Curtain closes on season at Pocono – U.S. Trotting News

Wilkes-Barre, PA — The final card of the 2024 harness racing season at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania was held Saturday (November 23) afternoon, with an off track, temperatures barely above 40, and snow in the infield.

Closing day features were a trio of $17,000 contests, all of them contested after the track was upgraded from “sloppy +1” to “good +1.”

The pacing division, restricted to males, saw the American Ideal three-year-old pacing gelding Seen Here (Tyler Buter) run his record to two wins and a second since entering the Jeff Cullipher stable with a 1:52.2 score. Buter, who along with Matt Kakaley had four victories on Closing Day, brushed the favored sophomore to command in front of the stands and kept piling on the speed, finishing 1-1/2 lengths to the good of second choice Solid Character for Pollack Racing LLC.

The faster of the trotting headliners went to the International gelding Dark Mind (Anthony Napolitano), winning for the third straight time for trainer Noel Daley and owner Sonja Katrina Booth, here in 1:55.3. Dark Mind was third-over in a good cover flow for driver Anthony Napolitano, went wide and was along late to beat out pacesetter Green Pastures (Buter) by 1-1/4 lengths, with Sapphinerainstar shaking free to get beaten in the photo for the deuce and ending a five-race win string.

In the other diamond gaited split, another altered son of International Moni, Dejerate Hanover (Buter), followed solid cover, tipped wide, got the lead, and then held off the horse on his back, Kovu AS, by a half length in 1:56.1. Buter drove the winner, a ten-time…

United Nations Iraq congratulates population census success, reaffirms commitment to supporting Iraq’s development plans [EN/AR/KU]

Baghdad, 25 November 2024 – The United Nations in Iraq congratulated the Government and people of Iraq on the completion of a successful population census with the announcement of its preliminary results, underscoring the significance of the outcome to future national economic and social development policies and strategies aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals for the benefit of all Iraqis.

“To have a census after 37 years throughout Iraq was not an easy feat, and to uphold international standards and leverage modern technology throughout the process was a significant achievement,” said Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

This success would not have been possible if it was not for the huge efforts made by His Excellency Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, Dr. Mohammed Tamim, and the government teams, in close collaboration with UNFPA Iraq.

Dr. Tamim: “The census is the compass for developmental planning in Iraq, providing an accurate depiction of the demographic reality and the diverse needs of the people. The announcement of preliminary census results represents a crucial step toward building a strong and cohesive Iraq, enabling decision-makers to make well-informed decisions based on reliable facts and figures.”

The United Nations is pleased to have supported the process through critical technical assistance and advice of UN Population Fund (UNFPA). UNFPA stands ready to continue to support the Government of Iraq in interpreting, analysing and utilizing the data to inform national policies and development strategies.

The United Nations in Iraq reaffirms its support to Iraq’s development agenda to advance the country towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Melvin G romps to sixth straight win in DSBF prelim – U.S. Trotting News

Dover, DE — Legacy Racing of Delaware and Nanticoke Racing’s Melvin G rolled to his sixth consecutive victory on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at Bally’s Dover, leaving his five rivals well behind en route to a 1:57.2 score in the faster of two $20,000 second-round divisions of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders’ Fund series for 2-year-old male trotters.

With two horses breaking stride before the start, Melvin G and driver Jim Morand only had three rivals to contend with at race’s outset, and they pushed through at the pegs to seat Perfect Suprise (Pat Berry) in the pocket through a :29 first quarter. After rating a :58.4 half, Melvin G began to pull away from the others, extending his margin to 2-1/2 lengths at three-quarters in 1:28 before passing the winning post five lengths clear of the late-gaining Legend Of Rock (Corey Callahan) while geared down. Perfect Suprise faded to third.

Les Givens trains Melvin G, an E L Platinum-Jersey Punk gelding whose sixth win from nine starts pushed him over $100,000 in lifetime earnings. He paid $2.10 to win as the 1-20 favorite.

The first division saw second-time starter Yale and trainer-driver Art Stafford Jr. narrowly hold off Chex Check for a 1:58.4 win.

After finishing third to Melvin G on debut last week, Yale sustained a two-wide push through the first turn to work clear of Wolfpack Cheddar (Callahan) past a :28.4 first quarter before yielding for the pocket with a circuit to go. The E L Platinum-Press Corp colt pulled the pocket past three-quarters in 1:29, reeled in Wolfpack Cheddar, and evaded a late push from Chex Check (Tony Morgan) up the…

Mayor joins with residents to unveil beautiful new welcome signage being installed across 65 Detroit neighborhoods

  • Neighborhoods will receive up to three signs that reflect each neighborhood’s unique identity 
  • City also providing one additional sign to highlight a specific community asset 
  • $500,000 project funded by city’s share of American Rescue Plan Act funds 

 

Mayor Mike Duggan, along with residents and members of his Department of Neighborhoods and General Services Department today unveiled the first beautiful new gateway signage that is being installed to welcome residents and visitors to 65 neighborhoods across the city. 

