Marsha Carrol Stricker Stanish

Marsha Carrol Stricker Stanish, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 30, 2021, at the Gardens at East Mountain, Wilkes-Barre. She went to be with the Lord at the age of 78.

She was born May 3, 1943, in Wilkes-Barre, and was the daughter of the late Dr. Robert S. Stricker and the former Martha Arner. She was married to the love of her life, John F. Stanish, who preceded her in death.

Marsha was a lifetime member of The Episcopal Church of St. Clement & St. Peter, Wilkes-Barre, where she enjoyed singing with the choir. She was a member and former Past Matron of The Order of the Eastern Star Wyoming, Chapter 1. She was a former Avon representative and sold for almost 40 years. She made many lifelong friends and enjoyed seeing and spending time with them. She graduated from E.L. Meyers High School, Class of 1962, and she enjoyed meeting with her graduating class for luncheons on a regular basis.

She loved her animals, crafting and was an avid gardener. You would always find her out in the yard planting her flowers or taking care of her vegetable garden. She loved spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marsha was preceded in death by her grandson, Justin R. Phillips, Nanticoke.

She is survived by her children, Lisa A. Phillips and her husband, Mark Phillips, Nanticoke; Liz Hossage, Wilkes-Barre; Jessica Stanish, Wilkes Barre; and John R. Stanish and his wife, Lora, Swoyersville; her grandchildren, Joshua, Doreen, Andy, Scarlet; great-grandchildren, Emma, Dylan and Ava; and brother, Robert B. Stricker Shickshinny.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kniffen O’Malley Leffler Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre.

Sun shut down Aces again to clinch playoff berth

Aug. 25—MOHEGAN — It was news to Connecticut Sun head coach Curt Miller when he found out over an hour before Tuesday night’s game that his team would clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Las Vegas Aces.

Miller said he wasn’t going to tell his team.

He lied.

“Trust me, he made us aware,” the Sun’s DeWanna Bonner said with a grin. “We were like, ‘OK, we just want to win.'”

The Sun went out and once again got the league’s highest-scoring team stuck in mud. They won 76-62 in a battle between first-place teams to sweep the three-game regular-season series with the Aces before 4,012 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Connecticut (18-6) its sixth straight game, a season high. It was also the third time this season it held Las Vegas under 70 points. The latter had averaged a league-high 90.5 points.

“So proud of our effort, our tenacity, our toughness tonight against an elite team,” Miller said. “They play at the fastest pace. They’re the league-leaders in points in the paint You name it, offensively, analytically, they’re the best in the league. And they have great depth.

“For us to hold them again in the 60s is just a credit to how hard we play (defensively).”

Connecticut also took sole control of first place after the Minnesota Lynx knocked off the defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm 76-70. The Sun has a one-game lead over both teams with eight games to go.

Seattle swept the Sun this season.

Bonner scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half along with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals for Connecticut.

Briann January had the hot hand in the first half for the Sun. She scored 12 of her season-high 19 in that half and added three steals.

Man, 65, dies after vehicle gets trapped amid flooding in Milford Twp.

MILFORD TWP., Pa. – A 65-year-old man died after he drove his vehicle into flood waters in Bucks County Wednesday as the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought heavy rains to the region.

Donald Allen Bauer, of Perkiomenville, was found dead in the vehicle around 6 a.m. Thursday, according to a state police news release.

Troopers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Trumbauersville Road in Milford Township around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a missing person from a vehicle that had driven into the flood waters of Unami Creek, state police said.

Arriving troopers and fire department personnel tried to retrieve the vehicle. However, the conditions were too severe, and crews postponed the search efforts at 11:30 pm. Wednesday, state police said.

A 54-year-old woman, also of Perkiomenville, was able to get out of the vehicle and was transported to St. Luke’s Upper Bucks campus, state police said.

Troopers and fire department personnel returned to the scene Thursday around 6 a.m. and found Bauer dead inside the vehicle, according to state police.

Bauer was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bucks County Coroner’s Office shortly after 10 a.m. The cause of death was ruled as drowning, and the manner of death was ruled accidental.

The Associated Press says more than two dozen people’s deaths in the Northeast have been linked to flooding.

Three storm-related deaths were reported in Montgomery County. A tree fell into a woman’s house in Upper Dublin Township, killing her. Two other people drowned, one in a home and the other in a car in the county.

Emergency workers in the area completed more than 450 water rescues and rescue efforts were continuing in the morning.

