Delaware District 3 surrenders lead late to fall in World Series

The Delaware District 3 team certainly must have been having a case of déjà vu last Sunday, Aug. 7, when they battled it out with Southwest (District 9, Waco, Texas) in the Senior League Softball World Series championship final on Layton Field at the Lower Sussex Little League Complex at the Pyle Center in Roxana.

The local contingent jumped out to a 3-0 lead and seemed to be playing with much confidence, especially with one of the largest crowds the tournament has seen in all the years it has been played in Roxana. Kinsley Hall was mowing the Southwest hitters down, and her defense was flawless behind her.

Until that one fateful inning… again.

Just like in their loss to Southwest in pool play on Tuesday, Aug. 5, Delaware District 3 somehow lost the momentum, and thereby the game, when the team from Texas had their bats come alive. Southwest collected six of their eight hits in the game during their 9-run 6th inning, with the biggest blow coming from K. Alonzo as she ripped a pitch deep over the left-centerfield fence for a grand-slam home run and a 9-3 Southwest lead.

The girls from District 3 were stunned. The many fans from all over the area — many from Delaware and Maryland — were speechless. Collectively, they could not believe it had happened again.

“We knew they were a good team and could hit the ball well,” said District 3 head coach Sarah Hoban. “This was a seven-inning game, and six of those innings I was really proud of the way they played,” she said of her team. “Just that one inning… This whole World Series, we had two bad innings — both against this team — and we’re just gonna try to hold onto the good innings, the good memories.

“They played hard…

16-year-old Mane Pakootas brings home second place; Defending champion Riley Prescott places fifth

OMAK, Wash. – It felt just like old times for Tyler Peasley.

Peasley a Colville tribal member and his family horse Mohican didn’t get the best start, but they managed to push through, going on to cross the finish line in first place on Thursday night in the first of four races at this year’s World Famous Suicide Race in Omak.

“First race, what a way to break him in right,” said Peasley after the race. “That horse is one that our family raised, it comes from our bloodlines.”

It’s been since 2011 that Peasley has won the Overall title as he expressed what it would mean to win it all this year.

“It would be insane for me,” Peasley said. “It would be crazy, I live for this race.“

The youngest rider in this year’s race, is Colville tribal member Mane Pakootas having just turned 16 this past June. Pakootas and his horse Lonesome would go on to place second. Lonesome is owned by George Marchand.

UN official says Iraqi Kurds should agree ‘elections soon’

The United Nation’s top official in Iraq has stressed that all Kurdish political parties should reach a settlement soon on the Kurdistan Region’s upcoming parliamentary elections.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Special Representative Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert is reportedly concerned about the political deadlock in the Iraqi Kurdistan region with parties still unable to agree on upcoming parliamentary elections, a source has told The New Arab

Hosted by the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, five of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s main political parties convened for a third time in Erbil on Wednesday to discuss upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for 1 October.

Plasschaert also attended the meeting and was unhappy about the current stalemate, the source said.

“Plasschaert expressed concern that the meetings are not yet fruitful and that the Kurdish political parties should settle their differences as soon as possible so that a new date [for voting] can be chosen after the postponement of parliamentary elections,” a source who attended the meeting told The New Arab.

“She also expressed concerns that if the Kurdish political parties did not reach a settlement soon, the situation in the Kurdistan region [could be as] destabilised as the rest of Iraq.”

Plasschaert previously headed a meeting with top officials from the Kurdish political parties in Erbil on 26 May in a bid to seal an agreement on upcoming elections. She also participated in another meeting with the political parties on 9 June.

Key issues are impeding the chances of elections being held in October, including differences among Kurdish political parties over the composition of the electoral commission and calls for amending the region’s decades-old election law.

“Mrs. Plasschaert delivered a speech about…

Since childhood, Zhawanoogbiik Danielle Riley has dreamed of having her own place to care for animals.

It has led the 16-year-old from Chippewas of the Thames, an Anishinaabe First Nations band government just west of St. Thomas, Ont., to become a youth semifinalist in an Indigenous startup competition, with a chance to win $25,000 to grow her business.

