$4.6 Million in Federal Funds Awarded for Lake Lenape Dam Project

$4.6 Million in Federal Funds Awarded for Lake Lenape Dam Project

Atlantic County and Hamilton Township recently received confirmation of a $4.6 million federal funding award for the $6 million Lake Lenape Dam Rehabilitation and Spillway Reconstruction project in Hamilton Township.

“Congressman Jeff Van Drew strongly supports our efforts and recommended this project for federal funding,” explained County Executive Dennis Levinson. “The improvements will stabilize the dam and reduce the risk of flooding for approximately 100 properties.”

$178 million in funding from the federal government’s $1.5 trillion spending bill has been approved for community projects in New Jersey. The Lake Lenape Dam project is one of seven such projects approved in Atlantic County.

“This is a tremendous win for Atlantic County that will reduce the costs for our taxpayers. Without Jeff Van Drew it would not have been possible,” Levinson said. “We are extremely grateful for his assistance.”

The project includes renovations to the dam’s powerhouse and the reconstruction of the spillway as well as improvements to the embankments.

“The announcement that federal funding will be used to complete these projects is great news for Atlantic County and Hamilton Township, and I am proud to have worked diligently in securing this funding,” said Congressman Van Drew. “I look forward to seeing the completion of the Lake Lenape Dam and the vast improvements this funding will provide to Atlantic County.”

The dam was built in the mid-1800s and used by a cotton mill until it closed in 1940. The dam was acquired by Hamilton Township in 1978 and several years later the county became a co-owner to share the financial burden with the township.

Construction is scheduled to begin next spring and be completed in two years.

2022 CIAC Boys Basketball State Championship Capsules

Division I

WHEN: Sunday, 8:15 p.m.

ON THE AIR/WEB: NFHS Network (subscription required)

HOW THEY GOT HERE: Notre Dame: Bye; def. Danbury 83-53; def. Notre Dame-Fairfield 77-47; def. Windsor 60-57; East Catholic: Bye; def Farmington 57-46; def. Wilbur Cross 73-63; def. Fairfield Prep 47-40.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: Notre Dame is 0-3, last appearing in 2003. East Catholic is 6-7, last playing, and winning, in 2019.

KEY PLAYERS: East Catholic: James Jones, 6-4, Jr., G; Luke Reilly, 6-2, Jr., G; Allyn Wright, 5-11, So., G; Notre Dame: Mekhi Conner, 6-0, Jr., G; Timaury Gay, 6-4, Jr., G; Andrew Lazarre, 6-1, Sr.

OUTLOOK: East Catholic is playing its best basketball of the season at the most opportune time. The Eagles have gotten solid play from Jones, Wright and Reilly among others on both ends of the floor. They will need to be even better on Sunday. They will need to control tempo, shoot it well from the 3-point line and rebound. Notre Dame had to come from behind in the final minutes to beat Windsor in the semifinals. The Green Knights are going to try and speed up the game with their full-court pressure, spearheaded by Conner and Lazarre. If they can get up by double digits, it’s going to be hard for East Catholic to come back from that.

MORELLI’S PICK: Notre Dame.

‘Providing a platform’: Palm Springs International Dance Festival aims to educate, connect

Over a decade ago, Michael Nickerson-Rossi traveled from his then-home of Long Beach to Palm Springs with some friends. By the end of the trip, he’d fallen for the city and its vibrant, artistic feel, but there was one big thing missing: a professional dance company.

“I saw these beautiful works of art, from landscaping to architecture to fine arts, but there was no dance. And I was kind of surprised by that, because we’re so close to Los Angeles,” he said. “And I wanted to bring it.”

Now, Nickerson-Rossi Dance is a professional contemporary dance company consisting of seven full-time members. Under that umbrella, there’s also the Palm Springs Dance Academy and the Palm Springs International Dance Festival, the latter of which takes the stage this weekend.

The festival includes nine days of programming ranging from a ballroom social to a student showcase, and each event purposefully features dancers across a variety of genres to introduce guests to artforms they may be unfamiliar with.

