Opening Remarks DSRSG Ghulam Isaczai, Commemorating the 24th Anniversary of UNSCR 1325: Advancing Women, Peace, and Security [EN/AR]

Attachments

I am truly honored to be here with you today to commemorate the 24th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. Adopted in 2000, this landmark resolution was the first to acknowledge the disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls, as well as their vital role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and recovery.

Over the past 24 years since its adoption, we have made undeniable strides in advancing women’s rights, inclusion, and the amplification of women voices in peace and political processes. However, it is equally clear that much work still lies ahead. The ongoing events in Gaza and Lebanon starkly remind us that, as an international community, we still have significant work ahead.

This region, more than any other, has borne the brunt of conflict and violence, with women and girls disproportionately affected, enduring the greatest hardships of displacement, conflict, and loss. In Gaza and Lebanon, countless women and girls have lost their lives, while survivors endure repeated displacement under unbearable conditions. They face increased vulnerabilities, struggling not only to survive but also to protect and care for their children amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Despite these immense challenges, we have witnessed the rise of courageous women – women who, despite great personal risks, have taken on critical roles in humanitarian efforts within their communities.

Protecting women, especially during times of conflict, is intrinsically linked to their participation and inclusion in peace and political processes. These two pillars—protection and participation—are interdependent, and neither can succeed without the other. As the UN Secretary-General has underscored, “women’s participation must be the norm, not an afterthought”. Achieving this requires three key elements: strong political will, adequate financial resources, and decisive, sustained action.

Iraq has made significant strides in enhancing women’s roles in peacebuilding, governance, and…

Kansas Tribal Nations fight for cultural preservation at inaugural celebration

BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. — Wyandot Nation of Kansas held an inaugural Indigenous People’s Day celebration on Saturday, offering a chance to participate in traditional dance, indigenous craft making, and taste cuisine.

“We can be united and we can work together. You can learn our history. Even though you’re not in our tribe you can learn our history, you can be a part of us because we want to teach you our history,” explained Principal Chief Judith Manthe of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas.

Several tribal nations including Kansas Delaware, Kickapoo, and Oklahoma Wyandot attended to preserve their culture.

“We’ve been here fighting for everything that we have here. We want to tell our stories. That is what our goal is,” added Manthe.

Wyandot and Kansas Delaware Tribes originated from Ontario, Canada and present-day New England regions of North America. Numerous treaties and forced removals led the tribes to Kansas.

Between the two tribes, their populations ranged upwards of 70,000. Through the individual tribes’ Trail of Tears stories, populations dwindled below 1,000.

“When the government removed Indians to Indian territory, they required that they not practice their culture and their cultural connections be disconnected,” said Linda Graff, former Chief of the Kansas Delaware Tribe. “Everybody that has been here today is trying to recover their culture.”

Kansas’ indigenous tribes have reached the point of struggle to preserve their culture, starting with youth involvement.

Results of Chesapeake Bay 2024 Young-of-Year Striped Bass Survey Show Little Change

Results of Chesapeake Bay 2024 Young-of-Year Striped Bass Survey Show Little Change

October 17, 2024

Low spawning success documented for sixth consecutive year

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced results of this year’s juvenile striped bass survey, which tracks the reproductive success of Maryland’s state fish in the Chesapeake Bay. The 2024 young-of-year index is 2.0, well below the long-term average of 11.0, and marks the sixth consecutive year of poor reproduction.

“These results underscore the complexity of managing a coastal migratory species whose life-cycle is influenced by environmental conditions during a brief spawning period,” said Maryland DNR Fishing and Boating Services Director Lynn Fegley. “We will continue to explore ways to conserve and enhance the spawning population during this time when we are adding fewer young fish to the population.”

During this annual survey, fishery managers examine 22 sites located in four major striped bass spawning areas: the Choptank, Nanticoke, and Potomac rivers, and the upper Chesapeake Bay. Biologists visit each site three times per summer, collecting fish with two sweeps of a 100-foot beach seine net. The index represents the average number of young-of-year striped bass found in each sample. The juvenile striped bass  average less than 3 inches long and are not usually encountered by anglers. Similar fish surveys conducted this summer in the Patapsco, Magothy, Rhode, West, Miles, and Tred Avon rivers found fewer striped bass, also known as rockfish.

Fever Fans Loving Aliyah Boston’s Offseason Improvement Campaign

Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston made some visible improvements between her WNBA Rookie of the Year-winning 2023 season and her 2024 sophomore campaign.

While Boston’s points per game suffered a bit of a decrease (14 points per game in 2024 compared to 14.5 in 2023), that was largely owed to Boston starting slow out of the gate, plus her playing alongside Caitlin Clark, who commanded more shots of her own.

Another interesting shift was how Boston took way more three-pointers in 2024 than during her rookie season.

While the South Carolina product made 40% of her threes as a rookie (4 out of 10), she nearly tripled that volume in 2024 by taking 26 total threes (7 of which were made) during the regular season. Boston also showed confidence by putting up three-pointers in clutch moments.

However, Boston doesn’t appear content with merely increasing her three-point shooting output. An X video that was posted by WNBA Central on Friday showed Boston honing her three-point stroke — and looked to be hitting mostly nothing but net.

“Aliyah Boston has been working hard on her 3pt shot since the season ended

“The added skillset could do wonders for Indiana Fever’s playoff run in 2025 #WNBA #FeverRising,” the post wrote.

Fever fans are loving this sharpshooting display from one of their franchise’s core pieces.

“Love to see it. Especially because Fever need to get into more catch-and-shoot motions. They were rarely seen this season,” one X user wrote.