Now, she provides free pet food and supplies to those in Chippewas of the Thames, Munsee-Delaware Nation and Oneida Nation of the Thames communities who need it — all while taking care of her ducks, chickens, rabbits, horses, cats and geese at the family’s Riley Ranch On Three Fires, on the property where they also have their home.

Her pitch was selected from more than 2,400 Pow Wow Pitch applicants from across North America after submitting a one-minute video about her project. Winners will be announced during a digitally broadcast awards presentation on Nov. 3.

Need is growing

Riley noticed it was getting harder for people to access pet food and care for their animals during the pandemic, so she decided to do something about it.

Nanticoke Indian Tribe to host annual powwow Sept. 10-11

Representatives of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe this week announced additional details for the upcoming 44th annual Powwow, set for Sept. 10-11 at Hudson Fields.

“In the powwow circle, we celebrate life and honorable deeds for both the living and those who have crossed over. We are taught that by honoring individuals, and we encourage the next generation to embrace the unlimited possibilities of the world,” they said.

This year’s powwow will feature authentic native crafts, clothing, jewelry, books and commemorative items of the Nanticoke Tribe that will be available for purchase throughout the weekend, as well as Native American food.

One of the traditional dances at the powwow is the Jingle Dance.

“Known also as the healing dance, the Jingle Dance originated with the Ojibwe in the Great Lakes region. The dress itself is said to have originated as a means of healing a medicine man’s granddaughter. In a dream, the elder was told to construct a jingle dress and have his granddaughter dance in it — and she was healed,” they related.

“The colorful dress is covered with rolled up snuff can lids attached with bright colored ribbons. The jingles are close enough together to hit one another, creating a near musical, happy sound much like rain. Dancers perform simple zigzag steps — no high stepping or fancy footwork — and make the jingles sway. The jingles are attached to soft cloth, such as taffeta or cotton. The dancer is judged by her footwork and grace.”

The 50 Native American crafts and food vendors are open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Powwow is being held at Hudson Fields, 30045 Eagle Crest Road, Milton. Parking is free. For more information, call the Nanticoke Indian Center at (302) 945-3400, the Nanticoke Indian Museum at (302) 945-7022, e-mail info@nanticokeindians.org, check the…

Lenape Nation travelers journey hundreds of miles to renew a years-old treaty with Delaware River communities

On Wednesday, a collection of colorful canoes appeared on the horizon of the Lenape Sipu (Delaware River) at Scott Park in Easton, growing larger and clearer by the moment. As the canoers paddled swiftly to shore, their singing and splashing filled the air. The paddlers are members of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, and have rowed over 100 miles since the start of their journey.

The paddlers are participants in the sixth Rising Nation River Journey, a quadrennial odyssey in which Lenape rowers carry a Treaty of Renewed Friendship down the Lenape Sipu and hold treaty signings at locations along the way. This year’s journey marks the event’s 20th anniversary.

The paddlers began July 30 in Hancock, New York, and will conclude Aug. 20 in Cape May, New Jersey. There are 13 treaty signing destinations on their path, including the Sigal Museum in Easton.

The Lenape are the original inhabitants of Eastern Pennsylvania. By signing the Treaty of Renewed Friendship, organizations and individuals acknowledge the Lenape’s origins in the region and commit to supporting them in their stewardship of the land. The River Journey tradition aims to raise awareness for the presence and heritage of the Lenape people, encourage respect for their homeland, celebrate and pass on their culture. They are also fundraising for their cultural center in Easton.

“We do this every four years in order to get people to support us in taking care of the river and trying to keep it clean,” said Ken Macaulay, former cultural chief of the Lenape Cultural Center.

The Lenape also journey to interact with their land. The section of the Lenape Sipu below the Delaware Water Gap through the Easton area is one of the “most sacred, powerful” parts of the river, head coordinator Adam Waterbear DePaul said.

The River Journey also holds significance for…
