Column: Canoeing down the Mohican River to Goon Fest 2025

The kid was probably 11 years old, red hair and even redder skin scorched by a lack of sunscreen, as he floated on his rented yellow kayak.

“You having fun?” I asked in dad mode, as I saw no parent or guardian in any direction.

“I lost my group. They wanted to stop for drinks and I got stuck on a rock and couldn’t move for 20 minutes,” he said.

“You can use my phone and call your parents or whoever,” I offered.

“My mom don’t got her cell and I don’t know her boyfriend’s number.”

Hard to tell whatever happened to that child, but we left him on a campground bank and had to proceed, as our mission was Goon Fest.

Located just north of Brinkhaven on the Mohican River, Goon Fest 2025 was a three-day, two-night music and camping festival centered around jam band, folk and psychedelic rock.

Sure, that sounds like a hundred other festivals, but Goon Fest was different in that there was more community, relaxation and room to separate from the masses but still be connected, all while refreshing your mind through the chords and drums humming through the tree canopies.

Too much hippie nonsense for some of you readers? OK, let’s switch to freedom and bald eagles and Ohio State football along the river.

South of Loudonville, across from the Mohican State Park main entrance and sharing the parking lot with the mountain bike trail access point, is the Paddling River Access boat ramp. The plan was to make way in my 17-foot aluminum canoe and travel south along the always-oxbowing mighty Mohican 11 to 13 miles to the festival.

Berwick Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Julia Rauch and Grace Robbins

After flying high against Greater Nanticoke Area on Wednesday, Berwick came back down to earth. The Bulldogs fell just short of the Central Mountain Wildcats by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. If the Bulldogs were looking for revenge after losing 3-0 to the Wildcats when the teams met back in September of 2024, then they’ll just have to keep looking.

Berwick took Central Mountain into a fifth set but they suffered a heartbreaking four-point loss. The match finished with set scores of 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 15-11.

Berwick’s loss shouldn’t obscure the performances of Grace Robbins, who had 24 kills, ten digs, and three blocks, and Julia Rauch, who had six blocks and five digs. Robbins has been hot for a while, having posted five or more kills the last nine times she’s played. Angie Colone was another key player, getting 14 kills, seven digs, and one block.

Having lost for the first time this season, Berwick fell to 2-1. As for Central Mountain, they have started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Berwick will venture away from home to face off against Lake-Lehman at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Central Mountain, they are packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will challenge Hughesville at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all attendees for your commitment and leadership in confronting this critical issue, and for your continued support in advancing Iraq’s national response.

Today, we convene to discuss the serious challenge of drug use and trafficking. This issue is of utmost significance for Iraq’s stability, public health, and the protection of its youth – the foundation of the country’s future.

In recent years, Iraq has moved from being primarily a transit country to becoming a country of consumption, with thousands of cases recorded annually, most affecting young people.

We commend the efforts of the Government of Iraq, particularly the Ministry of Health, for preparing the report on the Drug use situation in Iraq and development of the National Protocol for the management of substance use disorders, launching the community awareness guideline and establishing specialized centers such as Al-Qanaa Rehabilitation Center – located on the site of the former Canal Hotel, where several of our UN colleagues lost their lives 22 years ago. Transforming the site of this tragic event into a rehabilitation center and witnessing the launch of these reports from this very location is a significant tribute to the victims of this tragic incident.

Bacteria levels prompt boil water advisory for Hagersville village, Nanticoke steelworks

Grand Erie Public Health has issued a boil water advisory for a village near Hagersville and an industrial section of Nanticoke that includes part of Stelco’s Lake Erie steelworks.

“Public  health has been advised of water samples that indicate the presence of  bacteria in the water,” the health unit said in a statement on Thursday.

The advisory covers White Oaks Village and the Nanticoke Business Park.

The  health unit recommends all affected water users switch to bottled water  or boil tap water for at least one minute before consuming for any  purpose, including drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, cooking or  preparing infant formula and juice.

White Oaks Village is a  123-acre property on Army Camp Road, southwest of Hagersville. During  the Second World War, the area was the site of a Royal Canadian Air  Force training school. Some of the military housing still standing when  the camp closed in the 1960s formed the basis of the present village.

More recently, the property has been beset by flooding, leaking waterlines, and disputes with the county over unpaid taxes and water bills.

The  health unit told The Spectator the boil water advisory also includes  the Hagersville Airport and Business Park beside White Oaks Village, and  the surrounding businesses.

Nanticoke  Business Park refers to businesses on Hawk Street and Field Road in  Nanticoke, plus some nearby businesses on Highway 3, the health unit  said.

The advisory includes a Stelco pickle line on Hawk Street, part of the steelmaker’s Lake Erie Works.

In total, 20 businesses and 36 homes are affected by the advisory, the health unit said.

Restroom ‘alleged’ trespasser wants to withdraw guilty plea

WILKES-BARRE — A criminal case thought to be resolved may get new legs.

Robert Kowaleski, 39, through his attorney, Scott K. Hampton, filed a motion seeking to withdraw his guilty plea to charges of defiant trespass and criminal attempt to commit indecent assault. Kowaleski was sentenced July 17 by Luzerne County Judge Micheal T. Vough to six-to-23 months at the county correctional facility.

The charges filed by Nanticoke police alleged Kowaleski followed two women separate times into a restroom inside Weis Market at Weis Plaza on Dec. 29, 2024, and propositioned a female employee at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Nanticoke to join him in a restroom for sexual relations, according to court records.

In the motion requesting to withdraw his guilty plea, Kowaleski claims his earlier admittance of guilt was not voluntarily made. Kowaleski claimed in his motion he was “asking” the women for their consent to provide sexual favors as it says in the criminal complaint.

When Kowaleski was sentenced, he was ordered to register his address for 15 years under the state’s Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act.

After the sentencing hearing, Assistant District Attorney Rachel Spivack on Aug. 25 filed a motion to vacate Kowaleski’s sentence and have him resentenced to include being deemed a sexually violent predator based on an evaluation from the state’s Sexual Offender Assessment Board.

The report from the Sexual Offender Assessment Board was not available when Kowaleski was sentenced July 17.

“…it is this board member’s professional opinion within a reasonable degree of professional certainty that Mr. Kowaleski does meet the criteria to be classified as a Sexually Violent Predator under Pennsylvania Law,” according to the SOAB report.

While the report says Kowaleski meets the criteria as a violent sexual predator, the decision is made by a Court of Common Pleas judge.
