EDITORIAL: For Native American Heritage Month, Start with Awareness but Go Beyond

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time for appreciating, recognizing and paying tribute to the Indigenous people whose land this country was wrongfully founded on.

The history of the relationship between Native Americans and the European settlers who landed on their shores has been notoriously white-washed. Over time, many attempts have been made to erase not only their plight at the hands of the settlers but also their contributions to America’s progress.

Despite the inextricable relevance of Indigenous presences in America, many people know next to nothing about the history of the specific tribes who live in their region.

The Lenape people, also known as the Delaware Tribe, lived and still do live in the area that now encompasses New Jersey, Delaware and parts of Pennsylvania and New York. But when colonists began to arrive in the early 17th century, the Lenape were tricked out of their land by white settlers and forced to leave their homes, ending up displaced thousands of miles away in an allocated area of Kansas. Despite this, almost all of the eligible Delaware men voluntarily enlisted in the Union effort during the Civil War, even as white trespassers stole from them and unlawfully occupied their land.

This is obviously admirable, but Native Americans should not need to be heroes to be celebrated and acknowledged. It is enough that they were here first, as sovereign nations, and still they have not been given the attention or respect they deserve.

Montclair State University has a somewhat turbulent history when it comes to its relationship with Native American heritage and culture. During the 1930s, Montclair State’s athletic logo was changed from a simple red “M” to a stereotypical profile of a Native American chief, and the team name was changed in…

Land acknowledgments are becoming customary at educational gatherings. As the participants introduce themselves they acknowledge the tribal people who once occupied the lands where they now live. The first time I encountered this practice I was just relieved that I could answer: The land where I live was home to the Lenape, Native Americans whose lands once ranged from present-day Massachusetts to the state of Delaware. But I felt pretty shallow doing it. I empathized with the spirit of the exercise, but in practice, it felt perfunctory and disconnected.

Then this past summer I participated in a seminar organized by PUSH Buffalo, to learn about grassroots strategies for revitalizing neighborhoods and reclaiming, renovating and repurposing older structures to create healthy housing and vibrant public spaces.

This time, the land acknowledgment introduced a presentation by three local historians who delivered a vivid history lesson, covering the colonial-era displacement of Native Americans to the creation of the racially and ethnically segregated city. From the siting of polluting industries in poor neighborhoods to the use of eminent domain to take land for projects that benefited private enterprises rather than the public good. From the impacts of redlining—the systematic denial of financing to minority home buyers—to gentrification efforts that have priced moderate-income residents out of their neighborhoods.

In this context, the tribal land acknowledgment was necessary to a broader understanding of the…

Perdue Farms awards Chesapeake Conservancy with $100,000 donation

The Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Perdue Farms, has awarded Chesapeake Conservancy, a Maryland-based environmental non-profit, with a donation of $100,000 to help fund construction of an outdoor natural amphitheater at the new Oyster House Park in Seaford, Del., at the site of the old J.B. Robinson Oyster House along the Seaford River Walk on the Nanticoke River.

The Perdue gift is part of the company’s “Delivering Hope To Our Neighbors” initiative focused on improving quality of life and building strong communities.

“We are so grateful to the Perdue Foundation for supporting this vision,” said Randall Larrimore, Chesapeake Conservancy board chair. “To construct the Oyster House Park, we partnered with the city and others to provide public access to the Nanticoke River, one of the Chesapeake’s most pristine rivers, and worked together to create a beautiful place for the community to gather and recreate. Thanks to the generosity of Perdue, one day we will also enjoy a performance at a new outdoor natural amphitheater. We believe we are helping to build a stronger community and a vibrant downtown.”

The outdoor natural amphitheater will be built into the slope of the property accented with native plants. There will be seating for 75 people in the amphitheater and room on the lawn for an additional 200 people. This will also serve as a community outdoor classroom, gathering space for performances and erosion control to address runoff from steep banks. The city plans to remove the impervious road surface and support best management practice implementation to reduce runoff from nearby streets. New turnarounds will allow access to the property and support maximum available open space for pedestrian access.

“At Perdue Farms, we are proud to support the Chesapeake Conservancy and City of Seaford’s vision to…

A change of heart

US casino giant Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment has officially withdrawn its plans to develop and operate a casino in Greece. Instead, the company intends to increase its focus on the Asian market.

the new backdrop created by the COVID-19 global pandemic”

The company announced that it had backed out of the plans on Friday last week. It cited “the new backdrop created by the COVID-19 global pandemic” as a reason for the withdrawal. The business also said that it intends to focus on its $1.6bn Inspire Korea project in Seoul, which it expects to open in Q2 2023.

Early last year, the Hellenic Gaming Commission (HGC) selected Mohegan to develop the Hellinikon casino project in Athens. Mohegan agreed to pay €150m ($173.5m) in casino licensing fees to secure rights to the Inspire Athens project, with plans for a gaming area, a 120,000 square-meter hotel, entertainment venues, retail shops, and dining amenities.

Back to the drawing board

When the application process began for the planned €8bn ($9.3bn) casino resort in Greece, four operators expressed their interest. This included Mohegan, Hard Rock International, Caesars Entertainment, and the Genting Group. By the end of the bidding period, only Mohegan and Hard Rock remained.

Now that Mohegan has pulled the plug on its Greek plans, the door may have opened for Hard Rock once more. However, the company took issue with the HGC after it awarded the 30-year license to its only rival bidder last year. Hard Rock ultimately pursued legal action, pointing…

UN Mission condemns assassination attempt on Iraq PM ‘in the strongest terms’

GENEVA — The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has condemned “in the strongest terms” the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, following a drone attack overnight on Sunday, aimed on his house in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

According to news reports, the exploding drone caused damage to the residence and several of the Prime Minister’s security guards were injured in the attack. Al-Kadhimi, was sworn into office in May last year.

The Green Zone houses government offices and many foreign embassies. No group has so far claimed any responsibility for the attack and remains from the explosive-laden drone have been recovered, as part of an on-going investigation.

“The Mission expresses its relief that the Prime Minister was not hurt in the drone attack,” said the UNAMI statement.

No place for terrorism, violence

“Terrorism, violence and unlawful acts must not be allowed to undermine Iraq’s stability and derail its democratic process,” it continued.

The attack has been condemned by both the government of Iran, and the United States.

On Friday, protests outside the Green Zone, against the results of the last month’s parliamentary elections turned violent, as demonstrators clashed with security forces, reportedly accusing Iraq’s political elite of rigging the vote.

One protester was reportedly killed, and dozens of security personnel were injured. The prime minister has ordered an investigation into what led to the violence.

Turnout for the election was low, with just 41 percent turning out to vote, and supporters of pro-Iranian parties and militias, lost ground, according to preliminary results.

Protesters are reportedly calling for the government, and Iraq’s independent electoral commission, to hold a recount.

Call for restraint

The UN Mission joined the prime minister, in calling for “calm and urging restraint” in the coming days following the assassination attempt.

“Moreover, UNAMI strongly encourages all sides to take responsibility for de-escalation and to engage in dialogue to…
