VFW Post 9943 honors past commanders and presidents

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States at Mohican Post 9943 held a banquet to honor past presidents and commanders who have served throughout the long history of the organization on Sunday afternoon.

The vision of the VFW Post 9943 is to bring needed services, information and assistance to veterans and service members, their families, and communities.

There have been 38 past commanders and 42 past presidents throughout the history of Post 9943. .

The five past commanders who were present Sunday afternoon were Bill Myers, the current Post 9943 commander, Daniel Reed (1967-68), John Kemplin (1998-99), Billy Walker (2003-04) and Murray Konves (2018-22).

Seven of the past presidents were in attendance, that included current president Susan Hale, along with Ginny Fisher (1998-99), Laura Walker (2002-04), Joyce Sparks (2006-07, 2008-11, 2015-20), Rita Scheurer (2007-08, 2013-15), Margaret Strong (2011-13), Kim Reed (2020-21) and Dawn Tackett (2020-21).

Two Men’s Auxiliary members were present in Gearold Smith (2006-07) and Brad Strong (2010-13).

The keynote speaker was Myers himself, who spoke on learning from the past and applying it to today.

“Never forget the past,” Myers said in the beginning of his talk.

Past commander Billy Walker and past president Joyce Sparks spoke on what this occasion means to them to be able to gather with former presidents and commanders.

“I was district commander for two years. I served in Vietnam in 1970-71 and I was in the military eight years before I got out,” said Walker. “This place has a lot of history and good people. It’s an honor to be here with these people. It made me a better man than I used to be.”

“This is something we used to do every year. It kind of got pushed to the side and because of Covid we were unable to pick up a lot of stuff,” said Sparks. “Bill suggested…

Mashantucket-Mohegan Fund grants would more than double in 2025-26

Apr. 24—Municipalities’ share of the gaming revenues the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes pay the state would more than double under a bill advanced last week by the legislature’s Appropriations Committee.

The panel voted unanimously to increase the amount transferred annually from the state’s General Fund to the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Fund ― starting with the 2025-26 fiscal year ― to $139,380,000. The money comes from the state’s 25% share of the slot-machine revenue the tribes’ respective casinos ― Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun ― generate.

In recent years, the fund has plateaued at $51.5 million.

The increase endorsed by the Appropriations Committee as part of Raised Bill No. 1213 would restore the fund to its highest level since the 1999-2000 fiscal year, when $135 million was distributed to the state’s 169 cities and towns in the form of grants.

“We’ve been trying to build it back to what it was originally intended to be,” state Sen. Cathy Osten, the Sprague Democrat who co-chairs the committee, said of the fund. “By 2025-26, most towns will have used up their ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds, and the increase in the grants will help bridge the gap.”

Osten has sought to increase the grants since before the state’s 2021 legalization of online casino gaming and sports betting, forms of gambling that have generated additional revenues for the tribes and the state.

The ARPA grants were intended to offset economic losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both of the casino-owning tribes expressed support for the bill bolstering the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Fund.

“With new revenues from sports betting and internet gaming coming in above and beyond projections, now is the time to restore the fund to its previous levels in recognition that our employee base hails from almost every city and town in the state and that our vendor…

Holy Spirit girls varsity eight wins at Flicks in Philly

Most parents will have waged battles with their children over eating fruit and vegetables. But instead of sitting and watching a little one push their plate away or refuse to touch a food they don’t like, researchers have now reported that the key to getting kids to eat “significantly” more is getting them to stay at the dining table for longer.

The Holy Spirit High School girls varsity eight won Sunday at the fifth and final Manny Flick-Horvat Series regatta of the season in Philadelphia.

The girls varsity-eight category had two races, and the Spartans finished in 5 minutes, 13.92 seconds in race A, the fastest time of the division. Radnor was second in the race in 5:18.28, Gwynedd Mercy Academy finished third in 5:19.67 and Atlantic City fourth in 5:27.80.

The Holy Spirit crew included bow Alexandra Solari, Ava Buccafurni, Gwen Amalfitano, Peyton Ballard, Allie Lee, Taya Anderson, Olivia Bencze, stroke Chloe Cooke and coxswain Sara LaVigna.

Mount St. Joseph won the other girls varsity-eight race in 5:18.49. Mainland Regional was third in 5:36.32.

Egg Harbor Township won the girls lightweight four race in 6:13.11. The Eagles’ lineup consisted of stroke Lily Winkler, Mollie Ireland, Izzy Patel, bow Gianna Middleton and coxswain Talia DeNafo. Ocean City finished second in 6:17.87.

The Ocean City girls team had two winners. The O.C. freshman eight won race A of its division in 5:50.47. The O.C. crew: stroke Addison Guest, Victoria Sakhno, Madison Hart, Romi Yakita, Borana Bixha, Kalyn Baron, Jada Smith, bow Erin Loughran and coxswain Addison Bradshaw.

Mount St. Joseph was first in race B of the category in 5:24.21 and Mainland Regional was third in 5:43.23.

Ocean City won a 14-boat head race in the girls novice-four division in 6:17.86. Absegami was second in 6:26.32. The Red Raiders’ crew included…

Southwind Dredge wins Series final; Weiss filles impress

April 24, 2023, by PHHA for The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono

Wilkes-Barre, PA – On a Monday (April 24) afternoon at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania where horses racing up front did not do too well late, the best illustration of that concept came in the $20,000 Championship of the Game Of Pacing Claims Series for $10,000-base claimers, where Southwind Dredge was last at every call but the most important one, thundering by his field to reach the wire first in 1:54.2.

The favored Globaldomination N went to the lead and set a moderate pace, but watching the far turn it was evident that much of the power was out very wide on that bend. Southwind Dredge was widest of all, five-deep as they swung for home, and he was full of pace to defeat Riot, who also closed well but not as well as the winning son of Bettor’s Delight, by a length. Tyler Buter drove the winner for trainer Jason Brewer and owner Barry Franklin.

Southwind Dredge sweeps from last to first in the stretch to win his Game Of Claims Championship. Curtis Salonick photo.

C Is For Cookie completed a sweep of her three preliminaries in her Weiss Series division for pacing fillies with a 1:52.2 success in her $20,000 division for trainer Linda Toscano and Birnam Wood Farms. The Betting Line filly, out of the dam of Sweet Lou and Bettors Sweet, has been a push-button horse for driver Scott Zeron, responding to requests for a bit more with long and powerful strides.

Relentless Julie tried to equal C Is For Cookie as a Weiss prelim sweeper, but Lodestar beat her out by…
