Potawatomi to reclaim tribal land in DeKalb County

SPRINGFIELD – More than 175 years after their reservation in Illinois was illegally sold at auction, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is now in line to get their land back.

Gov. JB Pritzker signed legislation Friday authorizing the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to hand over to the tribe the ownership title to Shabbona Lake State Park, a 1,500-acre tract in southern DeKalb County that largely overlaps the tribe’s original reservation.

Nanticoke man charged after ramming police vehicles during chase

A 23-year-old Nanticoke man faces charges after officers said he struck police cars with his vehicle during a high-speed chase after fleeing a traffic stop.

Members of the Lackawanna County Drug Task Force met with a confidential informant Thursday at about 1:50 p.m. to discuss heroin and crack cocaine sales, and the informant told officers about a man identified as “Brail,” according to the criminal complaint.

Officers conducted surveillance on Monahan Avenue in Dunmore and gave the informant money to purchase drugs, police said.

The suspect — later identified as Jabrail Crumbley — arrived at the location in a Ford Explorer. Then, when the informant exited Crumbley’s SUV, officers attempted to stop the vehicle for the narcotics transaction by using emergency lights and sirens with two fully marked patrol units and three unmarked patrol vehicles, according to the criminal complaint.

Crumbley rammed his vehicle into police cars and led officers on a pursuit that ended on the Casey Highway, officers said.

Throughout the pursuit, Crumbley ran his vehicle into police vehicles three times, according to the complaint. He also drove into oncoming traffic at speeds exceeding 100 mph, officers said.

Crumbley was treated by medical personnel on scene and refused further treatment, police said.

A Dunmore police officer suffered minor injuries and was sent to a hospital for evaluation after the chase led to a three-vehicle crash, according to the complaint.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the vehicle after smelling a strong odor of marijuana, and found marijuana, codeine liquid, drug paraphernalia, packaging materials and three cellphones, along with the money used in the drug transaction, police said.

The informant also turned over crack cocaine and heroin to police from the drug transaction, officers said.

Police charged Crumbley with aggravated assault, fleeing or attempting…

In Memoriam: Frances P. Wayman

In Memoriam

Frances P. Wayman
1926-2025

FRANCES P. WAYMAN
(Photo provided)

HARTWICK—Frances P. Wayman, a Hartwick native, died peacefully at home on March 21, 2025.  Frances, the youngest of 10 children, was born on June 24, 1926 at her family’s farm on the top of Scotch Hill to Anton and Mary Zupevec of Austria. After her family moved to North Street, Frances walked across the field to Hartwick High School, graduating the only girl in a class of five.

Frances met her future husband, Douglas F. Wayman, when they both worked at Mohican Florist in Cooperstown. They were married on May 19, 1945. Frances and Doug purchased their present home on School Street in Hartwick, where they raised their two children, Kenneth and Linda.

Frances’ passion for cooking led her to 25 years as a cafeteria cook, first at Hartwick High School and Grade Center, then retiring from Cooperstown Elementary School after the Hartwick school’s closure. She is still known by many of Hartwick’s community as “the cafeteria lady” who always made sure neither her students nor staff left hungry!

During the summer, Frances enjoyed entertaining friends at the family’s camp on Canadarago Lake. She was an expert seamstress whose talents were often sought out by the community. Frances was an avid gardener. Included among the vegetables were the special pole beans from Yugoslavia, brought to this country by her sister. A reunion favorite, always requested, were her baked beans. In retirement, Frances enjoyed caring for her senior siblings, exercise classes and other activities with her lifelong neighborhood friends.

In 2004, after 59 years of marriage, Frances lost the love of her life, Doug, and in 2018 her daughter, Linda Alessi, of Long Island. Frances is survived by her son, Kenneth Wayman; son-in-law Dan Alessi;…

Ellington caps off perfect season with Division IV boys basketball title, first since 1972

UNCASVILLE – Ellington boys basketball coach Bob Freitas didn’t talk about it, the Knights’ season-long win streak.

The pressure built up all season. They had close games and managed to pull out wins. They won the NCCC championship, knocking off four-time defending champion SMSA. They were still unbeaten heading into the Division IV state championship game against Sheehan, the No. 23 seed, Sunday at Mohegan Sun.

So when Ellington had broken open a close game in the fourth quarter and sailed to its 27th win in 27 games, 55-39 over Sheehan, Freitas was handed the championship plaque. He held over his head as the Ellington fans cheered and cheered, and there was relief and joy, all mixed together.

It was Ellington’s first state championship in boys basketball since 1972.

“People talked about it and I didn’t – having no losses isn’t easy for a young group,” Freitas said. “I thought the kids were tremendous. When I got the trophy, I was just emotional. I want them to succeed.”

Sophomore Jack Curtis led top-seeded Ellington (27-0) with 19 points and four steals. Only one senior, Andrew Flickenschild, started for the Knights and he had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Dylan Killoran joined Flickenschild under the basket collecting rebounds (he had eight). Freshman Reese Nicol also had eight boards, to go along with nine points. Sophomore Ty Fieldhouse racked up eight rebounds.

“It was crazy,” Flickenschild said. “There’s nothing like it. I can’t compare it to anything I’ve ever done. It hasn’t settled in.”

The game was close throughout. Rey Rodriguez, who led Sheehan with 23 points and nine rebounds, threw down a dunk toward the end of the first half and Sheehan led 20-19, but Ellington retook the lead with a basket by Flickenschild and a free throw from Curtis, heading into the…
