algonquian, Iroquoian, and Siouan language families, including the Hatteras, the Tuscarora, and the Cheraw. The waters of the Lumbee River and lands that surround it have protected and provided for the Lumbee people for centuries despite war, disease, and many other perils.

In 1885, the State of North Carolina recognized the Lumbee people as an Indian tribe. 1885 N.C. Sess. Laws 92. In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Lumbee Act (Public Law 84-570, 70 Stat. 254), which recognized the Lumbee as the Lumbee Indians of North Carolina but denied Lumbee Indians Federal benefits associated with such recognition. Today, according to the State of North Carolina, the Lumbee Tribe consists of more than 55,000 members, making it the largest tribe east of the Mississippi River and the ninth-largest tribe in the Nation.

In 2024, the United States House of Representatives passed, by a vote of 311-96, the Lumbee Fairness Act (H.R. 1101), which would grant the Lumbee Tribe full Federal recognition, but this legislation was not considered by the United States Senate before the end of the 118th Congress. Similar legislation has passed the House of Representatives several times.

Considering the Lumbee Tribe’s historical and modern significance, it is the policy of the United States to support the full Federal recognition, including the authority to receive full Federal benefits, of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

Nanticoke Area wrestler Sierra Ripka secured the 172-pound title at the Coal Cracker Girls Invitational on Saturday at Lehighton High School.

After a dominant first three matches, where she compiled three first-period pins, the junior earned a 7-4 decision over Panther Valley’s Alisa Williams in the semifinals and a 3-2 decision over Palisades’ Bryce Snyder, who is ranked second in the state according to pa-wrestling.com, for the title.

Ripka, ranked fourth in the state, secured a first-period takedown in the final for a 3-0 lead. Snyder answered with a reversal with 10 seconds left in the first period. Ripka spent the second and third period on bottom, and didn’t allow Snyder to turn her to secure the win.

Wyoming Valley West’s Isabella Seip went 5-1 to place second at 120. The senior compiled three first-period pins, a 7-3 decision and a 15-12 sudden victory decision to reach the final.

Ranked fifth in the state, Seip lost by fall to Palisades’ Savannah Witt, a defending state champion who is ranked No. 1 in the state.

Elsewhere in District 2, Crestwood’s Rachel Shoemaker (126), Delaware Valley’s Kate Prior (157) and Honesdale’s Jaidyn Mikulak (237) placed third; Honesdale’s Maddison Miller (144) and Wyoming Valley West’s Brooke Long (157) placed fourth; Western Wayne’s Mia Gifford (108), Nanticoke Area’s Emily Kivler (120) and Hazleton Area’s Mia Molinaro (138) placed fifth; Hanover Area’s Claire Gyle (102) and Santina Saraka (108) and Wallenpaupack’s Alayna Atos (138) placed sixth; and Hanover Area’s Morgan Osburn (102), Hazleton Area’s Lynzee Andreuzzi (132) and Crestwood’s Samara Bailey (237) finished eighth.
