William Penn and the Lenape: The Peace Treaty That Shaped Pennsylvania’s Identity

I must let you know that I am trying hard to embrace all the pumpkin spice products I have shied away from in the past. The jury is still out. And I am not happy with the bakery pumpkin roll I bought recently that had buttercream instead of my cream cheese filling. What is the world coming to? I can’t be the only person out there who associates a pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling.

Moving along, I have had a curiosity about William Penn’s early interactions with Native Americans, more specifically the Lenape (Delaware) tribe, since these occurred within a few decades of the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Young Lady Tigers look to improve on court

Tunkhannock's Mackenzie Gregory gets past Lackawanna Trail's Hannah Phillips during a game on Wednesday, Dec. 11.Tunkhannock’s Mackenzie Gregory gets past Lackawanna Trail’s Hannah Phillips during a game on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

More steps forward, that’s what the Tunkhannock Lady Tigers are hoping for in their 2025-26 campaign.

After a 9-14 record last season, the Lady Tigers come into this season still very young, but not short on varsity experience as many seniors have seen the court early on in their careers. Although Tunkhannock has a smaller team than in year’s past, head coach Dan Williams said this is a hard working group of girls who are eager to get better every day.

“These girls have developed a lot of cohesion,” Williams said. “This year we’re planning to play in a way that we’re able to get almost everyone individual time which I think is going to strengthen the unit. The girls have been working really hard, doing a great job and enjoying each other.”

Among the returning players with varsity experience are senior Olivia Williams who will enter her third year as the starting point guard. She provided a steady hand as a ball handler and defender last season, and is looking to become a better all-around player and leader this season.

“I’m trying to be more aggressive and score and drive a little bit more,” Olivia Williams said. “I’ve been playing a long time with these girls and know them all very well. We all love each other so the team chemistry has been very good so far.”

Sophomore Elizabeth Moore will lead the Lady Tigers in the low post. She got her feet wet as a freshmen last year, and really showed some promise as a reserve to leading scorer Lourianna Alston. She’ll…

Mohican Christkindlmarkt brings European holiday charm to downtown Loudonville

LOUDONVILLE — The magic of a traditional European Christmas market is coming to
downtown Loudonville this December as the village prepares to host its first-ever Mohican
Christkindlmarkt.

The festive outdoor market is inspired by centuries-old holiday traditions in Germany, Austria, and throughout Europe. The market will be open to the public the first two weekends in December (Dec. 5-6, and Dec. 12-13) from 5 to 9 p.m.

Originating in the 14th century, Christkindlmarkts began as advent street fairs in German towns, where merchants and artisans gathered to sell handmade gifts, seasonal foods, and warm drinks.

Loudonville’s own market will capture that same nostalgic charm with wooden vendor cabins, glowing string lights, fire pits, and the scent of evergreens filling the air along North and South Water Streets in the heart of the village’s downtown.

The event is quickly coming together thanks to a remarkable community effort. Cabins are being built by the Construction Technologies students at the Heartland Technical Education Center, Boy Scouts, and other volunteers, creating an authentic, handcrafted atmosphere that mirrors the tradition of European markets. Several local businesses and foundations have also contributed to make the market a reality.

Visitors can look forward to a delightful mix of food trucks, fresh-cut Christmas trees, baked goods, local treats, handmade gifts, imported German decor, and traditional holiday items. Some food trucks and vendors will rotate weekly, ensuring that every visit offers something new to discover.

Adding to the cozy community spirit, Loudonville’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) will be in effect throughout the event, allowing adults to enjoy beer, wine, and other beverages outdoors while strolling the market and taking in the lights and music.

Krampusnacht, Christmas parade

Dec. 5 also coincides with Krampusnacht, a playful alpine tradition honoring Krampus — the mischievous companion to Saint Nicholas who…

Azzi Fudd and UConn are set for their first top-10 matchup of the season tonight against Michigan (Photo credit: UConn athletics)

Michigan celebrated matching its second-highest ranking in program history earlier this week with its most-lopsided win of the season (120-50 vs Binghamton). The Wolverines will almost certainly surpass their program-best No. 4 ranking in the next poll if they emerge from their visit to Mohegan Sun this weekend unscathed. Waiting for Michigan at the world’s most famous arena under a casino in Connecticut are the reigning national champions, who haven’t missed a beat while extending their win streak, which started in February, to 20 games.

This will be Michigan’s third encounter with an opponent ranked No. 1 in the AP poll since the start of last season when it lost to South Carolina by six points to open the 2024-25 campaign and UCLA by 16 points on New Year’s Day. Big Blue is 0-3 all-time against AP No. 1 opponents, with the loss before last season coming against Iowa in 1988. By contrast, UConn is 8-1 as the No. 1 team against teams ranked as highly as Michigan over just the last 10 seasons. What a wild comparison!

