Local roundup: Wyoming Area softball scores five in 7th to earn walk-off win

Down by four runs heading into the bottom of the seventh, Wyoming Area softball rallied for five runs in the final frame to earn a walk-off 6-5 win over Dunmore on Saturday in a non-conference matchup.

Alexa Gasek shined for the Warriors, finishing with a home run and four RBI at the plate while going the distance in the circle for the win, striking out six and allowing one earned run on three hits.

Gasek, Anna Wisnewski and Kayla Leo all finished with two hits apiece for the Warriors, who trailed 4-0 after the top of the first and 5-1 after six.

Elk Lake 12, Nanticoke Area 1

Elk Lake had seven extra-base hits as the Warriors won in five innings.

Megan Johns led Elk Lake with a home run and four RBI.

Mckenzie Stratton had Nanticoke Area’s only RBI.

Tunkhannock 13, Parkland 1

Sydney Huff was 4-for-4 with a triple, double and six RBI as Tunkhannock defeated host Parkland in five innings.

Paige Marabell and Erin Van Ness were each 3-for-3 with two RBI. Marabell also had a double. McKenzie Hannon doubled and had two RBI.

BASEBALL

Crestwood 3, Nanticoke Area 1

Ben Keil struck out nine and Chaz Wright was 4-for-4 as Crestwood won a non-league game.

Wright, Joe Moritori and Evyn Makowski each had an RBI for the Comets. Keil allowed four hits over six innings. Robert Duffy threw the final inning to get the save.

Brandon Wozniak doubled and Jay Shemanski singled and had an RBI for Nanticoke Area.

Dunmore 6, Wyoming Area 3

Wyoming Area jumped an early lead on Jack Mathis’ three-run homer in the first inning, but Dunmore rallied for the non-conference victory.

Sen. Baker, Rep. Ryncavage open new offices in Nanticoke

Apr. 21—NANTICOKE — Sen. Lisa Baker on Thursday said a crucial part of public service is meeting face-to-face with constituents, listening to what they have to say and alerting them to state programs and services that may assist in improving their personal situation.

Baker, R-Lehman Township, Rep. Alec Ryncavage, R-Plymouth, announced they will host a joint open house at their district offices on Friday, April 28, from noon to 4 p.m., at 50 North Walnut St., Suites 105 (Baker) and 102 (Ryncavage), in Nanticoke.

The lawmakers are opening offices in a new downtown building at 50 N. Walnut St., constructed for Nockley Family Pharmacy and Cawley Physical Therapy and Rehab.

“For people who want to talk about issues, this joint open house allows them to gain perspective from both the Senate and state House,” Baker said. “We receive input and information from a wide variety of sources, but community conversation still gives the most helpful insight.”

Ryncavage said that as a new legislator he is grateful that he and a seasoned senator like Baker will be in close proximity to one another as they help their constituents.

“Our neighboring offices create a one-stop shop for our residents,” Ryncavage said. “The building and ample off-street parking make our space accessible, welcoming and convenient for those needing legislative services.”

The offices of Baker and Ryncavage can assist residents with PennDOT paperwork, driver’s license and vehicle registration applications and renewals; information and applications for senior citizen benefit programs, including Property Tax/Rent Rebate and PACE/PACENET prescription drug programs; securing birth and death certificates (photo identification required); organizing tours of the state Capitol; copies of legislation; and many other services.

Pennsbury Manor Evokes Native American History with nkwiluntàmën Exhibit

A historic manor in Bucks County is hosting an artistic exhibit that celebrates the rich history of the area and its first inhabitants. Peter Crimmins wrote about the exhibit for WHYY.

Pennsbury Manor, William Penn’s historic estate in Morrisville, has commissioned artist and Lenape descendant Nathan Young for an exhibit that evokes Lenni Lenape history. The exhibit is called “nkwiluntàmën: I long for it; I am lonesome for it (such as the sound of a drum).”

Young has installed noise and avant-garde music at the historic house, which is administered by the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission. This aids in reflecting  the noisy history of the Lenape people.

“This is my own personal opinion, but a lot of land acknowledgments seem to be just lip service,” said Young. “But here at Pennsbury Manor, by letting me do things like this and other things that Pennsbury has done for the recognized Delaware tribes – what they do matters. It’s not just lip service.”

The artist has installed several speakers on high-backed garden benches around the residence. Each of these plays music created by several composers for the piece. In addition many large signs are painted white, black, yellow, and red. The goal is to help guide visitors on a poetic journey.

Saturday night’s fashion show at First Americans Museum will feature Native American designers and traditional and contemporary designs as it celebrates Indigenous fashion.

The Lenape Fashion Summit’s Teton Trade Cloth is designed to reflect the beauty and culture of Native America and emphasize the importance of preserving and promoting Native American culture and traditions, a news release noted. It begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Teton Trade Cloth store is owned by the Delaware Tribe of Indians; the tribal headquarters are in Bartlesville. Its Lenape Fashion Summit has become a platform for showcasing the rich culture and diversity of Native American fashion, the release stated.

Featured designers at the event include Designs by Della; Michelle Luna – Bitterwater for Redhouse; Sheel Designs; Marian Mike – Breezy Designs; Queena Ribbon Designs; Kathleen Tom Garcia; JG Indie; Stitched by Millie; Native Springflower Creations; Bonnie Woodie; and Penny Singer. Accessory designers include Shude Victors – Big Smoke Maker Designs; Shaydee Snow Pretends Eagle – S.N.O. Inc.; and Amanda Wilson – Weryackwe Tie Co.

