Kolbe Cathedral’s Pfohl attempting to win state titles in four decades

When he steps on the floor at the Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday afternoon, John Pfohl will have coached in a state championship in his fourth different decade.

With a win against No. 3 seed Hand on Saturday in the Division III state final, top seed Kolbe Cathedral will have won a state title in those four different decades under Pfohl, who won titles in 1999, 2004 and 2018. The first two were at Central Connecticut State University’s Kaiser Hall, the last one at Mohegan.

“The first time I went, it was a completely new experience. I reached out to some coaching friends of mind who had been there before to know what to expect at Central,” Pfohl said. “It has now become an event, the entire experience, From walking into the Mohegan Sun to the locker rooms, to underneath the tunnel coming out into the arena is something you need to experience. It’s awesome.”

This is Pfohl’s seventh state championship game in two tours of duty with the Cougars. The first one was from 1993-2008. He returned for the 2017-18 season and won the Division IV title over Rocky Hill that season. Pfohl won his 400th game in the quarterfinals on Monday.

“Our goal, quite frankly, is to be practicing on the last day of the season. Whenever that is, we want to be practicing,” Pfohl said. “We understand the tradition and try to continue it.”

Pfohl said he never played in a state championship game himself. But his counterpart on Saturday has.

Jimmy Economopoulos is coaching in his first state championship game at Hand. In 2008, he was a junior…

Historic cliffside steps reopen at Minnewaska State Park Preserve

The State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC) have announced the reopening of historic cliffside steps at Sam’s Point area of Minnewaska State Park Preserve after a three-year rebuilding project.

The Lenape Steps were constructed originally in the 1860s by Thomas Botsford, who subsequently built a hotel nearby against the base of the escarpment. After the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1874, the steps remained in use, but gradually fell into disrepair from damage caused by water, freezing temperatures and thawing.

“Having the Lenape Steps restored to their former glory represents another improvement to one of the Hudson Valley’s premier recreational attractions,” said State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid. “This gives visitors a now much-safer way to reach Sam’s Point, the highest point on the Shawangunk Ridge with its panoramic vistas.”

Restoration of the stairs was the result of a three-year project by about 50 volunteers from the Jolly Rovers, a Hudson Valley group specializing in the building of natural stone pathways in difficult to reach areas.

“The Commission was very pleased to partner with the Jolly Rovers to support the restoration of the Lenape Steps,” said Palisades Interstate Parks Commission (PIPC) Executive Director Joshua Laird. “This project brings back a historic feature that has helped visitors reach Sam’s Point, the highest point on the Shawangunk Ridge, for over 150 years. We salute the Rovers for their dedication and hard work that helps us keep important park trails and stonework in good shape for the future.”

Starting in July 2019, volunteer crews from the Jolly Rovers primarily using hand tools cut, shaped, and set about 100 stone steps made from nearby boulders. More…

Hard work on display at Mohican District Science Day at Ashland University

ASHLAND – Many observers of the science fair projects on display Saturday at Ashland University’s John C. Myers Convocation Center were impressed by the amount of work and variety of informational reports on display.

More: How the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people, businesses and downtowns two years later

Kathy Tollett, a middle school science teacher at St. Jude’s in Elyria, was at her first district science fair. She was truly surprised by the quality of projects

“It is really interesting to see the progression through the grades, and how their graphics, and the all-around improvement in their projects as they get older,” she said.

61st annual Mohican District Science Day at Ashland University

A total of 132 students from 16 area schools in the Mohican District Science Day took part in  the 60th annual Science Day, sponsored by the Mohican District Junior Division of the Ohio Academy of Science.

According to Jeff Weidenhamer, the Science Day director and a professor of chemistry at AU, the number of participants this year was about half of what it had pre-pandemic, but he was glad to be hosting a live event after two year away.

“Our last face-to-face fair was in 2019,” Weidenhamer said. “It’s going well. We expect it’s going to take some time for schools to get science fairs going again, but we thought it was important to build enthusiasm for science.

“Kids have the opportunity to present their work and talk to judges,” the director continued. “The work that goes into these projects is top notch and the students do some high-quality work.”

Time and hard work on display

The Kellerman family from Medina was at their first fair in support of their daughter, sixth-grader Clarissa from St. Francis Xavier in Medina.

“This is our first time at a district level event, and the projects…

The difference was simple: Capital Prep just too good

UNCASVILLE — You can bat around the X’s and O’s if you want. You can point to nerves and focus on the outstanding play of Abby Hurlbert (28 points, 10 rebounds) and a very competitive second half. It all has its place. Heck, you can even throw in the “no death certificate, no foul” demeanor of the game.

But Capital Prep’s 84-55 victory over Thomaston before 4,486 fans for the Class S girls basketball state title Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena can be reduced to this: bigger, faster, stronger and much better. Simple? Yes. Too simple? Not hardly.

The No. 3 Bears (23-3) knew all about Capital’s numbers — the 65-point average margin of victory in the tournament, the 47-point average margin of victory in the regular season, the only two losses coming to New York City teams, the state’s No. 1 ranking.

