Camden Catholic takes District 27

The Camden Catholic wrestling team won seven weights on the way to a convincing victory at the District 27 wrestling tournament.

John A. Lewis, Cherry Hill Courier-Post

CHERRY HILL – It was a long day – but in a good way – for Lenape’s Trey Friedman.

The Lenape junior made a return trip to the Al DiBartolomeo Gymnasium for the District 27 tournament.

To say the least, it went better than his last postseason visit.

“Last year we had regions – I was busting his chops before the beginning of this,” Lenape coach Chris Easlick said. “He went 0-1 at regions and only wrestled 23 seconds of it. This year was different. I’m very proud of him.”

Friedman ran afoul of Kurt Wehner of Toms River East, who only needed that long to pin him on the way to a third-place showing and a berth in the state tournament.

Saturday it was Friedman who was moving on – after topping the podium at 113 pounds at the NJSIAA District 27 wrestling championships at Cherry Hill High School East.

Friedman and senior 190-pounder Kevin Langlois won their weights for the Indians, who moved six wrestlers into next weekend’s Region 7 tournament at Moorestown High School and placed third in…

Empire proposes to resurrect Nanticoke industry dream with development

Empire Communities Inc. is proposing a massive development around Stelco's Nanticoke plant with purchased lands, outlined in red. The county would first require rezoning approval from the province, as it falls within provincially significant employment zon

Empire Communities Inc. has pitched Haldimand council with a Nanticoke development proposal that claims to transform the largest and least populated industrial park in the province into a community that would attract people and jobs.

The planner for the multinational developer approached council on Feb. 14 and said that Empire Communities purchased 1,700 hectares that surround Stelco, and with it wants to build a community, incorporating 15,000 residential units with commercial sites, a school and waterfront lands donated to the county.

The plan would start with building water and wastewater infrastructure, and the company proposed changes to the county’s water supply project, the decommissioning of current and future wastewater systems along Haldimand’s Highway 6 corridor and incorporating water and wastewater treatment into one main 75-megalitre-per-day plant. The size was approved in a 2011 environmental assessment.

It would cost $180 million. Currently, the county has $80 million planned for related projects, and Empire proposed to chip in to start up development.

Most of Empire Communities Inc.’s land falls within provincially significant employment lands, and the county has been asked to request provincial rezoning permissions to start development. They estimate proposed commercial sites would generate at least 7,000 jobs.

Both the mayor and several councillors voiced their support for the project, and directed staff to create a report on the feasibility of the project for its March 1 committee session.

Fines unami due to unannounced activation of route controls Belgium | Car

In many Belgian municipalities it is raining fines for speeding offenses due to the unannounced activation of section checks and the (simultaneous) removal of warning signs. One motorist has already received 11 fines.

Belgium is full of route checks. They are being installed at lightning speed, especially in Flanders. 225 section checks are planned, many of which have already been activated. The other checkpoints will be turned on in the coming months. In Wallonia, ‘only’ 25 section checks are planned, some of which have yet to be installed.

Although several new section checks were activated in recent weeks, the federal police failed to inform the municipalities. At the same time, the warning signs for section checks were also removed in many places by the Belgian Agency for Roads and Traffic. The result was a huge amount of fines in some regions.

Eleven fines

Many people were angry and frustrated that on average the fines did not arrive until two weeks later, so that the offenders were not immediately aware of their mistake. Several people have already received two or three fines for slightly exceeding the speed limit – 72 or 73 km/h where you can drive 70 km/h – but fear many more will follow. One motorist has already received eleven fines in the bus.

“Our goal is to make people drive slower, not to issue fines,” said the mayor of Kinrooi Jo Brouns to the Belgian newspaper. The newspapaer in a comment. “By silently activating the speed cameras and removing the warning signs, you only create frustration and misunderstanding. That is why the commissioning of a new speed camera or route control is always preceded by an information campaign.”

You can find the route checks in Flanders here. And…

MGE lauds the ‘ability to adapt’ after strong group-wide performance

Mohegan Sun

A strong group-wide performance, encompassing land-based establishments and online gaming, has led to Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment recording year-over-year improvements in net revenue and adjusted EBITDA.

This is aligned to the strong performance at the company’s owned and managed properties, as well as the addition of Mohegan Sun Casino Las Vegas and MGE Digital, compared to the prior period.

However, it is noted that 2020 was negatively impacted by various COVID-19 related restrictions, including the closure of the MGE Niagara Resorts for the entire period and Mohegan Sun Pocono for 20 days, in addition to state-mandated public health protocols at the operator’s other properties.

Net revenue through the quarter ending December 31, 2021, scored a 74.2 per cent increase to $402m (2020: $230.8m), with income from operations up to $35.2m (2020: $10.6m), net loss dropping 56.1 per cent to $11.7m (2020: $26.6m), and adjusted EBITDA rising 140.8 per cent to close at $97.4m.

When compared to the period ending December 31, 2019, net revenue and adjusted EBITDA increased 0.7 per cent and 29.7 per cent, respectively, which, MGE says, was largely driven by improved overall volumes and reductions in labour and marketing costs.

“Our consolidated adjusted EBITDA of $97.4m continues our trend of strong performance and demonstrates MGE’s ability to drive profitability,” said Raymond Pineault, CEO of MGE.

“In addition, following the successful completion of financing in November 2021, we are very pleased to announce that MGE has recommenced construction of Inspire Korea.”

Revenue at the company’s flagship Mohegan Sun facility in Connecticut, during a time frame that was said to reflect “normal operating conditions compared to…
