Here Is What To Know About Philadelphia's History

Philadelphia, aka Philly, is the 6th largest populous city in the USA. It is where the first notion of the American Revolution appeared due to the meeting of the Nation’s Forefathers. Throughout the centuries, Philadelphia has always been one of the most significant places in America, and it still is.

Origin of Philadelphia

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the place was native land for the Lenape Indians. They are the native Indian tribes who eventually became the first nation’s band government. Also known as Delaware Indians, they were pushed out of their homelands as European settlement increased.

However, it was later in 1981 that William got the royal charter as partial repayment of the loan from Charles II of England. At that time, he decided to leave the charter and bought the land from the local Lenape to maintain a healthy relationship with the native. Later he signed a peaceful friendship treaty with the Lenape Indians and Named the place Philadelphia, which means Brotherly Love in Greek.

Things You Don’t Know About Philadelphia

  • In 1946, Philadelphia was the home of the world’s first computer.
  • The only long-ship restaurant can be found in Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia.
  • America’s first zoo was founded in Philadelphia.
  • In the health sector, Philadelphia is extremely rich, as one out of every six doctors in America is trained in Philadelphia.
  • Philadelphia has over 2,000 murals on its street, making it the “Mural Capital of the USA.”

What Are the Perks of a Personal Injury Law Firm in Philadelphia?

Philly is a place of first. It is one of the most significant places in America, with a significant number of Law firms all over the state. The laws and…

Higher valuation ups insurance coverage for Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — A higher valuation of the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza will drive up insurance premiums, the authority that owns the facility learned Wednesday.

The arena, that opened in November 1999, increased in value to $87.6 million from $79 million last year, representatives of Assured Partners in Plains Township informed board members of the Luzerne County Convention Center during their public meeting at the facility.

Premiums likewise increased to $192,795, up from $179,696 under the existing liability coverage that expires in two days, and a separate active shooter/active assailant policy could further raise insurance costs between $14,000 and $15,000. The board approved renewing the policies at the higher cost, but asked Assured Partners to look into higher deductibles that could reduce premiums and pay for the additional policy.

The board dealt with another financial matter that will cost it approximately $70,000.

Michael Vind of Financial Solutions, the authority’s financial adviser, explained the mechanics of amending a loan to comply with a new rate index to go into effect after June 30, 2023.

“The authority has one piece of debt outstanding in the amount of $21.45 million . It matures in 2035,” Vind said. It carries an interest rate of 3.23% through FNB, he added.

In preparation for the switch to the Secured Overnight Financing Rate from the London Interbank Offered Rate the loan documents have to be changed to reflect the switch.

FNB agreed to continue the existing rate, Vind noted.

“From a debt service perspective it’s going to be neutral. We think this is very good outcome,” Vind said.

Vind recommended the board pay the cost out-of-pocket to amend the loan. The alternative of amortizing the cost…

Greater Nanticoke Area hires two new school police officers

Superintendent Ron Grevera attended Thursday’s Greater Nanticoke Area School Board meeting virtually via the laptop computer opened in front of his empty chair.

Mark Guydish | Times Leader

NANTICOKE — The Greater Nanticoke Area monthly School Board meeting Thursday opened with a noticeable absence: Superintendent Ron Grevera’s chair was empty, though a laptop computer sat open with the screen facing the chair. Board Vice-President Ken James announced that Grevera was attending remotely while staying in COVID-19 isolation.

James headed the meeting because Board President Tony Prushinski was absent, along with Mark O’Connor. Grevera noted that attending remotely maintained his record of attending every School Board meeting, then gave a quick report, noting the first day of School will be Sept. 6, and that kindergarten students and their families will spend the first three days getting familiar with the school and teachers, then start the first kindergarten class on Sept. 9.

Grevera also said teachers will spend the first two days of September getting to know new safety protocols and undergoing some “trauma-informed training.

And Grevera noted that, with the board voting to hire two new school officers that evening, the district will have three full-time officers on the campus every day. During the voting session, the board voted unanimously to hire Brian Stashak and Christopher Wegrzynowicz as school police officers at $46,000 each for the 2022-23 school year, and rescinded the contract with Joseph Nalepa as school police officer. After the meeting Grevera said the new hires both were trained at the Pennsylvania State…

Delaware District 3 surrenders lead late to fall in World Series

The Delaware District 3 team certainly must have been having a case of déjà vu last Sunday, Aug. 7, when they battled it out with Southwest (District 9, Waco, Texas) in the Senior League Softball World Series championship final on Layton Field at the Lower Sussex Little League Complex at the Pyle Center in Roxana.

The local contingent jumped out to a 3-0 lead and seemed to be playing with much confidence, especially with one of the largest crowds the tournament has seen in all the years it has been played in Roxana. Kinsley Hall was mowing the Southwest hitters down, and her defense was flawless behind her.

Until that one fateful inning… again.

Just like in their loss to Southwest in pool play on Tuesday, Aug. 5, Delaware District 3 somehow lost the momentum, and thereby the game, when the team from Texas had their bats come alive. Southwest collected six of their eight hits in the game during their 9-run 6th inning, with the biggest blow coming from K. Alonzo as she ripped a pitch deep over the left-centerfield fence for a grand-slam home run and a 9-3 Southwest lead.

The girls from District 3 were stunned. The many fans from all over the area — many from Delaware and Maryland — were speechless. Collectively, they could not believe it had happened again.

“We knew they were a good team and could hit the ball well,” said District 3 head coach Sarah Hoban. “This was a seven-inning game, and six of those innings I was really proud of the way they played,” she said of her team. “Just that one inning… This whole World Series, we had two bad innings — both against this team — and we’re just gonna try to hold onto the good innings, the good memories.

“They played hard…
