Desis of Doylestown welcomed more than 200 people for its Garba Fundraiser event held on September 20 at Unami Middle School in Chalfont, writes Emily Neil for WHYY.

The Bucks County nonprofit, which counts among its members people of Bangladeshi, Indian, Nepali, Pakistani, and Sri Lankan descent, organized the fundraiser to raise money for its fourth annual free Diwali celebration. The upcoming event will be held at Pearl S. Buck House on October 27.

Garba is an Indian circle community dance that celebrates the divine feminine supreme Durga — a Hindu goddess — and marks the passage of time. On Friday, participants dressed up in their best sarees and ghagras and danced in concentric circles as they provided a glimpse into what the nine-day festival looks like in India.

Desis of Doylestown’s youth group planned the event with the aim of educating and sharing more from both within and beyond the local South Asian community to make sure that the children do not feel like they are outsiders.

“Desis are Pennsylvanians, part of this community,” said Desis of Doylestown co-founder Sheela Rai. “We are integral to the community.”

The last of the Mohican-hairstyle-wearing people still lining up for iPhones

We stumble upon Butch, possibly the last remaining iPhone liner-upper in the wild, and see what makes him tick.

The year was 2010. A young cub reporter named Mr. Sato, still fresh off the farmland of Shimane Prefecture, emerged from the east exit of the labyrinthine Shinjuku Station and met his new colleague for the first time. It was a young urbanite with long hair named Go Hatori, who about a decade later would become Mr. Sato’s editor.

The two dined at a nearby McDonald’s before Mr. Sato went off on one of his first assignments to wait in line for an iPhone 4 at the Softbank Store in Omotesando.

After spending three nights on the sidewalk and enduring heavy rain, he ended up unable to purchase a phone because to do so he would have to switch providers from Docomo to Softbank and he couldn’t do that because he didn’t pay his Docomo bill.

Still, over that half a week, he learned that lining up for an iPhone was more than just being one of the first to own a piece of electronics. It was about challenging yourself and the sense of camaraderie that comes with being around those doing the same. In fact, this was when Mr. Sato and our website formed a long-lasting friendship with Butch a.k.a. Big Wave.

Football Recap: Cedar Grove Piles Up the Points Against Madison

Cedar Grove put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They breezed by the Madison Dodgers on the road to the tune of 35-7. Fans of the Panthers have seen this all before: every one of the games they’ve played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

A big part of Cedar Grove’s win came down to the chemistry between Stephen Paradiso and his top target Jackson Morrice. Paradiso threw for 342 yards and four touchdowns while completing 73.1% of his passes while Morrice gained 180 total yards and three touchdowns. Morrice was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 57 yards.

Cedar Grove pushed their record up to 4-0 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Madison, they are on a four-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Cedar Grove will challenge Newark Collegiate Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Cedar Grove is facing Newark Collegiate Academy at the right time seeing as Newark Collegiate Academy is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Madison, they are taking a road trip to face off against Lenape Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Al-Sudani to Present Iraq’s Development Strategy at the United Nations General Assembly: PM advisor

Hussein Al-Alawi, advisor to the Prime Minister, stated on Sunday that Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ Al-Sudani will lead Iraq’s delegation at the United Nations General Assembly, where he will discuss key sustainable development indicators and advocate for productive diplomacy for international cooperation and concluding the UNAMI mission.

Al-Alawi confirmed that the Prime Minister will formally present Iraq’s comprehensive development strategy during the Assembly sessions.
In remarks to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Alawi articulated, “Iraq is embracing a proactive diplomatic approach designed to foster sustained international cooperation within the global framework, while simultaneously facilitating the transition for ending the mission of UNAMI. This effort is complemented by ongoing collaboration with various United Nations agencies.”

He underscored Iraq’s commitment to leveraging the opportunity presented by the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in 2024 as a global platform for dialogue. This session will enable the Iraqi government to communicate its policies and development strategies effectively, allowing for discussions on progress across multiple sectors, including labor, social issues, and governance.
Al-Alawi highlighted the government’s focus on developmental renaissance through the announcement of a five-year plan, alongside initiatives to adapt to climate change and combat the effects of global warming.
He also noted the launch of the “Zero Flame” initiative aimed at eliminating gas flaring, which the government has actively pursued for the past 23 months, emphasizing that these initiatives have invigorated the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors, setting Iraq on a transformative path toward a new era. Furthermore, he mentioned that the government is targeting an increase in the utilization of flared gas from 69% to 75%, with aspirations to position Iraq among the world’s top five gas producers. Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s ‘The Lost Christmas Eve’ Winter Tour 2024 to be a triple celebration

Art Gallery Exhibition Focuses on Innovative Indigenous Works

Galloway, N.J. – “Indigenous people are more than just what you read about in your false and colonial history books or a concept of the past. In 2024, we are contemporary.”

This and more gems of wisdom were dropped by Indigenous artist Denise “Bright Dove” Ashton-Dunkley during Sept. 17’s Artist Talk & Workshop in the Stockton University Art Gallery.

Ashton-Dunkley of the Nanticoke/Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation is one of more than 25 local and international artists featured in the new two-floor exhibition, “Indigenous Approaches, Sustainable Futures.” She and fellow tribe member Tyrese “Bright Flower” Gould Jacinto and Jeremy Dennis of the Shinnecock Indian Nation led participants on a tour of the exhibition and talked about the inspiration behind their featured works. 

According to Ashton-Dunkley, her piece, “Land Back,” is meant to challenge the viewer to acknowledge and consider the concepts of land reclamation and the significance of Indigenous traditional and ecological knowledge, especially as the world reckons with the current climate crisis.

“We hold this knowledge, and we’ve always been willing to share it. There’s no need to try to continue erasing us via MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women), genocide or forced sterilization,” Ashton-Dunkley said. “It all comes down to you voting, finding out what these politicians stand for and holding them accountable to their promises. Help us with your voice and steward these lands.”

Gould Jacinto’s gourd art is visually striking; lights reflect off of the colorful beads that adorn the painted gourds, creating rainbow shadows on the gallery’s walls and floors. Gould Jacinto explained that each piece comes from the same source of inspiration — nature and how it connects the past with the present.

Football Game Preview: Tunkhannock on Home-Turf

Tunkhannock hasn’t had much luck against Wyoming Area recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Tunkhannock Tigers will stay at home for another week and welcome the Wyoming Area Warriors at 7:00 p.m.

Tunkhannock will head into Friday’s contest ready to turn things around: they couldn’t quite beat Greater Nanticoke Area on Friday, but the two-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the 40-point loss they were dealt last Friday. Tunkhannock fell just short of Greater Nanticoke Area by a score of 14-12.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wyoming Area). They took their game at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 56-6 win over Lakeland. Given the Warriors’ advantage in MaxPreps’ Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 142nd, while the Chiefs are ranked 395th), the result wasn’t entirely unexpected.

It was another big night for Lidge Kellum, who rushed for 183 yards on only 11 carries. His longest rush was for an impressive 69 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. The team also got some help courtesy of Trustin Johnson, who rushed for 68 yards on only five carries.

He was just one part of a punishing run game: Wyoming Area was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 409 rushing yards. That’s the most rushing yards they’ve posted since back in October of 2023.

Wyoming Area wouldn’t let Lakeland keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Wyoming Area can thank Johnson and Donavon Miller for forcing both of them. The dominant performance…
