Jun. 26—MOHEGAN — Natisha Hiedeman is from Green Bay, Wisconsin, “little old Green Bay,” she called it earlier this week.

“I feel the same way about Connecticut,” Hiedeman said. “I just think this has always been my home coming right out of college. This was my first training camp. This is where I started out. This is where the vets showed me the way.

“The fans, the community, just the support staff, all the way from top to bottom, I would just say that this just feels like home. I’m a very homebody type of person.”

That led Hiedeman, who spent her first season in 2022 as the Connecticut Sun’s starting point guard — a journey which led the Sun all the way to the WNBA Finals — to re-sign with Connecticut as a restricted free agent. Hiedeman signed a two-year deal in February.

Her most recent contributions have been multi-faceted for the Sun (12-3), who face the New York Liberty (9-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Liberty beat the Sun earlier this season in New York, 81-65.

Hiedeman is averaging 8.3 points and 3.5 assists, finishing with 14 points and five assists in Connecticut’s 96-72 home victory Sunday over the Chicago Sky.

Hiedeman, who has at least one 3-pointer in each of the Sun’s last four games, is eighth in franchise history with 176 and 14th in assists at 310.

There is also a matter of her defense, with Hiedeman locking down Dallas leading scorer Arike Ogunbowale in a matchup on June 4, holding Ogunbowale to a season-low eight points. Hiedeman, who didn’t score in the game, “exhausted herself defensively,” according to first-year head coach Stephanie White.

Listed at 5-foot-8, 135 pounds, Hiedeman is a 2019 graduate of Marquette who was drafted in the second round by Minnesota and sent to the Sun…

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — The state has given additional support to help the township with its renovation project for the Lake Lenape Dam.

The Local Finance Board voted in May to waive a requirement that the township make a 5% down payment on its half of the funds to be borrowed, something that would have cost the township about $250,000.

Township Chief Financial Officer Cynthia Lindsay delivered a presentation about the dam to the board before its vote, according to a transcript of the meeting. She said it was important that the state waive the down payment requirements due to the urgent work needed on the dam and the somewhat dire straits faced by the township financially.

Lindsay said the dam was built circa 1840 and was classified by the state Department of Environmental Protection as a “high hazard dam.” Current conditions at the structure, Lindsay added, “fail to meet modern global stability requirements that are applicable to a high hazard class one dam.”

The “high-hazard” designation is a product of an evaluation from the state Office of Dam Safety, which has determined that if a dam breach were to occur there was a risk of widespread property damage along the Great Egg Harbor River. Damage could extend to several neighoring municipalities, including Egg Harbor Township, Estell Manor and Weymouth Township. The office has also concluded that there was “the potential for loss of life.” Township officials have stressed that the dam is within an acceptable safety factor, but the need for the improvements was urgent.

Lindsay also addressed the finances of the township at the state meeting. She said Hamilton was facing a tax rate increase of nearly 6 cents per $100 of assessed property value this year — a hike that would cost the average homeowner, who…

Williamstown—The Chapin Library of Rare Books at Williams College will host its annual July 4th reading of historical documents by actors from the Williamstown Theatre Festival at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4, 2023. Readers at this year’s event include President of the Stockbridge Munsee Community Shannon Holsey, offering excerpts from a speech by nineteenth-century Mohican leader John Quinney.

The event is free and open to the public.

Visitors are invited to gather on the college’s Library Quad to hear the readings delivered from Sawyer Library’s second floor outdoor balcony. The program includes:

SALISBURY, MD—Dr. Noah Bressman, Salisbury University assistant professor of biological studies, is combating invasive species in local waterways, and Eastern Shore anglers can help.

Fishing hobbyists and professionals alike are invited to the second Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby, presented by SU Sunday, July 23 (rain date: Saturday, July 29) at Cherry Beach Park in Sharptown, MD. Lines in at 5 a.m. and weigh-in begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by awards, data collection, invasive species educational lessons and a free catfish cookout with Shore Gourmet.

Thanks to support from the Salisbury University Foundation, Inc. and SU’s Graduate Studies and Research Office, the free derby features some $2,000 in prizes. A portion of all blue catfish and northern snakeheads caught will be provided to Bressman’s lab to continue research to learn more about their effects on the local ecosystem, with a focus on diet, growth speed and reproduction rates. Anglers may take home the remainder of their catches if desired.

“We really want to spread awareness in local waterway communities about what fish are invasive, and how they can minimize the population to relieve some pressure from striped bass and blue crabs, whose populations are on the decline,” said Bressman. “The event is family friendly for anglers of any age.”

Derby fishing is permitted at Cherry Beach Park for shore-based anglers. Those fishing from kayaks or boats may use any boat launch along the Nanticoke and tributaries such as Marshyhope Creek and Barren Creek. Maryland or Delaware tidal fishing licenses are required for most participants, respective to their fishing location. A section of Cherry Beach Park is designated as a license-free fishing zone for those without a license.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 24 points and Jonquel Jones added 14 points and 11 rebounds in her return to Connecticut as the New York Liberty beat the Sun 89-81 on Tuesday night.

The victory moved the Liberty into a tie with Connecticut atop the Commissioner Cup standings in the Eastern Conference. Each team has one game left although New York has the tiebreaker having swept the two games against the Sun.

Las Vegas has nearly wrapped up the Western Conference slot, sitting at 6-0.

Kelsey Plum scored 25 points and A’ja Wilson added 23 points and 12 rebounds to help the Las Vegas Aces rout the Connecticut Sun 102-84 in a matchup of the top teams in the WNBA.
