Mohican Adventure Hunt to return to Loudonville

The Cleo Redd Fisher Museum. | facebook.com

LOUDONVILLE – The Mohican Adventure Hunt is slated to kick off on Saturday, June 11, at the Cleo Redd Fisher Museum in Loudonville.

The adventure hunt is a hybrid scavenger hunt that sends teams racing across the Mohican area to discover landmarks, find rare items and complete unusual – and often hilarious – tasks.

“It’s a bit like a mixture of a traditional  scavenger hunt and ‘The Amazing Race,’” said the museum’s curator, Kenny Libben. Each landmark, find or task is assigned a point value and teams must submit photographs or videos to prove they completed it. The first team to complete all tasks, or the team with the most points at the deadline, wins.

The hunt was first held last year with over 50 participants competing for the cash prize and bragging rights. Though no team completed the entire list last year, Team Atterholt took home the top prize by narrowly edging out others with 49 completed tasks.

“We weren’t quite sure how well the tasks would be received,” said Libben, “but by the end of the event it was obvious everyone loved it and begged us to bring it back.”

This year, the first-place team will win a $125 cash prize, and second place will go home with a $50 cash prize. The cost to register is $40 per team (vehicle), with a discounted registration for members of the museum. The event kicks off at 10 a.m., and teams have three hours to complete their list of tasks – after which everyone is encouraged to return to the museum to find out how they stacked up against the competition. There are 50 challenges on the list of  tasks, but what they are won’t be revealed until the starting bell rings for…

Visit to Al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria [EN/AR/KU]

Attachments

On Sunday 5 June, a high-level UN delegation, accompanied by the Chief of Iraq’s National Security Service, visited Al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria: a desolate, sprawling complex of tents in the scorching sun, and the forced home of tens of thousands of people for many years now. The delegation witnessed first-hand the dire conditions on the ground. This was just a glimpse of the immense challenges Al-Hol residents endure on a daily basis – despite the best efforts of humanitarian actors.

Many people, in particular children, never asked to be part of this desperate situation with no end in sight. However, 50 percent of Al-Hol’s total population (currently about 56,000 individuals) is under the age of 12. They find themselves deprived of their rights, vulnerable and marginalized. The already extremely precarious humanitarian and security conditions have deteriorated further in past months, making the risks associated with this slow-moving catastrophe ever clearer: a camp like Al-Hol fuels resentment and inspires terrorists, from breakout operations to large-scale attacks. If left unaddressed, the situation will inevitably impact the region and far beyond.

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert: “Keeping people in restricted and poor conditions ultimately creates greater protection and security risks than taking them back in a controlled manner. Iraq is demonstrating that responsible repatriations are possible, by finding dignified solutions anchored in the principles of both accountability and reintegration. The best and only durable solution is to control the situation, managing returns swiftly and decisively, in the spirit of partnership, to prevent the legacy of yesterday’s fight from fueling tomorrow’s conflict.”

The UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Imran Riza: “Al-Hol is no place for children. The steps taken by the Government of Iraq are extremely important in the path to solutions….

Together Well in the Lenape Forest Garden

Written by RuthAnn Purchase and Simon Purchase James

The Lenape Forest Garden at the Village of Fork Branch in Dover, Delaware is regeneration, reconnection, and decolonization in action.

In the Lenape Forest Garden, we are learning how to remove invasive species and reintroduce native species that provide food, medicine, and materials for traditional lifeways, creating networks of reciprocal relationships, known to some as guilds or companion plantings.

Last fall, John Heinz’s MobilizeGreen crew, the Appoquinimink High School Environmental Club and NPS Rivers, Trails & Conservation Assistance staff, and other volunteers joined us there for a work day.

The day began with the Haudenausee tradition of Ohenton Karihwatehkwen, known in English as Greetings to the Natural World, Words Before All Other Words, or Thanks Giving Address, during which everyone present honored the inhabitants of Mother Earth as teachers and elder relatives.

After a morning of work, the group settled down at the Sacred Story Circle, a space designed with Tribal Leaders to allow the stories of the 4 Directions to guide and rebalance our relationships.  Storytelling is usually reserved for the “Season of the Clacking Stones” when everyone in hibernation is striking stone against stone, making tools and baskets while waiting for the long nights and cold weather to pass.  That fall day, Chief White Otter Coker’s stories inspired the crew members to ask deeply thoughtful questions and commit themselves to planting native species everywhere they work.

