WEST CHESTER–We all know at least one word from the Lenape language – “Hea,” which translates simply to Hey.
That was just one wonderful nugget of knowledge culled from a presentation made by five Elders of the Lenape, or Delaware Tribe of Indians, at West Chester University’s Philips Autograph Library, while they recently visited their “Homeland” here.
This program was part of the Chester County History Center’s America250 programming and was funded by the Chester County History Center’s Humphry Marshall Fund.

The Lenape had been forced out of the area hundreds of years ago and many ended up in Oklahoma.
“We didn’t leave anything behind, we brought our people,” said Jana Jolynn Roth. “That’s how important our culture is to us.
“Our family died to keep our culture.”

Annette Ketchum said that 39 current Native American tribes ended up in Oklahoma where “no man or beast could survive, but we survived.”
“We have carried our traditions with us,” Angelia Franke said.
About 125 Indian gaming casinos have paid for health care, housing and education. While gambling comes with its negatives, Ketchum was quick to say, “We won.”

EDWARDS, Dorothy Erika (nee Lipinski)
It is with reverent sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy in her home surrounded by the love of her family on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the age of 65.
Loving wife of Patrick to which she described him as “my last of the Mohican. I know he’d do anything for me.” He did just that; unwavering fealty during her battle with cancer. Decades of love, partnership and adventure before that made for two strong warriors. Dorothy’s greatest pride were her children: the late Christopher, Jennifer, Adrienne, Teigan and bonus daughter the late Tina. Cherished grandmother of the late Kaylanna, George, Solomon and Aaliyah.
Dorothy was born in Calgary, Alberta on December 21, 1959 and is the beloved daughter of Erika and the late George Lipinski. Devoted sister of Susan (Clive), Raymond (Cindy) and Larry (Pam). Sister-in-law of Katherine (Will). Dorothy was so grateful for her many nieces and nephews, and she shared special bonds with each.
Those that knew Dorothy will remember her as an ethereal spirit; disarming, kind and endlessly nurturing. Multi-faceted in her talents may it be as a gardener, artistry with wood burning, strong steward of her land and of course her indelible cunning and Intuitiveness. Dorothy will always be remembered for her warmth, sharp sense of humour, her love of nature and being ‘at camp.’ Her incomparable work ethic and her fierce love of family.
We would like to extend our profound thank you to Dorothy’s palliative care team. To Dr. Booth for her compassion and Sierra for truly being a godsend.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness done in Dorothy’s memory, the way she lived every day of her life. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception…

USNS Lenni Lenape is the sixth Bollinger-Built T-ATS
Houma, La. — Joined by senior U.S. Navy officials and more than 20 officials from the Lenape Nation at Bollinger Houma, Bollinger Shipyards (Bollinger) today officially laid the keel for the future USNS Lenni Lenape, the ninth Navajo-class Towing, Salvage, and Rescue Ship (T-ATS) and the sixth T-ATS vessel being constructed by Bollinger since acquiring the program in April of 2021.
“Bollinger is grateful for the Navy’s continued confidence in our team to build the Navajo-class Towing, Salvage and Rescue Ships,” said Ben Bordelon, President and CEO of Bollinger Shipyards. “The keel laying of the future USNS Lenni Lenape marks another significant milestone in our partnership, and we are honored to support the Navy’s fleet modernization efforts through the T-ATS program.”
The keel authenticators were the Hon. Susan Cade, Elder of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Hon. Deborah Dotson, Committee Member of the Delaware Nation, and the Hon. Shannon Holsey, President of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
Named to honor the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, the future USNS Lenni Lenape (T-ATS 9) will be the first naval vessel to carry the name of the Lenni Lenape tribe, which was the first tribe to sign a treaty with the United States in 1778.
The Navajo class provides ocean-going tug, salvage, and rescue capabilities to support fleet operations. T-ATS replaces and fulfills the capabilities that were previously provided by the Powhatan-class Fleet Ocean Tug (T-ATF 166) and Safeguard-class Rescue and Salvage Ships (T-ARS 50) class ships.
In addition to T-ATS 9, Bollinger is constructing USNS Navajo (T-ATS 6), USNS Cherokee Nation (T-ATS 7), USNS Saginaw Ojibwe Anishinabek (T-ATS 8), and USNS Muscogee Creek Nation (T-ATS 10).

Luzerne County and PennDOT are reviewing the technical scope and price for the first phase of the Nanticoke/West Nantkcoke bridge project.
“Once the technical scope and price are finalized, Modjeski & Masters can start gathering data for options for repair/replacement,” County Manager Romilda Crocamo said Tuesday in a project update.
In August, PennDOT approved Modjeski and Masters Inc., county council’s selection, as the firm responsible for design engineering work on the closed Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge. The Cumberland County firm designed the Carey Avenue replacement bridge that opened in 2002 over the Susquehanna River and links Hanover Twp. and Plymouth.
“Anticipated notice to proceed for the design team should occur in the November timeframe at which time the first phasing of scoping can begin,” Crocamo said.
The county owns the closed Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge over the Susquehanna River and has been going through PennDOT’s process to select a design firm to determine how to repair, reconstruct or replace the bridge. That will allow the county to receive $10 million in federal project funding through the state Transportation Improvement Program.
On March 20, Crocamo closed the bridge over the Susquehanna River shortly after engineers conducting a scheduled routine bridge inspection determined advanced deterioration and section loss of primary, load-carrying components were critical deficiencies.
The bridge, built in 1914, links Nanticoke City to the West Nanticoke section of Plymouth Twp. The distance between the West Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge and the next-closest bridge over the river, the Route 29 bridge connecting Hanover Twp. and Plymouth Twp., is more than one mile.
The county administration “will provide monthly updates on the project’s progress,” and officials “will continue to meet regularly with stakeholders to address any questions or feedback,” Crocamo said Tuesday.
County council members heard presentations from the top three highest ranked engineering firms interested…

Anderson’s name carries a history much deeper than most realize. Long before streets and factories, before schools and churches, this land was home to the Miami people.
In the early 1800s the Lenape, also known as the Delaware Indians, settled here through agreement with the Miami. Chief Kikthawenund, remembered to us as Chief Anderson, established a Lenape village on the White River. That settlement, called Wapeminskink or the “Place of the Chestnut Trees,” became an important stop in the Lenape journey west.
