If there was one person who won all hearts with her exemplary performance in the Olympic gold medal game – it was Gabby Williams. In a contest that had neck-to-neck competition, Williams brought back the French time and again into the game. Seeing her performances, Chicago Sky star Angel Reese asked her if she would like to join the Chicago Sky. But Williams’s answer was sturdy since she had had her share of experiences while playing for the Sky from 2018-2021. Taking a look at their conversation on X, WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes has come to the fore to share her take.

Swoopes was present during the Queens of the Court podcast on Tuesday when she expressed her views on the entire Williams-Reese saga. And fans were excited to know how highly Swoopes thinks of Williams.

“I knew we’d get to Gabby later ’cause…. Yeah! I saw Dearica Hamby, Angel Reese reaching out like, ‘Gabby, wanna come back to Chicago? Dearica was like no but I asked first. Without question Gabby Williams needs to be in the league, she needs to go play somewhere. She’s beautiful to watch,” Swoopes stated via The Queens of the Court podcast.

Education emphasized at Nanticoke Indian Powwow

MILTON — The Nanticoke Indian Tribe’s heritage and culture will be showcased Sept. 7-8 with the 46th annual Powwow, a two-day spectacle that has an educational component.

“That is a huge part of the whole event. That is our point, to educate the public on our culture and our heritage,” said Nanticoke Tribe Chief Avery “Leaving Tracks” Johnson. “There are a lot of people that don’t know our history that are from other areas of the country. When they come here, they are on vacation, and they don’t even know that we exist.”

“So, it is a big educational opportunity for people of all ages.”

Native American crafts and food vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days of the powwow.

Admission fees are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 11-17 and free to children 10 and under.

The Nanticoke Tribe recently announced two Native American performers will be participating in the upcoming celebration at Hudson Fields.

Louis Campbell, whose Native American heritage is Lumbee/Blackfoot, will serve as the head male dancer, teaming with the Nanticoke Tribe’s Mike Harmon.

“He is very well known throughout the country and has performed at the largest powwow in the country, the Gathering of the Nations,” Chief Johnson said.

Angela Gladu, from the Cree heritage, will showcase her professional hip hop hoop and jingle dress dancing styles. The dancing performance will also feature Adrienne Harmon of the Nanticoke Tribe.

The host drums for the powwow are Red Blanket of New Jersey and Stoney Creek from North Carolina.

The opening ceremony Sept. 7 includes presentation of flags, grand entry and first dance session and will begin at noon. The second dance session is at 4:30 p.m.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — As of August 13, the following beaches, which were preemptively closed due to rainfall, will still remain closed due to samples collected on August 12 having elevated levels of bacteria, according to the Westchester County Board of Health:

Mamaroneck Beach & Yacht Club (Mamaroneck)
Harbor Island Beach (Mamaroneck)
Hudson Park West Beach (New Rochelle)

These beaches will be resampled on August 14.

In addition, the following beaches have been closed due to the presence of harmful algae blooms:

Mohegan Beach Park District Beach (Mohegan Lake)
Mohegan Colony Association Beach (Mohegan Lake)

The following beaches were reopened by the county, as of August 13:

Croton Point Beach Park (Croton-on-Hudson)
Rye Town Park Beach (Rye)
Rye Playland Beach (Rye)
Larchmont Manor Park (Larchmont)
Larchmont Shore Club (Larchmont)
Beach Point Club (Mamaroneck)
Orienta Beach Club (Mamaroneck)

Greentree Club (New Rochelle)
Surf Club (New Rochelle)

The county’s Beach Surveillance Program is designed to protect the public from illnesses associated with swimming in waters that are contaminated.

Heavy rainfall in the watershed of the Mamaroneck River impacts the water quality in Mamaroneck Harbor. Similarly, Echo Bay in New Rochelle is affected which impacts Hudson Park Beach and the Echo Bay Yacht Club.

Decisions to close beaches are based on the number of inches of rain in the watershed. Heavy rains and discharges from stormwater drains may result in high levels of harmful bacteria that may cause illness.

VIENNA — Each year, the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance (NWA) publishes a report card that evaluates the health of the river and gives it letter grades based on its overall health. These grades come from the information Nanticoke creekwatchers collect.

The Nanticoke Creekwatchers program relies on volunteers who regularly test the river’s water quality. They measure things like pH, oxygen levels, and water clarity at various sites from March to November.

These tests help the organization understand if there are too many nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, in the water. High levels can lead to too much algae.

When algae bloom, they reduce oxygen in the water and block sunlight, harming aquatic life and creating “dead zones” where fish and other organisms can’t survive. Also, some algal blooms are harmful, which can cause illness when contracted by pets or humans.

“It is important that NWA continues to work closely with our Nanticoke Creekwatchers program to keep a close eye on the health of the Nanticoke River,” a statement from the group said. “We must maintain the river to prevent dead zones and keep the river healthy.”

This year, the report shows:

Marshyhope Creek and the Delaware Headwaters earned a grade of B-, making them the healthiest areas.
The Lower Nanticoke also scored a B-, a positive improvement since 2015.
The Upper Nanticoke, Broad Creek, and Lower Creeks received C grades.
The Upper Nanticoke and Broad Creek had the lowest grades, continuing a concerning trend. However, there were some improvements:
Marshyhope Creek’s nitrogen grade improved from an F in 2022 to a D in 2023.
The Lower Nanticoke and Lower Creeks showed better results in phosphorus and chlorophyll levels.

As a voter registration effort aimed at Native Americans continues in Wisconsin, tribal members are talking about some of the issues they hope candidates will address this fall. And, about some of the ongoing barriers to voting.

A couple hundred Native people from around Wisconsin attended a tailgate party ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers game on Thursday. The nonpartisan group, Wisconsin Native Vote, sponsored the event, saying it wanted to do something fun to promote its ongoing get out the vote effort.

Also on hand was Shannon Holsey, who is president of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indian and chair of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council. Holsey said the tribes have had an interesting and complex relationship with the U.S. government, and she hopes candidates for federal office this fall will address some key issues.

“There are things —from being able to provide our citizens with affordable health care, access to good education, making sure we have stewarding of Mother Earth and making sure that those systematic barriers that exist with our federal government , we continue with tribal nations, as sovereigns, we continue to envelop those relationships and build those relationships,” Holsey told WUWM.

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Endofstory (Lazarus N) brushed to the lead past the quarter – and boom, endofstory. He won the $17,000 harness racing pacing feature at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania Tuesday (Aug. 13) in a lifetime best of 1:49.4.

The victorious sophomore gelding came after early leader I Was Tricked near the :27 quarter, hit the half in :55.3, held off first-over Girldad to the 1:23 three-quarters, then marched home in :26.4 to have 2½ lengths on that rival at the finish. Matt Kakaley handled the winning Yonkers shipper for trainer Doug Dilloian Jr. and owners David Linker, Brian Loman, Robert Venable, and Kyle Warren.