Each plant guild around the Sacred Story Circle tells the stories of each direction.  White Flat Cedar greets us at the Eastern entrance, representing cleansing and new life; Evergreen Holly and Elderberry of the Northern guilds celebrate eternal life, wisdom, and healing. Designing the Lenape Forest Garden based on plants who grow together naturally helps us humans honor the families of plants who…

New exercise stations in Mohegan Park welcomed

Norwich — From now on, the phrase “getting exercise in Mohegan Park” can mean more than going for a walk, a bike ride or a summertime swim.

Norwich resident Stephen Tillman, a frequent walker in Mohegan Park Center, was surprised last Wednesday to find some shiny recent changes to his normal route. He went home to tell his wife, Celeste, and bring her down to see the seven new outdoor exercise stations in the park center, stretching from the beach parking lot to the arbor walkway.

“He came home and said, ‘I gotta show you something,’” Celeste Tillman said. “I thought he was going to show me some new ducks.”

They both tried a few machines, like ones they use at Planet Fitness and at the Rose City Senior Center. Both gave their approval.

For years, city Public Works Department Civil Engineer Jean-Paul Laguerre has wanted to bring to Norwich the type of adult outdoor exercise equipment he had seen at Washington Park in Groton. His plan was always thwarted by budget constraints.

The American Rescue Plan changed that. The city allocated $50,000 of its $14 million ARP grant to install seven weather-proof exercise stations along the walking path that leads from the beach parking lot to the park center. The department has spent $43,159 and may have enough money for one more station.

“I’ve always wanted to put one in Norwich,” Laguerre said, “and the plan is to keep going with it. With some money left over, I want to put in a kettle bell station. That’s very popular these days, with different weights. They’re not movable, so people couldn’t steal them.”

So far, Norwich has an ab toner, leg press, rower and a bench press, all with adjustable tension resistance, a sit-up bench, a two-person pull-up and dip station,…

Bandits rookie Tehoka Nanticoke finds the net at right time in Game 1 of NLL finals

After scoring one goal in his first three playoff games, rookie Tehoka Nanticoke said he knew he had more to give to the Buffalo Bandits in their pursuit of a National Lacrosse League championship.

In Saturday’s 15-14 victory against the Colorado Mammoth in Game 1 of the finals, Nanticoke tied his career high with five goals and added two assists, earning him second star of the game and the right to wear the Bandits’ heavyweight player of the game belt.

“He just looked more confident today and seemed like he was going to the net more often,” coach John Tavares said. “He was just playing his game … and today he didn’t hold back.”

He had four consecutive Bandits goals – their final two of the second quarter and their first two of the third quarter. Nanticoke helped Buffalo keep the lead despite Colorado’s relentless offense, as the Mammoth cut a 5-1 deficit at the start of the second quarter to 9-8 at halftime. His two goals in the opening 5:30 of the second half gave the Bandits an 11-8 lead.

Nanticoke didn’t score the game-winner. That credit went to Nick Weiss on a breakaway with 51 seconds remaining, but his performance was one of the biggest reasons the Bandits head to Colorado for Game 2 on Saturday with a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Nick Weiss' goal in final minute lifts Buffalo Bandits in Game 1 of National Lacrosse League finals

The Bandits are trying to win their fifth championship in franchise history and first since 2008.

“This was a game that I’ve dreamed of since I was holding a stick, wearing a JT (Tavares) jersey running around the back yard,” Nanticoke said.

Ramapough receive 285-year-old deed from descendants of Sloat family

Sloat family descendants return land use deed to Ramapough on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ.

Marsha A. Stoltz, NorthJersey.com

MAHWAH — A 285-year-old deed granting land use to members of the Sloat family was returned by its descendants to the Ramapough tribe in a symbolic ceremony at Ramapo College on Saturday.

Chief Dwaine Perry supervised the transfer of the deed between seventh generations before an audience of Ramapough and Sloat family members.

“We are grateful to the Rev. Jack Zamboni and his family for restoring our faith in the goodness of the American people as we received this unprecedented blessing of the original deed,” Perry said.

The deed was returned by Zamboni, a maternal descendant of the Sloat family who is an Episcopal priest living in Dunellen.  His son, Jonathan, transferred the deed to seventh generation Ramapough member D.J. Defreese.

“This return does not cure the atrocities of genocide, land theft and slavery that indigenous people of this land experienced, which can never be made right,” Zamboni said. “However, repair work can be done so that settler and indigenous nations may start to live freely together here and now.”

Drums and chants preceded a brief tobacco ceremony blessing the transfer. Members gathered briefly afterward for pictures…