Seven storm-related deaths were reported in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Outlook: Tom Kelly is the Braves’ third coach in three seasons. Frank Fucetola left the Braves prior to the 2020 season after over two decades with the program, the best years coming at the end of his tenure where Williamstown established itself as one of the best teams in the state.

Long-time offensive coordinator Pat Gallagher took over for one season, going 7-2, and now the job falls to another former Williamstown assistant in Kelly.

A strong senior class graduated but there’s still plenty of talent left, including Villanova commit Turner Inge, who will lead the Braves from the offensive and defensive backfields. Inge was the leading rusher with 545 yards and nine scores.

Williamstown is a two-time defending sectional champion and finished last year strong to vault into the Top 20 at season’s end. It will be challenged out of the blocks, especially with a matchup at St. Augustine in Week 2.

Greater Nanticoke Area scoreboard to be dedicated in memory of Distasio

Sep. 1—NANTICOKE — To get a real understanding of how people in the Greater Nanticoke Area School District felt about the late legendary football Coach Dan Distasio, you need to go no further than the John S. Fine High School Alumni Facebook page.

There you will read comment after comment of praise, respect admiration and love for the coach/teacher/mentor of so many that walked the halls and toiled on the gridiron at Nanticoke Area.

“I wish I would have known him better,” wrote Dave Morgan on the Facebook page. “I never heard anything other than praise from all that were in his classroom, or on the field. Outstanding individual and so appreciative of his family for their donation in his name.”

So on Friday, the Trojan football team will play their first home game against Lake Lehman. At that game, the brand new scoreboard — donated by the Distasio family —will be dedicated in memory of Daniel J. Distasio, who died in 2006 at the age of 73.

The scoreboard was donated by Distasio’s family: his wife, the former Gert Piepon; children Debbie DiSabatino, Dan Distasio Jr., Jeff Distasio and Steve Distasio; his 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Another Facebook post by Ann Marie Coughlin, said Distasio “was a mentor to many, whether it was on the football field, in the classroom, or just a friend. The fact is, Distasio had a positive impact on many students and people.”

State Sen. John Yudichak is a graduate of Greater Nanticoke Area.

“Dan Distasio was a mentor, a coach, and an educator to every student who walked the hallways of Greater Nanticoke Area,” Yudichak said. “I had the great pleasure to have Mr. Distasio as a social studies teacher. He got the best out of every student whether it was in the classroom, or on the athletic field.

Full lineup of Shaboo All-Stars back for ‘Jazz at Sunset’ concert at Hanover Theatre

WORCESTER — D.A. “Lefty” Foster and the Shaboo All-Stars are going to bring their uncompromising blend of “maximum rhythm & blues” to “Jazz at Sunset” Aug. 27.

In addition to great music, the evening also marks a series of returns — the return of Foster fronting the Shaboo All-Stars (after “officially” retiring in December 2019) and the return of the maximum power trio of keyboardist extraordinaire Mitch Chakour, sizzling saxophonist Deric Dyer and guitar virtuoso Cliff Goodwin, who haven’t played together since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Although he gave his final farewell performance with the Shaboo All-Stars on Dec. 20, 2019, in Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den, Foster is back.

Foster retired not because he lost his voice or his love for performing — he still has both — but due to “significant, ongoing medical reasons,” which, at the time, indicated that he would not be able to perform live ever again.

“Lefty returned and somewhere along the line he found the right doctor and changed his medication and he got better,” Goodwin said. “It’s unbelievable. It’s an unbelievable story.”

“Jazz at Sunset,” which would be aptly titled “Maximum R&B at Sunset” for this outing, also marks the 20th anniversary of the Shaboo All-Stars becoming Mohegan Sun Casino’s house band (and being renamed the Mohegan Sun All-Stars).

Not only is he well enough to sing and perform, Foster wanted to make his return to the stage since his premature retirement to be for all the good people of Worcester. And, yes, he still got the voice, the energy, charisma and stage presence.

Foster, who began his singing career at 14 and has worked with such legendary artists as B.B. King, the Temptations, Chuck Berry and Keith Richards, assembled the Shaboo All-Stars in 1979.

If Foster wasn’t enough to draw you out your post-COVID comfort zone, then you have the power trio of Chakour, Dyer and Goodwin.

Leeper Woman Arrested for Refusing to Return 13 Firearms, Other Items Belonging to Victim

shutterstock_608376650-cuffsFARMINGTON TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Charges have been filed against a Leeper woman who allegedly refused to return over $8,000 of items, including 13 firearms, that police say rightfully belong to a known victim.

