Native American tribes focus of presentation

A presentation focusing on Native American tribes is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Main Street Chapel & Events at 911 Clyde St. in Wampum.

Presented by Brady J. Crytzer, the topics will include the diversity of western Pennsylvania’s 18th-century Native American communities and their rich and turbulent history. These tribes consist of the Lenape, Shawnee and others. Included are their tribal lands now known as Lawrence County, tribal conflicts and leaders, including Tanacharision and King Beaver. Also discussed will be the mass Native American migrations of the 1740s in western Pennsylvania, the westward movements of early white settlers and their impacts on the region’s history.

Baseball Recap: Mid Valley Picks Up Sixth Straight Win at Home

Suggested Video

Spartans

05/20/25 vs Greater Nanticoke Area 15
03/24/25 vs Blue Ridge 15
05/06/25 @ Holy Cross 11
05/03/25 vs Lakeland 10
04/22/25 vs Honesdale 10

With a playoff win on the line, Mid Valley rose to the challenge on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Greater Nanticoke Area Trojans with a sharp 15-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won 14 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Nick Mills was incredible, firing off two home runs, four RBI, and one stolen base while going 3-for-3. That’s the most hits he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Anthony Balashaitis, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Mid Valley pushed their record up to 17-4 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Greater Nanticoke Area, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 11 of their last 12 contests. That’s put a noticeable dent in their 3-18 record this season.

Mid Valley will be playing at home against Scranton Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Greater Nanticoke Area does not have any more games scheduled as of now.

AI talking trees feature at Chelsea Flower Show

Talking trees powered by AI, drought-resistant crops and sweet potatoes sprouting among flowers — the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show is facing the future with a focus on innovation and climate-change adaptation.

Over five days starting Tuesday, more than 140,000 visitors are expected to view what the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) bills as “the pinnacle of horticultural excellence”.

There are stunning gardens, 30 competing for top awards, and more than 400 exhibitors showcasing their gardening knowledge and carefully-cultivated plants to the public and champagne-sipping VIPs.

King Charles III was to visit Monday with Queen Camilla, with an eye on the show’s first ever dog garden, designed by celebrity gardener Monty Don.

The head of state was also expected to visit the Wildlife Trusts’ British Rainforests garden where the main attraction is a 50-year-old fern that once thrived in the Great Park of Windsor.

The garden was “inspired by the enchanted forests of Arthurian legend” and it “rekindles the wild and wet woodlands that once swathed vast landscapes along the west coast”.

– Intelligent Garden –

In the Intelligent Garden, plant-lovers can truly talk to the trees thanks to artificial intelligence.

Pioneering AI sensors called Treetalk have been installed to give updates on the trees’ needs in urban environments, whether they are under stress and how to care for them.

“Urban trees filter air pollution, cool the air, support wildlife, and boost community wellbeing. Yet, they face immense challenges,” the RHS said about the garden designed by Tom Massey and architect Je Ahn.

About 50 percent of urban trees do not survive beyond 10 years and up to 30 percent die in their first year, it added.

“The use of AI is not going to replace a human being, our intuition and our labour. It’s still the core and heart of this garden,” said Je Ahn.

But data could give “a clearer picture of…

Kyra Birmingham | Onward State

Penn State men’s basketball will play Providence on November 22 in a neutral-site game as part of the Hall of Fame Showcase, it was announced Wednesday.

The game is part of a doubleheader set to be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Boston University and Harvard will play one another in the other game.

It was first reported in April the Nittany Lions and Friars would square off, but no date was announced.

Mike Rhoades is entering his third season as head coach of the Nittany Lions. Penn State finished last season with a disappointing 16-17 record. Providence ended the 2024-25 campaign with a 21-14 record and a .500 record in the Big East.

The Nittany Lions and Friars have only faced each other three times in program history, with Penn State holding a 2-1 record. The most recent matchup came in 2012, when the blue and white won 55-52 in overtime.

Penn State last played at Mohegan Sun Arena in November of 2016, where it lost to Duke and Cincinnati in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
