The Bristol Press – UConn women postpone Marquette matchup due to COVID problems

Journal Inquirer

COVID-19 has made its first impact on the UConn women’s basketball team’s 2021-22 schedule.

The Big East announced Sunday that the 11th-ranked Huskies’ conference game with Marquette slated for Wednesday at the XL Center in Hartford will not be played due to COVID issues within the Marquette program.

Per the Big East game cancellation policy, the conference office will attempt to reschedule the game in accordance with the policy.

UConn (6-3, 1-0 Big East) has not played since its 69-64 loss to Louisville in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena on Dec. 19. Marquette (9-3, 2-1) defeated Cincinnati 60-49 in Milwaukee on Wednesday.

A season ago, the Huskies had their appearances in the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge and the 2020 Jimmy V Women’s Classic canceled after a member of their program (not a player or a coach) tested positive. They also had a non-conference showdown at Baylor and conference games against Villanova and at Providence canceled because of issues at their opponents’ schools. In March, UConn coach Geno Auriemma — who was fully vaccinated — tested positive and missed the Huskies’ opening NCAA tournament games in San Antonio with High Point and Syracuse.

The Huskies’ next game is now scheduled for Friday at DePaul.

UConn announced that season ticket holders will retain access to their seats for any rescheduled contest. If a canceled game is unable to be rescheduled, UConn athletics will credit the account of a season ticket holder at the conclusion of the season. Fans who purchased a three-game mini-plan or single-game ticket to a canceled game, can utilize their same game ticket(s) for the rescheduled game.

Munsee retires with mission accomplished

CLARION – On Jan. 4, for the first time in almost 40 years, Rex Munsee will not be carrying a badge. When Sheriff-elect Shawn Zerfoss is sworn in, Munsee will be a civilian.

“I guess I got my love of law enforcement from my great-grandfather. Back in the 1930s, he was a special deputy for Erie County,” Munsee said.

That love of the law continues with Munsee’s children – his daughter is a Clarion attorney and his son followed in his father’s footsteps as a Pennsylvania State Police trooper.

Munsee began his career in law enforcement as a state trooper and rose to the rank of corporal. He served one year at the Punxsutawney barracks, and the balance of his 27-year state police career in Shippenville.

“As a trooper I couldn’t be political, but the day after I retired I announced that I was a candidate for Clarion County sheriff,” he said. It’s a post in which he has served three terms.

“It’s time to go,” he said. “I accomplished all that I wanted to do. It is time for someone else to step in. I am not regretting my decision not to run.”

Munsee said his greatest accomplishment was to “re-invigorate” the employees.

“It seemed the office had shrunk,” he said. “We were only doing court security and prisoner transports. Now we do more public relations things. We do speeches, public programs and we do security at various events. We also support the PSP at some events.

“We aren’t the lead agency, but perform a supporting role. We also serve warrants for the magistrates. I think more people are aware of the department now.”

One of the changes Munsee has seen over the years is the lack of applicants for the position of deputy.

“The pool of potential deputies has shriveled up,” he said. “When I…

ONA Local District Offers Annual Scholarship to Marion Tech Nursing Student

(Marion) During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a critical need for nurses. In response, a professional nursing group is sponsoring a $400 annual scholarship to help a nursing student make it to graduation.

Mohican District 5 of the Ohio Nurses Association, a state professional nursing group, donated $2,400 to the Marion Technical College Foundation to create this new scholarship fund.

“The Mohican District 5 wanted to extend our support to future nurses in completing their education,” said Carolyn Kaple, treasurer for the group.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a senior nursing student at Marion Tech. The student must live in Ashland, Crawford, Marion, Morrow or Richland Counties. The student must be in the good standing in the nursing program, have at least a 3.0 grade point average, and submit a letter of recommendation from a nursing instructor.

“This will help a talented, qualified student with financial need make it to graduation,” said Cindy Hartman, director of the nursing program at Marion Tech. “We value the support of this professional nursing group in helping our nursing students succeed.”

The Marion Tech Foundation asks for scholarship applications and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) each year by May 1 and awards the scholarships for the following fall semester.

“The Mohican District 5 provided an initial donation of $2,400 to this scholarship fund and it may be supplemented by supportive members of the community,” Kaple said.

This generous gift is gratefully received by the Marion Tech Foundation.

“It’s a hallmark of belief in our students to support their education,” said Mike Stuckey, director of the Marion Tech Foundation. “Kaple is a past Marion Tech nursing instructor and believes in our program and our students.”

Openings for registered nurses are expected…

Cape Cod’s Squaw Island prompts debate over cultural reclamation, interpretation of words

HYANNISPORT — For centuries, the lush, green spit of Hyannisport marshland has been locally called Squaw Island, with legends surrounding a “squaw,” or a Wampanoag woman, who waited on the island for her husband to return from war.

But U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland recently designated the word “squaw” a racial slur and has moved to ban the word from federal lands. Haaland, an enrolled citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna Native American tribe in New Mexico, is the first Native American to hold a Cabinet post.

Along with Haaland’s designation is the creation of a task force that will evaluate 650 locations and rename streams, valleys, lakes, creeks, street signs and parks across the country that contain the word “squaw,” including Squaw Island in Hyannisport.

But Camille Madison, of the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project in Mashpee, said the designation is a call to “look back on history,” and “reconnect to the origins of the Algonquian language.”

“Squaw is a word or what’s called a morpheme — a meaningful morphological unit of a language. It refers to the female character of a woman and it’s used to create words that mean woman, or little girl, or good girl,” said Madison, who is a member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). “I want to respect that people feel offended by the use of that word. Western tribal people didn’t know that this is a morpheme in our language. But what does that say to us as Algonquian people? This (Haaland’s designation) contributes and perpetuates our erasure. That’s a part of my sacred language. That’s who I am.”

‘This news is so welcome’: Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe can retain reservation land

About 12 tribal nations throughout the Eastern Woodlands territory of the indigenous people of North America use the sound or morpheme “squaw” as part of the Algonquian language family, according to Madison.
