FANA Appoints Formal Consul General to UK and Northern Ireland to Establish Financial Institution

The Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas (FANA) is proud to announce the appointment of Mr. Mark Goodwin as its Formal Consul General to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.

He will be reporting to His Excellency Ambassador Mark Taylor O.H.E, Prof. PH.D., and His Excellency Ambassador Douglas Scott. Ambassador Taylor serves as Chief Inspector for human rights and economic action with OADO ECOSCO UNITED NATIONS, while Ambassador Scott holds the position of FANA’s Ambassador to the Commonwealth. Area residents warned of threatening scam

NEW BETHLEHEM – A Clarion County man with more than 40 years in law enforcement said this week that he has encountered still another example of how “creative” some people can be in trying to scam unsuspecting victims into giving away money or other valuables.

Rex Munsee, who served with the Pennsylvania State Police for more than 27 years before being elected to three terms as Clarion County Sheriff, said he has learned of a new ploy that involves using the computer to try to scam others into giving Bitcoin to the scam artists.

In at least one example of how this latest ploy was attempted against a county resident, Munsee said the perpetrator, using a false identity, sent an email to a local resident, warning, “If you don’t cooperate … don’t even try to hide from this. You have no idea what I’m capable of …”

Munsee went to to state that the scammer’s message got even more threatening, including “I suggest you read this message carefully. … We’re about to discuss a deal between you and me, and I ain’t playing games. You do not know me but I know EVERYTHING about you and you must be thinking how. Correct?”

The letter — and a second letter that came to the same recipient about three weeks later — continued, “Well, you’ve been treading on thin ice with your [computer] browsing habits, clicking through those girls videos and venturing into the darker corners of cyberspace. I actually placed malware on a porn website and you accessed it to watch (know what I mean?). And when you got busy enjoying our videos, your system started operating as a RDP (Remote Protocol) which gave me complete control over your divide. I can peep at everything on…

A Hiker’s Path: Solitude and stillness at Lake Lenape in Shakamak State Park

I find an inherent stillness in the woods during winter. It can be a very tranquil experience.

I often revisit places that I have previously hiked at this time of year. I especially love the state parks in the winter months. I recently made a trip down to Shakamak State Park.

Shakamak, the seventh state park in Indiana, was established in 1929 on a tract of land donated to the state by Clay, Greene and Sullivan counties.

The 56-acre Lake Shakamak was created using an abandoned railroad as a dam. Lake Lenape, a 49-acre impoundment initially named Lake Jason, was created in 1933, while the 290-acre Lake Kickapoo became a reality in the ’60s. Shakamak and Lenape’s waters overflow in Lake Kickapoo, which runs off in the Big Branch Creek. The park consists of 1,766 acres in total and has seven hiking trails.

It’s located off of West Ind. 48 near Jasonville.

“Shakamak” is a Kickapoo word meaning “river of the long fish” (eels). Although absent in the lakes because the dams cut the natural water flow from all three of them, fresh water eels are found in the nearby Eel and Wabash rivers.

The Lake Lenape loop was my chosen trail for the day. I would have to hike two trails to complete the loop.

Trail 3 is 1.4 miles in length and takes the hiker through an oak forest along the north shore of Lake Lenape to the camp store. It intersects with Trail 4, which is 1.6 miles in length and follows a path through oak trees and pines.

Bridges and stairs along the path add to the fun. Both trails are considered moderate in ease of hiking.

Biden Commutes Peltier Sentence

Shortly before leaving office, President Joe Biden commuted Leonard Peltier’s life sentence to indefinite house arrest following decades of community activists fighting for his release.

“It’s finally over – I’m going home,” Peltier said in a press release from NDN Collective. “I want to show the world I’m a good person with a good heart. I want to help the people, just like my grandmother taught me.”

Peltier, an 80-year-old member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa who is experiencing declining health, has spent nearly fifty years in prison for the murder of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

“Leonard Peltier has been serving a sentence based on a conviction that would not hold up in court today and for a crime that the government has admitted it could not prove,” NDN Collective said in a letter demanding Peltier’s release days before Biden commuted his sentence.

The NDN Collective letter was signed by 124 tribal leaders including four headquartered in Oklahoma: Muscogee Creek Nation Principal Chief David Hill, Otoe Missouria Tribe Counsel Wilson Pipestem, Delaware Tribe Chief Brad Kills Crow and Cheyenne Arapaho Governor Reggie Wassana.

Before Peltier’s commutation, federal lawmakers had also called on Biden to take action.

“Serious concerns have been raised regarding the fairness of his (Peltier’s) trial and incarceration,” Democrat lawmakers said in a Dec. 2024 letter to President Joe Biden. “Calls for his release have also received sweeping support from civil liberties and human rights organizations.”

“The power to exercise mercy in this case lies solely within your discretion, and we urge you to grant Mr. Peltier clemency, allowing him to return home and live out his remaining days among his own people.”

Oklahoma’s Congressional delegation did not sign the letter nor did they release statements following Biden’s decision to commute Peltier’s sentence.