The Desert Sun caught up with Nickerson-Rossi and a few of his colleagues to learn what events they’re most excited for at this year’s festival.

Indigenous Dance Residency Performance

The festival kicks off with an evening of three postmodern dance pieces by Julenda Satow Freeman, a card-holding member of the Delaware Tribe of Indians (Lenni Lenape) and the Cherokee Nation. Freeman choreographed these works during a week-long residency at Nickerson-Rossi Dance Theater, during which she learned new ways to tell her family’s story through movement.

This is the dance company’s inaugural Indigenous Dance Residency, which is something Nickerson-Rossi has wanted to do for years to honor the tribal land that checkerboards Palm Springs. He got one step closer in 2021 when the company partnered with the Cahuilla Band of Indians to present a modern bird song dance during a Modernism Week home…

Dispelling the Myth of Manhattan

Details By Jenna Kunze March 25, 2022

NEW YORK—The Myth of Manhattan goes like this: Dutch settlers, arriving in 1626 on the island called Manahatta by its Lenape residents, believed they struck a deal with the Natives. For $24 worth of beads and trinkets, the Dutch believed they “purchased” the island, and soon built walls on the southern tip of the island—now Wall Street—to keep them out.

On Thursday, Brooklyn Public Library hosted a panel to dispel the myth of Manhattan with the co-founders of the nonprofit Lenape Center, Joe Baker (Lenape, Delaware Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma) and Hadrien Coumans (an adopted member of the Lenape WhiteTurkey-Fugate family). The panel was moderated by playwright and attorney Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee Nation).

“It just plain couldn’t have happened for two reasons,” Nagle said in a video about the myth streamed during the remote event. “First, the Lenape had no concept of land ownership.” In other words, they did not believe that one could possess the earth to sell in the first place.

“And second,” Nagle continued, “the Dutch had struck the deal with Lenape men who didn’t have the authority. In Lenapehoking (Lenape land), it was the women who made the big decisions.”

What Baker calls the “tenacious myth” circulating for the past 400 years covers the truth of his own origin story and how his family—who can trace their ancestral homelands directly to the center of what has become one of the most iconic cities in the world—ended up on a reservation in Oklahoma.

After the Dutch slowly pushed out the Lenape people, European settlers and eventually the U.S. government continued to push the Lenape people—who…

June O. ‘Bugs’ Burton, 88

June O. “Bugs” Burton, 88, departed this life peacefully on March 12, 2022, in Wilmington, Del. She was born on Sept. 4, 1933, in Millsboro, Del., daughter to the late Eunice P. Harmon and late Travanian (Buddie) Wright. She had a half-sister, the late Derinda Morris, and a half-brother Travis “Poo” Johnson. She grew up in Millsboro, and believed there was no better place to live and raise a family.

She attended the Nanticoke Indian School, where she completed schooling through the eighth grade. She subsequently left school, like many people of her heritage during that time, to help care for her family. She became a devoted housekeeper, both inside and outside the Harmon household. She quickly learned the truth behind the saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” as she indeed became stronger.

Burton worked for more than 35 years at Atlantic Sands Hotel in Rehoboth Beach, Del., and worked her way from being a housekeeper to the supervisor of the entire Atlantic Sands cleaning staff. Additionally, she had the responsibility of maintaining and cleaning the homes of the Atlantic Sands’ owners — yes, she was that good. She always worked hard and was known for her reliable work ethic.

Even without a formal education, she was a problem solver who excelled at everything, which included taking care of her loved ones. She was a creative homemaker with a unique eye for decorating and unparalleled cooking skills. She accepted Christ into her life and walked with Jesus as an active member of the Indian Mission United Methodist Church and was a lifelong member of the Nanticoke Indian Association. Her Native American name, given to her on June 9, 1990, was Lonesome Wolf.

Burton married Harry “Clayie” Burton, the love of her life, on June 3, 1954, in Salisbury, Md. During that…
