Bacteria levels prompt boil water advisory for Hagersville village, Nanticoke steelworks

Grand Erie Public Health has issued a boil water advisory for a village near Hagersville and an industrial section of Nanticoke that includes part of Stelco’s Lake Erie steelworks.

“Public  health has been advised of water samples that indicate the presence of  bacteria in the water,” the health unit said in a statement on Thursday.

The advisory covers White Oaks Village and the Nanticoke Business Park.

The  health unit recommends all affected water users switch to bottled water  or boil tap water for at least one minute before consuming for any  purpose, including drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, cooking or  preparing infant formula and juice.

White Oaks Village is a  123-acre property on Army Camp Road, southwest of Hagersville. During  the Second World War, the area was the site of a Royal Canadian Air  Force training school. Some of the military housing still standing when  the camp closed in the 1960s formed the basis of the present village.

More recently, the property has been beset by flooding, leaking waterlines, and disputes with the county over unpaid taxes and water bills.

The  health unit told The Spectator the boil water advisory also includes  the Hagersville Airport and Business Park beside White Oaks Village, and  the surrounding businesses.

Nanticoke  Business Park refers to businesses on Hawk Street and Field Road in  Nanticoke, plus some nearby businesses on Highway 3, the health unit  said.

The advisory includes a Stelco pickle line on Hawk Street, part of the steelmaker’s Lake Erie Works.

In total, 20 businesses and 36 homes are affected by the advisory, the health unit said.

More tips for safe water use during a boil water advisory can be found at hnhu.org/boilwateradvisory.

“The  advisory is expected to remain in place until two consecutive sets of  water quality test results confirm a return to normal…

Restroom ‘alleged’ trespasser wants to withdraw guilty plea

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=3N2qlx_14REc2kn00

WILKES-BARRE — A criminal case thought to be resolved may get new legs.

Robert Kowaleski, 39, through his attorney, Scott K. Hampton, filed a motion seeking to withdraw his guilty plea to charges of defiant trespass and criminal attempt to commit indecent assault. Kowaleski was sentenced July 17 by Luzerne County Judge Micheal T. Vough to six-to-23 months at the county correctional facility.

The charges filed by Nanticoke police alleged Kowaleski followed two women separate times into a restroom inside Weis Market at Weis Plaza on Dec. 29, 2024, and propositioned a female employee at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Nanticoke to join him in a restroom for sexual relations, according to court records.

In the motion requesting to withdraw his guilty plea, Kowaleski claims his earlier admittance of guilt was not voluntarily made. Kowaleski claimed in his motion he was “asking” the women for their consent to provide sexual favors as it says in the criminal complaint.

When Kowaleski was sentenced, he was ordered to register his address for 15 years under the state’s Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act.

After the sentencing hearing, Assistant District Attorney Rachel Spivack on Aug. 25 filed a motion to vacate Kowaleski’s sentence and have him resentenced to include being deemed a sexually violent predator based on an evaluation from the state’s Sexual Offender Assessment Board.

The report from the Sexual Offender Assessment Board was not available when Kowaleski was sentenced July 17.

“…it is this board member’s professional opinion within a reasonable degree of professional certainty that Mr. Kowaleski does meet the criteria to be classified as a Sexually Violent Predator under Pennsylvania Law,” according to the SOAB report.

While the report says Kowaleski meets the criteria as a violent sexual predator, the decision is made by a Court of Common Pleas judge.

Vough scheduled…

Connecticut Sun drop battle with Atlanta Dream 93-76 despite 22 points from Tina Charles

UNCASVILLE — The Connecticut Sun looked the equals of the third-place Atlanta Dream for three and a half quarters, but the team couldn’t carry the momentum through the final buzzer in a 93-76 loss on Monday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

It was the Sun’s second straight loss after falling to the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday, and they will face the Dream twice more in the last four regular-season games of 2025.

“I think we lost against Minnesota because they were a better team and they played a better game than us, but I think (Monday) that wasn’t the case,” Sun coach Rachid Meziane said. “Atlanta is a great team, but we showed very good things in the first half and then we forgot our toughness in the locker room. We didn’t come back in the second half with what was required to win this game.

“It was a winnable game. We stopped playing defense in the last quarter, and we gave up the game.”

On the day the Sun were giving away bobbleheads of veteran Tina Charles, the UConn legend delivered 22 points and eight rebounds while shooting 50% from the field. Rookie Leila Lacan had another standout performance with 17 points, four assists, two steals and a block, and Marina Mabrey added 12 points plus three assists.

It wasn’t enough to overcome a balanced effort from Atlanta’s trio of All-Stars. Rhyne Howard led the Dream with 23 points, three assists and two steals, while MVP candidate Allisha Gray added 17 points plus five rebounds. Former Connecticut star Brionna Jones posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Atlanta finished with five players scoring in double-digits, also getting 17 points from forward Naz Hillmon and 15 from guard Jordin Canada off the bench in her…

HS FIELD HOCKEY: Reeds set for showdown

For Jocelyn Reed, Thursday’s game against Nanticoke Area is an important game. It’s the Wyoming Valley conference opener for the Hanover Area field hockey team and they are playing their rival, Nanticoke Area.

It’s always an interesting game, regardless of the sport, when these two teams play one another. For as much as Jocelyn Reed wants to think of it as just another game, it’s not.

That’s because she will be experiencing one of those first-and-last scenarios. Yes, it’s the first game of the season. Here is where the last comes in. It will be the final time she will be coaching against one of her daughters. Kate Reed plays for Nanticoke Area, just like her older sister, Grace, now a senior at St. Francis did. And their mom coached against the both of them.

“My kids go to Nanticoke Area, I teach at Hanover Area,” Jocelyn said. “A lot of people take jobs to coach their children. It’s fun. We all have the understanding it’s the mother-daughter game. After the game if it does not go my way it does hurt because I want to win. They don’t rub it in if they beat me. I wouldn’t rub it in against them. There is no animosity. They know I’m coming for them.”

Easier said than done? Not for coach Reed. She wants to win. Just like Hanover Area wants to win. Just like Nanticoke Area and Kate Reed wants to win. It’s a game. It counts in the standings. Kate Reed will try her best to put her team in the best position to score. Jocelyn Reed will do what’s best for her team. Just like any other game with the exception that Kate Reed might be the one to get a ride home from the game from the…
