AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUPGreater Pittston Senior team takes over league lead

The Greater Pittston Senior American Legion Baseball team made the most of a busy week, winning Wyoming Valley League games each day from Monday through Thursday.

Greater Pittston used the four wins to take over the league lead at 8-2 heading into the final week of the regular season.

The team returns to action Monday with a doubleheader against Back Mountain, completing a suspended game in which it leads 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, then moving on to play a full game.

Greater Pittston will host the league playoffs beginning Saturday.

Greater Pittston 8, Wilkes-Barre/Plains 1

Nick Cerasaro shut down Wilkes-Barre/Plains, with relief help from Sean Petrosky and Anthony Cencetti, Thursday to lead the team’s fourth win in as many days.

Cerasaro worked five innings. He did not allow a base runner over his final three innings.

Petrosky and Cencetti each worked a scoreless inning.

Jeremy Cawley, Troy Davis, Cencetti, Cerasaro and Matt Stepanski all had at least two hits.

Greater Pittston 6, Nanticoke 4

Troy Davis threw out a runner at the plate in the seventh inning to help secure Wednesday’ victory.

Davis singled and scored on a two-out Hunter Lawall triple in the first inning.

Nanticoke tied the game in the fourth, but Kyle Skutack singled with two out in the fifth and scored on a Jeremy Cawley single.

Davis, winning pitcher Casey Noone, Anthony Cencetti and Cam Moser all had hits in the two-run sixth.

Noone allowed just four runners in the first six innings and got the first out of the seventh before Jack Mathis came on to notch the save.

Greater Pittston 11, Wilkes-Barre/Plains 3

Hunter Lawall drove in four runs by going 3-for-3 with a triple in Tuesday’s romp.

Lawall also pitched the last two innings after Aidan Mehal held Wilkes-Barre/Plains to…

Breanna Stewart helps New York Liberty snap Connecticut Sun’s four-game win streak

New York Liberty's Breanna Stewart, who scored a game-high 24 points, elevates for a basket over the Connecticut Sun's DeWanna Bonner during Tuesday night's 89-81 win at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.New York Liberty’s Breanna Stewart, who scored a game-high 24 points, elevates for a basket over the Connecticut Sun’s DeWanna Bonner during Tuesday night’s 89-81 win at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.Sarah Gordon/Associated Press

UNCASVILLE, Conn. ― Breanna Stewart, returning to where she made her name as one of the most decorated women’s players at the University of Connecticut, scored a game-high 24 points on 11-for-17 shooting and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the New York Liberty to an 89-81 WNBA victory over the host Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Courtney Vandersloot added 17 points for the Liberty (10-3) while former Sun player Jonquel Jones added 14 points and 11 rebounds against her former team.

DiJonai Carrington came off the bench to lead the Sun (12-4) with a career-high 23 points on 8-for-11 shooting, hitting all three of her 3-point attempts. Alyssa Thomas (11 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) recorded her fifth career double-double ― and third in seven days ― and capped a 13-0 run that rallied the Sun to an 81-80 lead when she converted a foul-inducing layup with 4:18 left.

The Sun, however, were unable to hold onto that slim margin after going scoreless in the final 3:55 of the game.

The victory moved the Liberty into a tie with Connecticut atop the Commissioner Cup standings in the Eastern Conference. Each team has one game left although New York has the tiebreaker having swept the two games against the Sun. Las Vegas has already wrapped up the Western Conference slot.

SandHill and FANA Chiefs attend Teaneck Juneteenth silent march. First time invited to participate.

On June 17, 2023, Minister of International Affairs and FANA’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Principal Chief Dr. Ronald Yonaguska Holloway of the SandHill Band of Lenape and Cherokee Indians (NY, NJ, PA), and The Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas’ Director, Chief Raymond Two Hawks Watson, Mashapaug Nations; FANA’s Communication Authority Director: Chief Casike/Tureygua Taino Cay, The Cibuco Bayamon Taino Tribe (PR and FL);  FANA’s Director of Visual Media and Digital Content, SandHill Tribal Council member Norris Branham, and FANA’s Director of Indigenous and Cultural Outreach to the United Nations, SandHill Tribal Member Ms. Maria Lorena Cosme attended the Juneteenth Silent March in Teaneck, New Jersey.

For expedience’s sake, I will refer to the SandHill Band of Lenape and Cherokee Indians as the SandHill and the Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas as FANA.

The Minister of International Affairs and FANA’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Principal Chief Dr. Holloway of the SandHill was invited by the organizers of the event as a way of extending a long overdue recognition to the Indigenous people buried in the sacred site.

He then invited the members of FANA to attend the Silent march that was the kickoff to the Juneteenth weekend celebrations in Teaneck.

The event started on the Fairleigh Dickenson University Hackensack Campus by the statue of Reverend Martin Luther King. The silent march took them from the Campus to the bridge connecting the Hackensack Campus with the Teaneck Campus to the Native American and enslaved African Burial Ground located on Pomander Walk in Teaneck, Nj.

The current burial ground is a small remnant of what had once been a very large sacred burial site near the Hackensack River.

With the arrival of the Europeans came the enslavement of both Indigenous and African peoples. It was not unusual…

Summer Fun Cardboard Boat Race

Skip to content Morning Star Publications Logo

It’s that time of the year again when you start saving cardboard, get a team together, design and build a boat that can take you 100 yards (half that for kids)!  Besides all the fun building a boat, it’s fun to compete and some would say even more fun to cheer on the competitors! Past participants have even found that it’s also great advertising for your business, church, club and youth groups.