Michigan’s last win was its most lopsided, but the…

Reflections on Native American Heritage Month

Written By: Marissa McClenton

November is Native American Heritage Month, and I want to encourage folks to reflect on the legacy of stewardship, conservation, and the rich traditions that indigenous peoples have maintained for centuries. As environmental and other protections come under attack from the federal administration, it can feel like we are losing the battle for our environment and the plants, animals, and people that call it home. When I reflect on the ways that indigenous folks globally, and the Nanticoke and Lenni-Lenape Nations locally, have persisted despite horrific attempts to erase culture, ancestry, and ties to the land- I feel a deep sense of gratitude, appreciation, and wonder that give me hope. In this moment, uplifting Native American heritage and stewardship practices feels like a crucial piece to building a better world.

One of the groups that has brought this realization to life for me is The Native Roots Farm Foundation, a Native (Lenape) and woman-led nonprofit with a mission to “reclaiming, cultivating, and celebrating Native relationships with land, plants, and community for the next Seven Generations.” For years, they have connected the native plants with which many are familiar with their names in native languages and held other events to highlight rich cultural practices like beadwork. When I look back at the events they host across the Delmarva region, it reminds me how much knowledge about caring for the natural world is missing from larger environmental conversations. This is what I hope folks can reflect on if they celebrate Thanksgiving, a day The United American Indians of New England protest as a National Day of Mourning, which can serve as a reminder of both the resilience, oppression, and rich ancestry of indigenous peoples here and around the globe.

In a country where apathy towards people and the environment is…

Shia Coordination Framework discusses PM selection criteria

BAGHDAD — The Shiite Coordination Framework held its regular meeting on Monday in Baghdad to address constitutional and political requirements following the November 11 parliamentary elections.

According to a statement, the meeting took place at the office of Hadi al-Amiri, head of the Badr Organization, and included discussion of the criteria for selecting the next prime minister. Attendees examined qualifications such as competence, integrity, and the ability to manage the state and address upcoming challenges.

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission last week released the final results of the Nov. 11 vote, confirming turnout above 56 percent and publishing the full distribution of all 329 seats.

“The mechanism for selection within the Framework will be based on clear national standards,” the statement said.

Participants also reviewed a report from two leadership committees formed in a previous meeting. The committees will continue assessing candidates and discussing national entitlements.

The Islamic Dawa Party on Saturday named its secretary-general, Nouri al-Maliki, as its candidate for Iraq’s next prime minister, moving formally into the post-election contest for the premiership. Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has also declared his intention to seek a second term. Speaking at the Middle East Peace and Security Forum in Duhok, he said the bid “is not a personal ambition” and framed it as a commitment to complete the agenda of his current government, while confirming that the Coordination Framework will begin negotiations to form the next administration.

The statement reaffirmed the Framework’s “full commitment to constitutional obligations and the deadlines for forming the next government, in a way that preserves political stability and respects the will of the voters.”

Once the results are certified, the president of the republic must convene the new parliament, which then elects a speaker before choosing a president. The president tasks the nominee of the largest bloc with forming a cabinet, and the…

Creator’s blessings fill life with all you need

I was asked if I would write letter telling the readers what I am thankful for. Well, where do I start?

I would have to say waking up every morning, always a good start. Thankful for the ability to give thanks to the Creator and Mother Earth every day. Then the obvious — my family, my wife, Jackie, of 38 years, and our two sons, two beautiful daughters-in-law and their families, which include four granddaughters.

I am thankful for my extended family, Jackie’s extended family, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. When you don’t get to see them as often as you would like, you appreciate the time together even more.

Thankful for those who you consider your true friends and never taking those relationships for granted. When you think about it, you can go through life and count your true friends on one hand — if lucky, two hands. The rest are just acquaintances.

I am thankful for the community I live in. I have been blessed with the house we have and I have lived in for the past 66 years. Thankful for Stockbridge-Munsee community I’ve been employed by for the past 45 years. I’ve been elected to three different units of government — Tribal Council, Bowler School Board and now Shawano County Board of Supervisors. This is an honor and a responsibility that I never take for granted.

Lastly, being somewhat of an outdoorsman, thankful for the four seasons we enjoy; the good thing about them is you appreciate the next seasonal transition all the more. Ice fishing, spring maple syrup season, summer fishing and camping, planting the wife’s garden, then the fall harvest and filling the freezer with venison.

May the Creator bless you all.

Joe Miller is a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee community.
