AI talking trees feature at Chelsea Flower Show

Talking trees powered by AI, drought-resistant crops and sweet potatoes sprouting among flowers — the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show is facing the future with a focus on innovation and climate-change adaptation.

Over five days starting Tuesday, more than 140,000 visitors are expected to view what the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) bills as “the pinnacle of horticultural excellence”.

There are stunning gardens, 30 competing for top awards, and more than 400 exhibitors showcasing their gardening knowledge and carefully-cultivated plants to the public and champagne-sipping VIPs.

King Charles III was to visit Monday with Queen Camilla, with an eye on the show’s first ever dog garden, designed by celebrity gardener Monty Don.

The head of state was also expected to visit the Wildlife Trusts’ British Rainforests garden where the main attraction is a 50-year-old fern that once thrived in the Great Park of Windsor.

The garden was “inspired by the enchanted forests of Arthurian legend” and it “rekindles the wild and wet woodlands that once swathed vast landscapes along the west coast”.

– Intelligent Garden –

In the Intelligent Garden, plant-lovers can truly talk to the trees thanks to artificial intelligence.

Pioneering AI sensors called Treetalk have been installed to give updates on the trees’ needs in urban environments, whether they are under stress and how to care for them.

“Urban trees filter air pollution, cool the air, support wildlife, and boost community wellbeing. Yet, they face immense challenges,” the RHS said about the garden designed by Tom Massey and architect Je Ahn.

About 50 percent of urban trees do not survive beyond 10 years and up to 30 percent die in their first year, it added.

“The use of AI is not going to replace a human being, our intuition and our labour. It’s still the core and heart of this garden,” said Je Ahn.

But data could give “a clearer picture of…

Kyra Birmingham | Onward State

Penn State men’s basketball will play Providence on November 22 in a neutral-site game as part of the Hall of Fame Showcase, it was announced Wednesday.

The game is part of a doubleheader set to be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Boston University and Harvard will play one another in the other game.

It was first reported in April the Nittany Lions and Friars would square off, but no date was announced.

Mike Rhoades is entering his third season as head coach of the Nittany Lions. Penn State finished last season with a disappointing 16-17 record. Providence ended the 2024-25 campaign with a 21-14 record and a .500 record in the Big East.

The Nittany Lions and Friars have only faced each other three times in program history, with Penn State holding a 2-1 record. The most recent matchup came in 2012, when the blue and white won 55-52 in overtime.

Penn State last played at Mohegan Sun Arena in November of 2016, where it lost to Duke and Cincinnati in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.

Make It Two in a Row for Wyoming Area

Warriors

04/09/25 @ MMI Preparatory School 17
04/01/25 vs Wyoming Valley West 13
03/29/25 @ Dunmore 13
04/29/25 @ Greater Nanticoke Area 12
05/13/25 vs Greater Nanticoke Area 10

Wyoming Area came out on top against Old Forge on Wednesday thanks in part to the team’s impressive four-run third inning. The Warriors’ pitcher stepped up to hand the Blue Devils an 8-0 shutout. The Warriors might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by eight runs or more this season.

Not much got past Alexa Gasek, who gave up just three hits to keep Old Forge off the board. Gasek has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn’t given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Marissa Giardina was excellent, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. That’s the most runs she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Josie Kivak, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Wyoming Area hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.

The win made it two in a row for Wyoming Area and bumps their season record up to 10-8. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 0 runs in those games. As for Old Forge, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-10.

Wyoming Area has already played their next matchup (against MMI Preparatory School), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Old Forge, they will face off against Forest City at 7:00 p.m. on the 22nd.

In Baghdad, Guterres affirms UN will never forget staff killed in Canal Hotel attack

António Guterres was speaking during a wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial in Baghdad to honour the victims of the 19 August 2003 Canal Hotel bombing – the worst terrorist attack in UN history.

Twenty-two people were killed, including the then UN Special Representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.  More than 100 others were injured, and several survivors attended the ceremony.

Families still mourning

Mr. Guterres told the audience that “22 years is a long time, but we will never forget the colleagues who were killed that day in the bombing at the Canal Hotel.”

These staff members “were sons, daughters, mothers, fathers and friends who are, to this day, mourned by those they knew and loved,” he said.

“We will always remember their leader, Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was also killed in the attack. We will stand with the survivors whose lives were changed forever,” he added.

“And we will remember the courageous colleagues and others who rushed to help on that terrible day, and in the days and weeks after — showing us the very best of the humanitarian spirit.”

A tribute and reminder

Mr. Guterres said the memorial stands as a tribute to their lives and their contributions to the people of Iraq.  It also serves as a reminder of how far the country has come since 2003.

He noted that the women and men of the United Nations have worked tirelessly together with the brave and resilient people of Iraq to support their quest for stability, development and peace.

He stressed that above all, the memorial is “a clear reminder of the vital work that our organization does around the world — and the dangers our people face in carrying out that work.”

Remembering humanitarians worldwide

Five years after the attack the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian…

Seneca Has No Trouble Against Lenape

Suggested Video

Seneca lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Lenape, but it’s fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Thursday’s contest. The Golden Eagles were the clear victors by a 17-11 margin over the Indians on Thursday. This was payback for the Golden Eagles, who suffered a 4-2 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Emily Buddendorf

05/15/25 @ Lenape 5
05/07/25 @ Winslow Township 4
04/26/24 vs Paul VI 4
05/12/25 vs Bishop Eustace Prep 3
04/28/25 vs Cherry Hill West 3

Seneca got a massive performance out of Emily Buddendorf, who went 5-for-6 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those five hits gave Buddendorf a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Heller, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

They weren’t the only ones making solid contact: Seneca kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.

Seneca has been performing well recently as they’ve won four of their last five matches. That’s provided a nice bump to their 6-10 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for Lenape, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-9.

Coincidentally, Seneca and Lenape will both be playing Paul VI the next time they take the field. The Indians will head out to face the Eagles at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, while the Golden Eagles will host them on Monday.