The City Council approved a $512,500 contract with Space Lab Development earlier this year to fabricate and install the signs, that will indicate the entrance to neighborhoods and the presence of established associations.  

“Every one of Detroit’s neighborhoods has its own name and its own identity and we wanted to celebrate the pride residents have in their community,” said Mayor Duggan. “Thanks to the American Rescue Plan Act, the City was able to help each neighborhood celebrate that pride.”  

Each neighborhood will be able to receive up to three signs that welcome residents to the neighborhood. The wooden signs are more than 6 feet tall and about 4 feet wide, each highlighting ​an amenity ​of the neighborhood’s choice that reflects their area.  

In addition to these signs, the city will partner with Brightmoor Makerspace Association to craft handmade wooden specialty signs. Brightmoor Makerspace is a center designed for youth and adults to foster their creative skills, craftmanship, and business ideas. Youth that are a part of Brightmoor Makerspace will collaborate to design the signs and they will be placed in areas such as community gardens or dedications of land.

Minutemen Fall 80-87 to Temple in Game 1 At Mohegan Sun

AMHERST, MASS. — Massachusetts (1-4) dropped a competitive 87-80 game to Temple (4-2) on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun.  
 
The Minutemen orchestrated a 15-2 scoring run late in the first half to bring the game within one possession but could not close the gap in the second half. Massachusetts held a strong presence down low, scoring 30 points in the paint while swatting four shots. 
 
Sophomore Jaylen Curry led the Minutemen with 17 points to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists. Curry has now scored in double figures in four consecutive games. 
 
Shahid Muhammad scored a season-high 12 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. The performance marks the first double-digit scoring total for Muhammad. 
 
Daniel Hankins-Sanford recorded his second double-double of the year, scoring 15 points while snagging a team-high 10 rebounds.  
 
The Owls were led by Jamal Mashburn Jr., who scored a game-high 26 points on the night.  
 
Breaking Down The Action 

  • A free throw from Daniel Rivera got the scoring going, giving Massachusetts a 1-0 lead 19 seconds after the opening tip. 
  • An and-one layup from Temple’s Quante Berry made it 7-2 Owls with just under 18 minutes to go in the first half. 
  • A fast break three-pointer from Jaylen Curry punctuated a 7-0 swing for the Minutemen, providing a 9-7 lead with 16:18 left in the half. 
  • A three-point basket from Jameel Brown made it 18-11 Temple, with 12:27 on the clock. 
  • A pair of free throws from Berry gave Temple their largest lead of the game at 32-17 with 7:07 remaining.

Obituary of Tabitha Lee Ireland
Peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Tabitha Lee Ireland “Yohliwaka:yu”, of Munsee-Delaware Nation / Oneida Nation Bear Clan, in her 42nd year, began her journey to the spirit world.
Yohliwaka:yu loved her son, Dyson Lee Kechego dearly, who was her everything, the light of her life, who kept her going.
The cherished daughter of Lee Snake and the late Michele Louise Marie Snake (nee Ireland – 2013), Yohliwaka:yu loved living life, as the adventurous, free-spirited, daughter she was.
As the oldest sister to Rebecca Lee “Kuwawi” Ireland, and Francesca Lea “Kah^tiyos:tha” Snake (“Tiyo”) Yohliwaka:yu loved spending as much time as possible with family. She loved having meals together and Chinese food was her favourite.
Yohliwaka:yu will be greatly missed as special Aunty to “Cash” (Cassius), and adopted nieces and nephews,
Lilly, Emma, Hunter, Jacob, Houston, Lucas, and Winter, as well as Gregory, Travis, Sara, and Kyle Schoelier, and loved as “Mama Tabi” to Lauryn.
She was a dog lover and adored her protector, “Bowser”, and her fury nieces and nephew.
Yohliwaka:yu is survived by many Aunts, Uncles. cousins and friends.
Dear grand-daughter of Donna Schuyler, Yohliwaka:yu will be lovingly greeted by her Grandmother, Ina Henry, as she “goes home” to the spirit world.
Friday, November 22, 2024, after 3:00pm, family and friends will be received at the Oneida Longhouse on River Road, where the evening wake will also be held, and the funeral Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 11:00am. Afterwards, the Interment will be held at 400 Thomigo Road, Muncey, and a meal to follow at the Munsee-Delaware Nation Community Centre.