The entire fashion summit includes the Teton Artist Market from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, where the designers will feature their works for sale at booths. The museum also is offering a beginning ribbon skirt class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and an advanced ribbon skirt class from 2 to 4 p.m. that afternoon.

The 14th annual Putnam City Cancer Classic run/walk will be Saturday, with proceeds benefiting cancer research at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

Copperheads, blister fungus and more tales of Camp Mohican history

LOUDONVILLE − Camp Mohican, the local installment of more than 1,500 setups of what became known as “Roosevelt’s Tree Army,” the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), left a lasting legacy to the area during the Great Depression, and was instrumental in making the nascent Mohican State Park into one of the most visited in Ohio.

Kenny Libben, curator of the Cleo Redd Fisher Museum, spoke Monday on that legacy in the closing 2022-23 entry in the Mohican Historical Society’s speaker series.

In an hour-long talk before about 80 jammed into the museum meeting room, Libben traced the operations of Camp Mohican from its opening in June 1933 to its eventual closing in April 1942, when the U.S. government decided to disband the remnants of the CCC and concentrate on the effort to fight World War II.

The CCC was a child of the Depression, one of the promises Franklin D. Roosevelt made in his successful 1932 election campaign.

As part of the New Deal, Roosevelt took the CCC he had formed while governor in New York and applied it nationally. In New York, the CCC worked on outdoor projects involving reforestation and infrastructure in state parks and wilderness areas.

His CCC idea involved more than 1,500 camps set up nationwide, with approximately 200 workers in each.

“In an era of mass unemployment where Americans commonly went two or three days without a meal, thousands of workers were attracted,” Libben said, “to the promise of $30 a month wage, shelter, clothing, and three square meals a day.”

Camp Mohican was selected as a CCC camp location as part of a newly designated Ohio State Park. The state, Libben said, bought up about 500 acres near Clear Fork Gorge in 1928 as a future…

Felony assault charges withdrawn against Nanticoke man

WILKES-BARRE — A Nanticoke man accused of aiming a handgun at a Nanticoke police officer and a child caseworker with Luzerne County Children & Youth Services and placing a handgun in the mouth of a woman pled guilty to misdemeanor charges Monday.

Cory Ma Gonzalez Crudop, 40, of State Street, stood accused of hiding in the basement of a residence at 64 Hill St., as three Nanticoke police officers assisted two caseworkers from Children & Youth Services inspecting the home on July 14, according to court records.

When an officer opened a door, Crudop was accused of aiming a firearm at the officer before fleeing the house where he aimed the firearm at a caseworker, according to court records.

The incident prompted a massive police search of the Lower Broadway area of Nanticoke that ended in Crudop’s apprehension at his residence.

Child caseworkers were at the house two days after Crudop on July 12 placed the barrel of a handgun in the mouth of a woman during a domestic dispute and threw a car battery through the windshield of a vehicle that a child occupied, court records say.

Crudop was scheduled for trial this week.

Instead, prosecutors amended the felony grading of two counts of aggravated assault to misdemeanor simple assault in a negotiated plea agreement with Crudop and his attorney, Frank McCabe, involving the police officer and child caseworker.

Crudop pled guilty to four total counts of simple assault and a single count of terroristic threats, all misdemeanors, before President Judge Michael T. Vough.

A felony count of aggravated assault involving the placing of a gun in the woman’s mouth was withdrawn.

Crudop is scheduled to be sentenced June…

Cowlitz Tribe Takes Over Mohegan To Run ilani Casino In Washington

After six years of working together to run ilani Casino Resort in Washington, just north of Vancouver, the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Connecticut-based Mohegan Tribe will end their partnership next year.

The Cowlitz Tribe enlisted the help of the Mohegan Tribe to launch and manage the casino starting in 2017. And, now, in July 2024, the Cowlitze Tribe will assume full management of the property.

According to an article by The Columbian, Cowlitz Indian Tribe Chairwoman Patty Kinswa-Gaiser said in a statement:

“After careful consideration, the Cowlitz Tribal Gaming Authority has recommended, and the Cowlitz Tribal Council has approved, a decision to begin a multi-step process of transitioning ilani from an enterprise managed by the Mohegan Tribe to a self-managed enterprise.”

What’s ahead for ilani Casino in Washington?

According to the Cowlitz tribe, not much will change over the next 15 months. Mohegan will continue to provide management services for the occasion. ilani leadership and staff will stay in place.

Next year, Cowlitz will take over management of the casino. Kinswa-Gaiser said that the transition to self-management of the casino is a natural part of the process. The Mohegan Tribe showed the Cowlitz the casino management ropes. Over the past six years, the Cowlitz has eased into shared management responsibilities.

And, as was the plan, the tribe will overtake total control of the casino’s management. The two tribes will continue their partnership in other partnerships and initiatives, although the Cowlitz gave no specifics. Kinswa Gaiser continued:

“We are forever grateful for the remarkable success and benefits this partnership has brought our tribal members and the Cowlitz community since ilani opened its doors in 2017. We raise our hands to the Mohegan Tribe and will continue the standard of excellence they brought to ilani.”
