PENGUINS STUNNED BY SENATORS IN OVERTIME, 3-2

BOXSCORE

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were defeated by the Belleville Senators in overtime, 3-2, on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

A goal from Jacob Larsson gave the Senators the comeback victory halfway into the extra session. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (5-4-1-0) still gained a point in the standings thanks to a lights-out performance by its special teams.

A first-period power-play goal from Austin Rueschhoff put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ahead, 1-0. Rueschhoff tipped in a thundering slap shot by Xavier Ouellet at 7:24, to give the Penguins power-play goals in six of their last seven games.

That lead for the Penguins persisted until late in the second period, when Senators forward Angus Crookshank tallied off a faceoff win.

Colin White conjured another man-advantage marker for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with under five minutes left to play. White launched a wrist shot off the crossbar and in, putting the Penguins in a 2-1 lead.

However, the Senators tied the game with an extra-attacker goal with 33.6 seconds remaining in regulation. Garrett Pilon swept in a loose puck, sending the contest to overtime.

Penguins goalie Taylor Gauthier made two strong stops on odd-man rushes in OT, but a rebound collected off his pads by Pilon was ushered back to the blue line for Larsson. Larsson found the back of the net, ending the game.

Gauthier, who was making his season debut for the Penguins, stopped 26 shots. Senators netminder, Leevi Meriläinen, made 27 saves for the Senators.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is back on the ice Friday, Nov. 10, to take on the Syracuse Crunch. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Upstate Medical University Arena. The back-to-back, home-and-home set with the Crunch returns to Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday, Nov. 11. Saturday’s rematch will begin at 6:05 p.m.

In Corsica, director Frédéric Farrucci is filming “Un Mohican”, a fiction about a shepherd’s fight against the mafia

For his second feature film, the Corsican director set up his cameras in several regions of the island of beauty. The storyline follows the pressures the mafia puts on a goat breeder.

The Aléria gendarmerie attacked by hooded demonstrators, police officers who respond with tear gas grenades, shouts of anger, this very realistic sequence is in fact only a fictional scene. The extras take part in the filming of the next film of Frederic Farrucci.

The director has just finished filming his second film, A Mohican. And it’s at home, in Corsica, that all the action takes place.

Filming the Mohican in Corsica

Film shooting the Mohican in Corsica – (France 3 Corse / P. Salort / E. Giugliano / S. Regoli)

The story ofA Mohican tells of the pressures that the Corsican mafia puts on a shepherd to recover his land and transform it into a real estate project. The universal battle of the pot of earth against the pot of iron anchored on the island territory and shot in the style of a contemporary western. “It’s the story of a man who says ‘no’ in relation to the ambient movement, in relation to the evolution of our society. He doesn’t have a political speech, he just says ‘no, that doesn’t’ is not possible for me’”, explains director Frédéric Farrucci.

The issues of speculation and mafia pressure recur throughout the film. For the director, dealing with current issues constitutes the very essence of the 7th art. “It is the role of cinema to address societal issues. If there is not a political imprint in cinema, it does not interest me. For me, treating contemporary Corsica is something essential in this fiction”, he…

Native Americans educate, embolden community during November’s heritage month

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — This November kicks off Native American Heritage Month.

The Native American Indian Association of Tennessee (NAIATN) said this month and every month, they want to embrace their culture and educate others about it.

Shayna Hobbs, part of the organization, adds Native people may be connecting to people now more than ever.

“We don’t have to be ashamed of who we are. We don’t have to hide who we are,” said Hobbs.

Young Native Americans are using TikTok, Instagram, and various other apps to show their traditions and celebrate who they are.

Hobbs, of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican tribe, said although Tennessee does not have any reservations, Native people are still in your cities, on your screens, and involved in the community.

“I think it’s really, really important for Native people to reclaim our narrative and tell our story from our perspective,” she said.

She added that another way they are hoping to connect is through a future cultural center in Southeast Nashville along Bell Road.

NAIATN has owned the land near Antioch for decades, and it’s a place where they hope to one day gather as a group, celebrate their own and educate non-Natives.

“To actually have a space for Native people for the first time in history since they were removed is really huge.”

They say with donations and increased awareness, they can make it happen.

