To celebrate National Day of the Cowboy, the Mohican Tipi Company is hosting a Texas-themed event with fun for the whole family on Saturday (July 22) and Sunday (July 23).

There will be line dancing, a falconry show, live music throughout the day, a pony patch, funfair rides, an animal show, and – to top it off – a chilli-eating competition on both days.

There will also be a parade where judges will pick the best cowboy and cowgirl, with the winners set to receive a special prize.

A spokesperson for The Mohican Tippi Company, said: “Get up close and personal as fearless cowboys and cowgirls take on the mighty bucking bronco.

“Feel the excitement in the air as teams battle it out in thrilling tug-of -war competitions. Who will win the prestigious title of best dressed cowboy and cowgirl in our parade? It’s anyone’s guess!

“Not to mention the wide selection of craft stalls and a variety of interesting activities happening throughout the day for all ages groups.

“So kick up your heels and join the fun and do some line dancing in our cozy Mohican Tipis. Let the live music transport you into another world…

The namesake for north Winnipeg’s newest elementary school is an Anishinaabemowin phrase that celebrates what it means to be human and live in harmony in an interconnected world.

École Mino Pimatisiwin School is slated to open in Aurora at North Point, an up-and-coming suburb near the intersection of McPhillips Street and Murray Avenue, in September 2025.

Trustees voted unanimously in support of the Indigenous title — the first of its kind in the Seven Oaks School Division, and one of only a handful of public schools in the province named in a language other than English — at a spring meeting.

Would creating a lakeside city inside an industrial park be Haldimand County’s folly — or its salvation?

Empire Communities sparked a passionate debate about the future of the rural county when the developers approached Haldimand council last year with a plan to build some 15,000 homes and light industry on 4,200 acres of industrial land surrounding Stelco’s Nanticoke steelworks.

The expanded town of Nanticoke would sit just west of an oil refinery and the site of a since-demolished coal-fired power plant.

Empire’s proposal to house 40,000 new residents in a “provincially significant employment zone” — areas designated by the province for industrial development and declared unsuitable for housing — would almost double the county’s population and turn the village of Nanticoke into the largest community in Haldimand.

In advertising for the project, dubbed Your Nanticoke, Empire promises a “bright future” that includes 110 acres of publicly accessible waterfront, recreational facilities such as an indoor pool, a park and trail network, 2,000 affordable housing units “for young families” and a new sewage treatment plant.

All of this without a tax increase, the company says, and with the creation of more than 10,000 jobs.

Proponents of Empire’s plan say Haldimand cannot afford to reject the opportunity to add much-needed water treatment infrastructure on the developer’s dime while finding a new use for industrial lands that have sat empty for decades.

“My feeling is the positives far outweigh any negatives that could be,” Haldimand councillor Stewart Patterson, whose ward includes Nanticoke, told The Spectator.

“There are going to be some bumps in the road, but the big thing is the added infrastructure that there’s no way we could afford as a county on our own.”

But critics — including the local MPP and mayor — say allowing thousands of people to live near giant industrial polluters makes no sense and is only…

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Bettors Donttell (Bettor’s Delight), who looked to be the worst-placed of the four main contenders in Saturday afternoon’s $18,500 pacing feature at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, showed great gameness to go on to a 1:49.4 victory.

Traceur Hanover yielded to RIP Wheeler before an opening quarter of :26.1; that one then reached the half in :54.3. Bettors Donttell started up first-over headed down the backstretch, with favored Backstreet Shadow in good second-over position. Those positions didn’t change by the 1:21.3 three-quarters, and they didn’t change as the field turned for home.

RIP Wheeler couldn’t maintain his advantage, and Backstreet Shadow, involved in an incident in the Battle Of Lake Erie and not in peak form since, couldn’t take advantage of the cover trip after swinging wide. 20-1 Traceur Hanover raced well in the pocket, but Bettors Donttell, who was not the smoothest-gaited of the foursome, showed the most heart to take the top event by a half length over Traceur Hanover.

Simon Allard guided the winner to victory for the meet’s leading trainer, Ron Burke, and the Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC partnership.

There was an $18,000 trot for the highest level of developing younger horse before they go on to fast-class racing (“nw 11 races life”), with Speed Away (Father Patrick), who had won against older horses in his last start, making it two straight with a 1:53.4 triumph. Houston-headquartered Forum Energy Technologies (FET) has delivered an electric observation-class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to Canadian Memorial University of Newfoundland which can be used for renewable energy projects, among other things.

Delivered to the Fisheries and Marine Institute, the primary function of the Sub-Atlantic Mohican ROV system will be to support ocean research, while it will also be used for pilot technician training. For ocean research operations, the ROV will be required to carry a payload skid for navigation, equipment and sensors, as well as be capable of manipulation and intervention.

Mohican is equipped for inspection tasks, non-destructive testing, (NDT), light intervention, pipeline/cable/seabed survey, diver assist/safety, harbor and port security, scientific survey and data collection, renewable energy projects, civil engineering, long tunnel excursion and for inland waterways.

It was manufactured at FET’s UK facility at Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, and delivered to Memorial University of Newfoundland this year.

According to the company, the Mohican ROV has a 2,000-meter depth rating and with TMS Garage system, is suited to inspection, survey repair, oceanographic research and subsea maintenance tasks. Ancillary tools and sensors can also be added to the vehicle for survey and light intervention work.

“The acquisition of the FET Mohican ROV system vastly increases our capability to complete scientific observation and sampling research work up to depths of 2000 m,” said Joe Singleton, Interim Head for the School of Ocean Technology at the Marine Institute of Memorial University.

“The ability to add additional sensors, cameras, and equipment to the payload makes it versatile for all anticipated expeditions. For our students completing the ROV Technician program, this comprehensive system provides a great experiential learning platform for maintenance, repair, integration, and operations.”
