Crowds of angry demonstrators loyal to the powerful cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have broken into the secure area where government buildings are located despite security forces using tear gas and water cannons to disperse them.
The protesters then stormed the parliament, according to Iraqi State News agency (INA). Videos circulating on social media appeared to show people waving the Iraqi flag walking past security through the doors of parliament.
At least 125 people have been injured, including 100 civilians and 25 military personnel, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) described the recent escalation in tensions as « deeply concerning. »
« Voices of reason and wisdom are critical to prevent further violence. All actors are encouraged to de-escalate in the interest of all Iraqis » UNAMI said in a tweet.
Outgoing Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, who is currently Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, has called for peace and for demonstrators « not to escalate the situation. »
In a statement Saturday, he asked protesters to abide by the orders of security forces and stressed security forces « have a duty to protect official institutions and emphasized the need to take all legal measures to maintain order. »
The protests began after Mohammed Shiya al-Sudani was formally nominated to lead the country on Monday by the Coordination Framework, the largest Shiite alliance in the Iraqi parliament.

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Bet Eightthirtyone (Betting Line) stormed home in the deep Pocono Pike to win the $13,000 harness racing pacing feature on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 2) at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono in 1:55.1.
The race was conducted as a downpour came through the area; though the rain soon stopped, this would be the last event before the track was rerated from “fast” to “sloppy.”
Bet Eightthirtytwo and driver Marcus Miller (Curtis Salonick Photo)
Marcus Miller got the victorious gelding away third as Mister David C set the pace ahead of favored Stormy Beach, with second choice Letmecallyouback advancing via the always-tough tuck-then-first-over route and Ripplesonthebeach right on his back.
As they turned for home, Stormy Beach ducked to the inside of the pacesetter, but it soon became clear that the horse with the most pace was the one right behind him, as Bet Eightthirtyone gave a sharp burst when shown inside clearance and reached the wire three-quarters of a length ahead of Ripplesonthebeach, the only other horse moving with real velocity late.
BET EIGHTTHIRTYONE REPLAY
Marcus Miller’s father Erv trains the winner, who notched his first success of the season while missing his lifetime best by only a tick for owner D R Van Witzenburg. The gelding is three-for-18 lifetime with $32,584 in earnings.
The sky was sunny, though the track remained sloppy, by the time that No Drama Please (Trixton) accounted for the $12,500 co-featured trot, brushing to the lead in front of the stands and keeping control for a 1:55 victory.
Tom Fanning trains the gelding, now a winner of $396,838, for owner Joseph Smith. For driver George Napolitano Jr., the victory was one of four on the day.

A newly released map shows for the first time in detail the controversial proposal to create a national park around the Delaware River, from the Delaware Water Gap north nearly to the New York state border.
The plan to re-designate the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area as a full-fledged national park made a resurgence last year and has been met with resistance from residents, outdoors organizations and local governments who have said they need to know more about the proposal and its potential impacts. Any change in designation would require an act of Congress.
The map was provided to lehighvalleylive.com on Friday by the Alliance for the Delaware River National Park and Lenape Preserve, a committee of the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania and New Jersey chapters and other interested groups. The proposed boundaries break what is now the 70,000-acre national recreation area into two main sections.
The Delaware River National Park portion would cover 9,760 acres mostly along the riverbanks in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, starting a couple of miles north of the water gap and extending just south of Milford, Pennsylvania. There are two spurs totaling 1,330 acres to incorporate the Raymondskill and Dingmans creeks and waterfalls.
The outlying 56,000 acres would be the federal Lenape Preserve, where backers say hunting would still be allowed — addressing a major complaint from opponents.
The Delaware Water Gap itself, where I-80 and the Appalachian Trail wind through a pass cut by the river, would be split between the federal park and state lands, much as it is now.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is within a couple of hours of New York City and Philadelphia. The federal parklands drew an estimated 4 million visitors in 2021, comparable to the Grand Canyon or…

Early on Saturday, protesters broke into Baghdad’s high-security neighborhood known as the Green Zone, where government buildings and foreign embassies are located, and launched a sit-in at parliament. The prime minister has ordered security forces to maintain order. The Iraqi health ministry said 125 of his people, including 25 security guards, were injured in the disturbance. Supporters of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have rallied against the candidacy of Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani, who was nominated by the Coordination Framework Alliance, the largest bloc in Iraq’s parliament representing Shia forces. Protesters stormed parliament once last Wednesday, winning parliamentary elections in October, but turned to the opposition in May and were called upon by Al Sadr after resigning in June. After that, I agreed to leave. Several failed attempts to form a government.

There are many reasons to consider a latest-generation games console, but the ability to get quickly into a game ranks as one of the most obvious attractions.
Compared to last-gen hardware, the presence of solid-state storage has transformed the gameplay experience. Tiresome load screens have become a thing of the past, and with the likes of Xbox Quick Resume, it literally takes seconds to pick up where you left off.
Such improvements extend to the console boot sequence, and Xbox Insiders have discovered that Series S|X are starting up some five seconds quicker. What technical wizardry has Microsoft called upon to deliver such gains? Well, sometimes the simplest fixes are the best, and in this instance it is merely a shorter boot animation.
Xbox integrated marketing director Josh Munsee confirmed the tweak on Twitter, stating that the revised animation is shortened in length from nine seconds to just four. A shame for those who enjoy marvelling at the wonder of the Xbox logo and that deafening sound, but great news for everyone eager to get into an actual game.

Aug. 4—NANTICOKE — A Nanticoke man facing allegations he aimed a handgun at a Nanticoke police officer and two child caseworkers with Luzerne County Children and Youth Services was charged Wednesday with placing a firearm in a pregnant woman’s mouth.
Nanticoke police filed felony assault charges against Cory Gonzalez Crudop, 40, after investigating the woman’s claims.
The woman reported, according to court records, Crudop threw a car battery through the windshield of her vehicle that was occupied by two children on July 12. She ran into her residence on Hill Street in an attempt to hide a firearm from Crudop, court records say.
Crudop chased after the woman and managed to get his hands on the firearm he allegedly placed in the woman’s mouth threatening to kill her and punched her in her stomach. Police said the woman is pregnant.
Crudop was arraigned by District Judge Thomas F. Malloy Sr. in Luzerne County Central Court on two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment, and one count each of aggravated assault of an unborn child, criminal mischief and harassment. Malloy remanded Crudop to the county correctional facility without bail deeming him a flight risk.
Crudop has been jailed since his arrest by Nanticoke police on July 14 following an incident at the Hill Street residence.
Police assisted two child caseworkers with a welfare check on the two children at the residence since the children’s mother was living with Crudop.
The welfare check was performed due to the July 12 incident.
When officers knocked on the door, the woman initially refused to allow them inside. She instead, suggested she bring the children outside.
Child caseworkers wanted to inspect the interior of the house for safety and to determine if Crudop was inside.
The mother relented and allowed police and caseworkers inside but stood and blocked the basement door,…