“People are curious and they want to do the right thing. They want to help, they want to be made aware, they want to educate themselves,” she said.

You can donate, volunteer, or learn more about their vision for the land here.

Students Learn First-Hand About Emergency Preparedness

Four University of Scranton students participated in an emergency management drill in Luzerne County for the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. The students are all members of W3USR: The University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club, pursuing majors offered through the Department of Physics and Engineering and the Computing Sciences Department.

“The students were participating in the drill as members Luzerne County Amateur Radio Emergency Services at the City of Nanticoke Emergency Operations Center (EOC). … An important part of the EOC is communications between the Municipal and County EOC,” said Dave Skoniecki, an emergency preparedness coordinator for Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, explaining that each municipal EOC provides a back-up means of communication in case the primary communication channel becomes unavailable. “The Luzerne County Amateur Radio Emergency Services plays an important role in these drills and exercises and we greatly appreciate the participation of The University of Scranton students in the community.”

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of trained radio amateurs who provide public service communications support. Trained amateur radio operators serve communities when storms or other disasters damage critical communication infrastructure, including cell towers, and wired and wireless networks. Amateur radio can function completely independently of the internet and phone systems. An amateur radio station can be set up almost anywhere in minutes.

University students who participated were: James P. (JP) Fox, Hillsborough, New Jersey, a computer science major in his senior year at Scranton; Gerard N. Piccini, Monroe Township, New Jersey, an electrical engineering major in his junior year; Thomas J. Pisano, Staten Island, New York, an electrical engineering major in his junior year; and Stephen Salamon, Wayne, New Jersey, a mechanical engineering major in his freshman year at Scranton.

Nathaniel Frissell, Ph.D., assistant professor physics and electrical engineering, serves as moderator for W3USR: The University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club.

Concert review: Jethro Tull entertains followers at Mohegan Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — One of the most unique groups in the history of rock music is still touring in their seventh decade.

Jethro Tull, with their distinctive sound, performed Sunday night at Mohegan Sun Arena as part of their latest global tour.

Led by flutist/singer/songwriter Ian Anderson, 76, the show was broken down into two parts.

A mix of new material and old, including several rarer tunes, from an array of albums, filled the song sets.

The legendary British progressive art rock group, whose music touches on folk, classical, blues, and jazz, has always been theatrical, and songs were accompanied by video on a large screen behind the band.

Anderson was his usual animated self, shuffling around the stage playing his flute, an instrument he introduced to rock ‘n roll and still remains rare for the genre.

Jethro Tull came out with a new album in April and the first two songs in the concert were “Nothing is Easy” and a new version of “We Used to Know,” that the Eagles — which at one time opened for Jethro Tull — used some chords from for “Hotel California.”

“Heavy Horses” was a folky tune, and “Sweet Dream” was an appropriate song for Halloween, with clips of horror characters on the screen.

“Hunt by the Numbers” and an early Christmas number, “Holly Herald,” were followed by another new song, “Wolf Unchained.”

Then came “Mine is the Mountain,” which depicted God on the 2022 album, and “Bourree,” a Bach cover that saw Anderson jamming with bassist David Goodier, who co-sang on the lengthy “Farm on the Freeway.”

After another new number, “The Navigator,” about gods and sailors, was “Zealot Gene,” which is about social media and was on that titled album from two years ago — the group’s first studio album in nearly two decades.

Anderson warned…

Marvel's Echo Series Trailer

“You and I are the same. So… who’s the monster?” Marvel has revealed the first trailer for a gritty, dark new Marvel Studios streaming series called Echo, arriving for streaming January 2024. This is a sort-of sequel to the Hawkeye series, more of a spin-off following a different character on her own adventures. After the events in Hawkeye in New York, Maya Lopez returns to her hometown in Oklahoma, where she must come to terms with her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace her family and community. She’s pursued by Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) criminal empire coming after revenge. Alaqua Cox (Menominee / Mohican) stars as Maya Lopez, with a cast including Chaske Spencer, Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, and Cody Lightning. All five episodes will be released in January, making Echo the first series from Marvel Studios to make all eps available to binge in one day. That doesn’t seem like a good sign. But this footage does look pretty badass. Maybe it will be good?

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Marvel’s Echo, direct from Marvel’s YouTube:
