Luzerne County Man Sentenced To 42 Months’ Imprisonment For Covid-Relief And Credit Card Fraud, And Identity Theft Offenses

SCRANTON- The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced today that Reynard Lewis, age 30, formerly of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, was sentenced by United States District Judge Robert D. Mariani to 42 months of imprisonment, for wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft offenses.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, Lewis and his coconspirators used stolen identities to create forged identification documents and credit and debit cards.  The conspirators used those forged items and stolen identities to open bank accounts, apply for lines of credit, and obtain retail merchandise.  The conspirators also used the stolen identities to apply for multiple COVID-19 pandemic relief loans issued under the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), including by submitted false federal tax documentation.  The conspirators allegedly received over $100,000 in pandemic stimulus funds.

The PPP is designed to help small businesses facing financial difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Funded by the March 2020 CARES Act, PPP funds are offered in forgivable loans, provided that certain criteria are met, including use of the funds for employee payroll, mortgage interest, lease, and utilities expenses.

Lewis previously was charged in a criminal complaint and arrested on September 16, 2022.  He has remained in detention since his arrest.  Lewis’s alleged coconspirator, Robert Brownstein, age 51, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was previously charged in a criminal information with wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, and the Pottsville Bureau of Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Phillip J. Caraballo is prosecuting the case.

On May 17, 2021, the Attorney General established the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force to marshal the resources of the Department of Justice in partnership with agencies across government to enhance efforts to combat and prevent pandemic-related…

Convicted murderer who escaped Chester County Prison spotted on surveillance video in Pocopson Twp.

POCOPSON TWP., Pennsylvania (WPVI) — The manhunt continues for a convicted murderer who escaped the Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township, Pennsylvania.

Federal and local law enforcement have been searching for 34-year-old Danelo Cavalcante since his 8:50 a.m. escape on Thursday.

He was recently spotted around 1:43 a.m. Saturday on surveillance video on the 1800 block of Lenape Road in Pocopson Township. It’s about 1.5 miles from the prison.

He was observed wearing pants, a white T-shirt and white sneakers, and he had a backpack.

Authorities believe that he’s been wearing prison-issued pants and prison-issued shorts underneath when he escaped on August 31. They do not know at this time where he obtained the backpack.

“His appearance has remained unchanged,” District Attorney Deb Ryan said during a Saturday press conference.

Police have responded to well over 100 tips from neighbors in the area, including allegations of possible break-ins to residential homes in the vicinity within a one to two-mile radius of the prison.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, one resident reported an attempted burglary on the 1000 block of Ballintree Lane in Pocopson Township. It’s still unclear if it was Cavalcante.

“We are requesting that residents in the area of Pocopson Township remain inside. Lock your doors, lock your cars. He is still considered an extremely dangerous individual. There is evidence to suggest that he’s still in that local residence. We do not believe he has gotten more than one to two miles away from the prison,” said Ryan.

“We believe we are getting closer to locating the suspect at this time, and we are narrowing the scope of our search,” Ryan added.

Convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante escaped the Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township, Pennsylvania.

The Stockbridge Library, Museum & Archives opens Homeland: Stockbridge-Munsee Artists’ exhibit featuring artists Rebecca Burr, Reva Fuhrman, and Terri O’Connor

Stockbridge— On Friday, September 8th, the Stockbridge Library, Museum & Archives opens “Homeland: Stockbridge-Munsee Artists” exhibit featuring artists Rebecca Burr, Reva Fuhrman, and Terri O’Connor.

Rebecca Burr is exhibiting her oil on canvas paintings. Burr’s work covers a variety of styles and subject matter. Commissions for home and office have included landscapes, abstracts, modern art, and Native American art. Burr is a member of the Mohican tribe and a self-taught artist since age 12. Growing up on the Red River in Wisconsin, which is where she lives today, she developed a personal connection with Mother Earth that resonates throughout her work. Inspiration for her mountain themes comes from the time when she lived in the Sierra Nevada Mountains where her son was born.

Reva Fuhrman, is an enrolled member of the Stockbridge Munsee Tribe, retired, and living on the Stockbridge Munsee reservation. Reva has been seriously beading for 23 years, first starting at age16. She is also part Iroquois and does the raised Iroquois beadwork as well as flat beadwork which was customary for the Mohican/Lenape people. She has studied beadwork from many tribes over the years. She creates her own base patterns and looks at images of historical beadwork and then creates her own rendition which is pleasing to her eye. Fuhman has several items in collections in the New York State Museum and also in Phillipse Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers, N.Y. She was chosen by the Wisconsin Arts Board to teach apprentices how to bead from 2016 – 2019.

Convicted escaped murderer spotted on security camera just a mile from Pa. prison

A convicted murderer was spotted on a security camera Saturday morning just 1.5 miles from the Pennsylvania prison he escaped from Thursday, officials said.

Danelo Cavalcante, 34, was seen on the camera at 12:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Lenape Road, not far from the Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township.

Police also received a report of an attempted burglary near the area in the 1000 block of Ballintree Lane in Pocopson Township at 11:30 p.m. Friday. It wasn’t clear whether the incident was related to Cavalcante, who has been on the run since he escaped from the prison at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

Cavalcante, who is from Brazil, was convicted of first-degree murder on Aug. 16 for fatally stabbing his 33-year-old former girlfriend and was sentenced to life in prison without parole last week, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said.

He is also wanted in connection with a 2017 murder in Brazil.

Cavalcante “is considered an extremely dangerous man,” and anyone who sees him should not approach him and call 911 immediately, District Attorney Deb Ryan said in a statement.

“Law enforcement is requesting that residents in the area remain indoors at this time,” Ryan said. “Lock your vehicles. Review your surveillance cameras and contact police if you observe anything suspicious.”

Cavalcante was seen on security video wearing a light-colored shirt, pants, white sneakers and a backpack. He has long, black curly hair, brown eyes, is 5 feet tall and weighs around 120 pounds, according to his “wanted” poster.

Hundreds of officers from local and state departments, the U.S. Marshals Service and SWAT are searching for Cavalcante.

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered…

Wayne National Forest Might Be Getting A New Name

Wayne National Forest, that lush green gem nestled in the heart of Appalachian Ohio, might be in for a bit of a makeover. A potential name change has got folks talking.

So, here’s the deal: Wayne National Forest got its name from General Anthony Wayne, a big-shot hero from the American Revolutionary War. But General Wayne’s legacy isn’t all parades and fireworks. His military achievements come with a side of controversy, particularly when it comes to his dealings with Native American communities during his campaigns.

Wayne was a significant figure in American history, but also a problematic one. He played a big part in various Revolutionary War battles, like the Battle of Brandywine in Philadelphia and the Battle of Monmouth.

Wayne National Forest in Ohio

But there’s more to General Wayne than his military prowess. His victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Maumee, Ohio paved the way for the Treaty of Greenville. That treaty saw tribes agree to give up most of what would become Ohio and parts of Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan to American colonists.

The general was known as “Mad Anthony”. And he made good on that name by burning down indigenous towns and crops on his way to British Fort Miami.

Folks who are pushing for this name change have a point. They say it’s high time we looked at our history through a different lens. By giving the forest a name that’s more in tune with its natural wonders and a nod to its Indigenous roots, we can show that we care about history, people, and the environment all at once.

Today, roughly 40 tribes have ancestral ties to Ohio. With the conversation around renaming…

Ribbon Cut on Williamstown’s Mohican Trail

image descriptionLocal and state officials cut the ribbon on the Mohican Trail in Williamstown on Thursday morning.image descriptionOne of the new signs marks the trail head near the corner of Syndicate Road and North Street (U.S. Route 7).image descriptionThe Western New England Greenway gave Williamstown two signs to designate its new multimodal trail as part of a network advocates envision from Canada to Connecticut.

Berkshire Bike Path Council President Margie Cohen speaks at Thursday’s ceremony.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — At the ribbon cutting for the new Mohican Trail on Thursday morning, the president of the Berkshire Bike Path Council remembered a time when not everyone believed such paths could be built.

“Twenty-three years ago, a small chorus of people started singing ‘Bike path, bike path, bike path,’ and everybody thought we were nuts … including Mayor Barrett,” Margie Cohen said, nodding to now state Rep. John Barrett III, one of several state and local dignitaries on hand for the ceremony.

“Twenty-three years later, the Berkshire Bike Path Council has over 400 members singing, loudly, ‘Bike path, bike path, bike path.’ Included in that chorus is all of our state and local officials and so many partners. … All the voices are coming together to encourage a path from Vermont to Connecticut.”

The 2.4-mile leg of that larger project was completed earlier this year by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, which turned over ownership of the trail from Syndicate Road to the Spruces Park to the Town of Williamstown.

Thursday’s ceremony was an opportunity for MassDOT officials and local representatives, along with community activists like Cohen, to celebrate the trail and recognize those who made it happen.
