Wisconsin women who made history

March 7, 2025 Marci Glaus

The PBS Wisconsin Education collections The Look Back and Wisconsin Biographies provide important stories of women who have made history in our state. From the first public school teacher in Wisconsin to a bowling shirt icon, women from Wisconsin have contributed their time and talents even before Wisconsin was a state. Celebrate Women’s History Month by learning about and sharing these great stories.

Electa Quinney: Mohican Teacher and Mentor

Electa Quinney was a Mohican educator and mentor who is known to many as Wisconsin’s first public school teacher. She taught both Native and non-Native students together and led her community with generosity and a commitment to education for all. This telling of Quinney’s story starts many years before her birth, when her ancestors were forced to leave their homelands in the East, and follows her to the area in Wisconsin that is now the present-day home of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians.

A Stitch in Time

Using a needle and thread was considered a necessary household skill for girls and women in the 1800s. They made samplers to practice stitches and show off what they could do. Margaret Miekel’s sampler helps us stitch together the living and learning in the area before Wisconsin was officially a state!

Carrie Frost: Fly Fishing Boss

Carrie Frost was a fly fishing entrepreneur who paved the way for other female business owners in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Even though women could not vote and in many cases could not own property, Frost created a successful manufacturing company and gave over 150 Stevens Point women a chance to earn wages at a time when they were…

If you find traditional gourmand fragrances sickly, I urge you to try these 5 unusual ‘umami’ perfumes

If you love a sweet scent, then the best perfumes of 2025 so far won’t disappoint. One of the biggest fragrance trends of the year has come in the form of a new wave of gourmand scentsfoodie fragrances with unexpected notes like cherry, basil, and honey. Of course, classic notes like vanilla and citrus are still dominating, but if you typically find these kinds of scents to be a little saccharine for your tastes, then you’re in luck, as a new wave of savoury perfumes is also set to tempt our senses this year.

A recent trend report from The Fragrance Shop in collaboration with CPL Aromas highlights this shift to neo-gourmands as being one of the biggest trends of the year, with milky notes like coffee and matcha reigning supreme, as well as a more unlikely category, which piqued my interest… Umami perfumes.

“Umami notes are very much like umami food ingredients,” explains Bee Shapiro, founder and director of Ellis Brooklyn. “They usually have an addictiveness that is unexpected—often salty and very savoury.” From olive oil and tomato to sesame, nuts and rice, umami perfumes are a real departure from what we typically consider a gourmand scent.

“The trend is really led by playfulness and innovation in scent,” continues Shapiro. “We have had so many sweet gourmand fragrances that it’s fun for perfumers and fragrance houses to try out different elements of gourmand, and there has been a lot of innovation in food-type notes.” And it doesn’t just end there. Shapiro predicts that this umami trend will expand to beverages too: “Whether it’s milky boba teas, Japanese tea blends or more takes on coffee notes.”

So, if you’re looking for a…

Take a Trip to Timbuctoo at Ocean County Library

WORLDLY: Guy Weston will share on New Jersey’s free black community pre-Civil War.(Supplied Photo)

The Ocean County Library presents a program about a remarkable New Jersey locale that presaged civil rights 50 years after the Revolutionary War. “Timbuctoo: New Jersey’s Free Black Community before the Civil War” will be presented in the Bishop Building of the Toms River branch on Wednesday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m.

Guy Weston, managing director of the Timbuctoo Historical Society, will detail the Burlington County community’s settlement in 1826, the people who enabled its formation and significant episodes such as its role in the Underground Railroad system. The group’s research reveals that its peak population was about 125, and today consists of 19 households within 50 acres.

The Timbuctoo Historical Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 2019 to “seek, document, preserve, interpret and perpetuate the history and heritage of Timbuctoo.”

Weston’s work encompasses research and public history initiatives to raise the profile of Timbuctoo, where his fourth-great-grandfather purchased land in 1829. Weston’s efforts include interpretive signage in the village, educational collaborations with local teachers and preservation of the Timbuctoo cemetery, where the oldest gravestone bears a date of 1847.

He serves as editor of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Journal, a contributing writer to the AAHGS Journal and AAHGS News, and a visiting scholar at Rutgers University.

To register, visit tinyurl.com/OclTimbuctoo.  For more details, call the branch at 1-732-349-6200.