Yet, they believed, like any champion would. Then they found that Capital might even be better than all the well-deserved hype. They found out Capital has no respect for the movie “Hoosiers” and doesn’t really believe that David ever laid a glove on Goliath, let alone a stone from a sling.

The Bears packed the pride of a champion and a rock solid belief that they could handle this challenge. They practiced against the boys, they tried to prepare for the size and quickness that the regular season didn’t offer. In the end, it just wasn’t the real thing. Capital Prep was.

“No doubt they are a machine,” said Thomaston coach Bob McMahon. “They are more finely tuned than we had hoped. They are more skilled than I realized. They are relentless on the boards. And I said before the game that the more threes they shoot, the better for…

Historic stone steps at Sam’s Point open

Sam’s Point

CRAGSMOOR – The historic cliffside steps at Sam’s Point Area of Minnewaska State Park Preserve have been reopening after a three-year rebuilding project.

The Lenape Steps, at the base of the Shawangunk Ridge in Cragsmoor, date back to the 1860s, when early hotel owner Thomas Botsford built them in a narrow chasm for guests to reach the top of the ridge.

The stairs remained a popular tourism attraction after the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1874 but had been in a state of disrepair for many decades.

“This gives visitors a now much-safer way to reach Sam’s Point, the highest point on the Shawangunk Ridge with its panoramic vistas,” said State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid.

Restoration of the stairs was the result of a project by about 50 volunteers from the Jolly Rovers, a Hudson Valley group specializing in the building of natural stone pathways in difficult to reach areas.

Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan called Sam’s Point “a real treasure.”

Starting in July 2019, volunteer crews from the Jolly Rovers primarily using hand tools cut, shaped, and set about 100 stone steps made from nearby boulders.

More than 7,000 man-hours were devoted to the work.

The Palisades Interstate Park Commission provided $32,000 to support the project and the Jolly Rovers raised over $4,200.

The Lenape Steps are the latest project at Minnewaska to involve the Jolly Rovers, whose members have also worked on the stairway that leads to the base of Stony Kill Falls and the staircase that connects Rainbow Falls to the Upper Awosting Carriage Road Trail, as well as the stairway connecting the nearby Mohonk Preserve further north on the ridge.

The group has also been involved…

BUSINESS MONDAY: Momma Lo’s Southern Style BBQ

Great Barrington – If you happened to motor through Craryville during the past two and a half years, you may have glimpsed plumes of smoke rising like Mohican signals into the skies above Random Harvest and Zinnia’s Dinette, formerly The Dutch Treat. Driving closer, you may then have been drawn to the pothole-pitted parking lot and a few makeshift tents, where eponymous proprietress Loretta “Momma Lo” McClennan and her sons “T” and “Buddha” (Attarilm and Ahmed) were gamely preparing feasts of Tennessee-infused barbecue.

One such passerby was Richard Stanley, impresario of the Triplex Cinema and other businesses in Great Barrington, who stopped there on his way to a golfing expedition. Upon sampling the maximally authentic wares of this roadside pop-up, and fully cognizant of South County’s utter dearth of BBQ options, Stanley exclaimed to Momma Lo that she and her sons ought to be in Great Barrington, offering their artful, hand-crafted food to a wider population, and from more commodious digs. Stanley told The Edge that besides appreciating the quality of the food, he was motivated by a desire to make Great Barrington more inclusive. “I want to create business opportunities here for all kinds of entrepreneurs.”

Flash-forward a year or two, and here they are in the Triplex plaza, standing resplendent in their cheerfully appointed new storefront, formerly home to STEAM, a pan-Asian noodle bar, which moved into the former Tangier site on Main Street.

$4.6 Million in Federal Funds Awarded for Lake Lenape Dam Project

$4.6 Million in Federal Funds Awarded for Lake Lenape Dam Project

Atlantic County and Hamilton Township recently received confirmation of a $4.6 million federal funding award for the $6 million Lake Lenape Dam Rehabilitation and Spillway Reconstruction project in Hamilton Township.

“Congressman Jeff Van Drew strongly supports our efforts and recommended this project for federal funding,” explained County Executive Dennis Levinson. “The improvements will stabilize the dam and reduce the risk of flooding for approximately 100 properties.”

$178 million in funding from the federal government’s $1.5 trillion spending bill has been approved for community projects in New Jersey. The Lake Lenape Dam project is one of seven such projects approved in Atlantic County.

“This is a tremendous win for Atlantic County that will reduce the costs for our taxpayers. Without Jeff Van Drew it would not have been possible,” Levinson said. “We are extremely grateful for his assistance.”

The project includes renovations to the dam’s powerhouse and the reconstruction of the spillway as well as improvements to the embankments.

“The announcement that federal funding will be used to complete these projects is great news for Atlantic County and Hamilton Township, and I am proud to have worked diligently in securing this funding,” said Congressman Van Drew. “I look forward to seeing the completion of the Lake Lenape Dam and the vast improvements this funding will provide to Atlantic County.”

The dam was built in the mid-1800s and used by a cotton mill until it closed in 1940. The dam was acquired by Hamilton Township in 1978 and several years later the county became a co-owner to share the financial burden with the township.

Construction is scheduled to begin next spring and be completed in two years.