Court documents indicate the Marienville-based State Police filed criminal charges against 46-year-old Tina Elizabeth Zacherl.

According to a criminal complaint, on August 10, a known victim reported that “his ex-girlfriend was refusing to return items that a judge had deemed his property.”

The complaint notes the victim provided police with paperwork showing that on June 17, 2021, President Judge Seidle-Patton issued an order for multiple items belonging to the victim to be relinquished by Tina Elizabeth Zacherl.

Representatives from the Clarion County Sheriff’s Office then accompanied the victim to his former residence in Farmington Township on August 2 to retrieve the items on the court order.

According to the complaint, the victim reported that of the 55 items to be returned to him by court order, only 18 items were returned.

Clarion County Sheriff Rex Munsee indicated that there were 13 firearms on the list of items to be relinquished to the victim and none of the firearms were relinquished by Zacherl. Zacherl then agreed to meet Sheriff Munsee on August 4 at a business in Tylersburg to relinquish the firearms, but she reportedly failed to arrive at the location as agreed, the complaint indicates.

The complaint states that Zacherl remains in possession of approximately the following firearms, valued at a total of $2,995.00:

Driver Drowns in Unami Creek Flood Waters

Severe flash flooding along the Unami Creek triggered by the remnants of Hurricane Ida claimed a man’s life in upper Bucks County Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police at Dublin said.

In a news release, troopers said 65-year-old Donald Allen Bauer of Perkiomenville, Montgomery County, drowned after his vehicle became submerged in flood waters.

A 54-year-old female passenger who was also in the vehicle was able to escape from it and survived, police said, adding that she was taken to St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus for treatment.

According to the news release, state police were first dispatched to the 1900 block of Trumbauersville Road around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday for a report of “a missing person from a vehicle that had driven into the flood waters of Unami Creek.”

After locating the vehicle–which was described as a 2013 Mazda CX9–and attempting a rescue, troopers said they and fire department personnel determined that “conditions were too severe” and postponed the rescue effort at 11:30 p.m.

At approximately 6 a.m. Thursday, along with fire department personnel and members of a water rescue team, troopers said they again attempted to retrieve the vehicle and subsequently found Bauer deceased inside it.

The news release indicated that the Bucks County Coroner’s Office pronounced Bauer dead at the scene at 10:10 a.m. determined that his cause of death was drowning.

Public to learn about Lenape people Sept. 25 at Madison museum

MADISON – The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts (METC) will host a program titled “Lenape Lifeways: Introducing the First People of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25.

This family-oriented program is free with regular museum admission. Pre-registration is recommended and can be found at www.metc.org.

As many as 10 million Native Americans lived in North America by the end of the 15th century.  Many thousands lived in “Lenapehocking,” the vast homeland of the Lenni Lenape, who were the first inhabitants of eastern Pennsylvania and parts of New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.

This program explores the life and times of these peaceful, progressive people, comparing and contrasting their social customs, history, religion, family life, agriculture, hunting, healing practices, arts and crafts, past and present contributions (and much more) with those of the Europeans and Colonial Americans of their time.

Carla Messinger of Native American Heritage Programs will lead this interactive program. She is the founder/director of Native American Heritage Programs and a descendant of the Lenape people, with 35 years of experience in educating the public about Lenape culture.

The organization’s mission is “to present, preserve, and perpetuate the history, lifeways, culture, and contributions of the Lenape and other Native American groups.”

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts explores American history with a focus on the life and stories of 18th- and 19th-century craftsmen and artisans.

Drawing on its rich collection, METC seeks to connect the lives of people and their stories, while providing a bridge from the past to the future. Housed in a Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building donated by D. Willis James to the people of Madison in 1900, METC offers something for visitors of all ages.

Nanticoke Area scoreboard to be dedicated Sept. 17 in memory of Distasio

The dedication of the scoreboard has been rescheduled due to electrical issues at the football field and will now be held on Sept. 17.

Dan Distasio, son of the late coach, said funds that were donated for the scoreboard were raised through the Daniel Distasio Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held for 13 years in honor of Coach Distasio.

“The funds were utilized to award scholarships to deserving students at Nanticoke and Crestwood,” Distasio said. “Over the years, in excess of $60,000 was awarded in scholarships. It was then decided that the remaining funds would be donated to Nanticoke in his memory.”

After discussions with school officials, Distasio said it was determined that the school was in need of an upgrade of the scoreboard and the funds were donated to the school.