So, come to the Nanticoke River Marina in Blades at 11 a.m. on Aug. 5 (raindate Aug. 6) and join in the festivities, whether it’s enjoying a Delmarva Model Boat Club demonstration, visiting our partner displays, voting for People’s Choice Award, cheering on competitors or simply enjoying our grilled angus burgers and all-beef hot dogs!

This is Reclaim Our River-Nanticoke’s seventh regatta and is the group’s only fundraiser to support our year’s worth of educational, recreational and restoration programs. Go to nanticokeriver.org/rcbr or call Nan Zamorski at 434-294-3736 for any questions.

West Chester Green Team’s Legendary Lenape series under way

The West Chester Green Team launched its summer family education series on Saturday, June 24, during a rare break in the weekend’s downpours.

A group of almost 40 people of all ages gathered at West Chester Friends Meeting House to hear Chris Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown.  Applegate spoke about the daily lives of the Lenape tribe 500 years ago, before the arrival of colonists.  She displayed dozens of items including a pair of elk-hide moccasins.  Pennsylvania, she told her audience, is the home of the largest elk herd in the country, living appropriately in Elk County.  In so many other ways, however, there have been vast changes since those times.  Now the Lenape live as others do, with cell phones, cars, and jobs.

Applegate talked about the importance of music to the tribe and showed a turtle shell rattle and shakers made from deer hoofs.  She demonstrated a bow and arrows, as well as a spear.   A Lenape style cradle board with a life-size doll in it, carried by a strap on the forehead, not by shoulder straps as are modern baby packs. was also shown.  Applegate described the grinding of corn and the growing of “Three Sisters” vegetables, with corn in the center and beans and squash by its side, asking audience participants to volunteer to play the roles of the vegetables.  Planting in this way insured the health of the crops and, when eaten together, “the three sisters” provided healthy, balanced nutrition.

“Wanishi” means thank you in the Lenape language, with generosity the core value of the culture. In her concluding…

Huge fire takes out Lenape Arena

By LAURIE STUART

NARROWSBURG, NY — On Friday afternoon, June 23, a fire tore through the headquarters of Lang Industries. By Monday morning, owner Ned Lang was working at a temporary desk in a trailer on a small hill above the twisted metal hulk of the former Lenape Arena, 2.5 miles south of the hamlet of Narrowsburg. He was on the phone with one of his workers who was picking up supplies and planning the rebuild.

“I lost 40 years of tools, equipment and trucks,” he said, as he surveyed the damage that had, in a matter of minutes, devoured the steel and wood building.

“I was in Carbondale when my wife called me,” he said. “And I could hear the explosions; it sounded like Beirut. But thank God, no one was killed. Everyone got out.”

A worker who had just returned from a truck run let himself into a locked area to put gas into a lawn mower. Unfortunately, he entered the closed space with a lit cigarette. The worker received second degree burns on his forearms and is expected to make a full recovery, Lang said.

“I’ve got trucks already ordered from New Holland and we’ll be up and running as soon as we can,” Lang said, adding that it was lucky that his solid waste facility, located just beyond the arena building, was not damaged. “The paint isn’t even blistered,” he said.

Firefighters from Lava and Narrowsburg were alerted for a structure fire with a victim burned shortly after 12 noon. Upon arrival, Narrowsburg Fire Department Fire Chief David Casey requested initial mutual aid with a full response from Yulan Fire Department and Lake Huntington Fire Company. The victim was treated by EMS from Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Service, Highland Ambulance Service and Mobilemedic EMS and transported to…

Brother to Beach Glass sharp over off track

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Developing younger harness racing pacers had a $16,000 feature race for each sex conducted over off going on Tuesday (June 27) afternoon at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania.

The males were led by the Stay Hungry sophomore gelding Im Hungry, a three-quarter brother to millionaire Beach Glass, a PA Stallion Series winner, and now triumphant in three consecutive starts after a 1:51.4 mile over a “sloppy” oval.

Im Hungry holds off Bay City at the finish (Curtis Salonick Photo)

The track’s leading driver, Matt Kakaley, tucked in third with the winner as Oak Grove shipper Bay City led the field past the quarter in :27.2, then brushed to command in front of the stands and reached the half in :56.3 and the three-quarters in 1:24.3.

Bay City came out of the pocket to give good chase down the stretch in the :27.1 kicker, but he came up a neck shy of Im Hungry, who is trained by Travis Alexander and owned by Brent McGrath of Somebeachsomewhere fame.

IM HUNGRY REPLAY

The same basic storyline was followed in the section for distaffs, with the Lazarus N three-year-old filly Anna’s Wish equaling her mark of 1:52.2 over a surface upgraded to “good” before the race. Tyler Buter had a post inside all the main leavers and put them all in behind early, enabling him to guide his filly through fractions of :27.2, :57, and 1:24.1.

Sweet Home swung wide from second-over in the stretch and was doing nicely late, but Anna’s Wish was able to keep that one at bay by a half-length for trainer Jenn Bongiorno and owners Robert Weinstein and Jordon Sklut.

ANNA’S WISH REPLAY

The two feature race-winning drivers, Tyler…
