Indian mission school dedicated – 47abc

MILLSBORO, Del. – State representatives along with members from the Nanticoke Indian Tribe gathered at the Nanticoke Indian heritage center Monday morning to dedicate the building as a historical landmark

We’re told the center used to be a one-room school in the ’60s dedicated to educating Nanticoke Indian Tribe children. However, after it was closed it was used as a heritage and educational center.

The tribe has been working closely with the state to bring light to these historical landmarks that tell the Nanticoke’s story. Members of the tribe say it means a lot to continue to be recognized as an important part of Delaware’s history and culture. “They want to educate the public on how important their presence here after all these centuries meant and what they had to go through just to have their children educated,” says Steven Marz, Director of the state public archives and state archivist.

Meanwhile, Chief Natosha Norwood Carmine tells us, “It’s important to them to know that properly recognized by a marker place here on the property because it gives the meaning that is visible, it is tangible.” She adds, “I just think of our ancestors and if they’re looking down how proud they must be, our elders who couldn’t be here because of the weather. I know they’ll look up and see this on the channels that they see that they’ll be proud and pleased that we were able to accomplish this.”

Chief Carmine also tells 47 ABC, now that the building has been dedicated, tribe members want to build onto it and hold more events for tribe members and community members to continue educating them on their culture and history.

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment Scrapes Off Plans for Integrated Casino Resort in Greece — CasinoGamesPro.com

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment revealed it decided to scrape off its plans to establish a casino in Greece. The company is no longer involved in the integrated casino resort project it has been allowed to develop in Athens with a commercial partner.

According to an official company statement issued a couple of days ago, financial consideration became the reason why Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment withdrew from the project. In its statement, the company revealed it has thoroughly reviewed its operations and future projects in the conditions of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As a result, it decided not to take advantage of the concession rights it had been given for the Athens integrated casino resort project.

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment noted that it is currently focused on its large undertaking at Inspire Korea that would consume the next few years. Withdrawing from the project is considered the right thing to do for both the company and its stakeholders.

The announcement made by the company owned by the Mohegan Tribe came as a surprise to everyone, considering the once heated competition with Hard Rock International.

Recently, the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) has recently amended the operating license for Inspire Athens – the casino resort project that was supposed to come to life as a partnership between Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment and the Greek construction company GEK Terna.

Mohegan Sun wins “Best Casino Hotel” in USA Today awards

In the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, the Connecticut tribal property also got the “Best Casino Outside of Las Vegas” and “Best Player’s Club” awards after being chosen by a panel of experts including editors from USA Today and 10Best.com.

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment announced Thursday its Connecticut property, the Mohegan Sun, was voted “Best Casino Hotel” in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for the fourth consecutive time.

The land-based casino received the number one spot in the category, along with top rankings in “Best Casino Outside of Las Vegas”, and “Best Player’s Club” for its Momentum Rewards Program.

Nominees for the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards were chosen by a panel of experts that included editors from both USA Today and 10Best.com, as well as expert contributors. This year’s nominees included well-known casinos and resorts in the U.S., which were subject to vote during a four-week period.

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment was also recognized as part of Forbes’ annual list of America’s Best-In-State Employers 2021. Forbes and Statista based their choice on an independent survey of approximately 80,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 500 people in their U.S. operations. The surveys were administered using a series of online panels and provide a representative sample of the U.S. workforce.

In an official press release, Jeff Hamilton, President/General Manager of Mohegan Sun, spoke about this recognition and said: “It’s a tremendous honor to be named ‘Best Casino Hotel’ for the fourth year in a row by the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. At Mohegan Sun, we take pride in offering guests world-class levels of service while being home to an incredibly vast range of unique amenities and experiences, all under one roof. We feel these awards are a testament to…

Commemorating the first Thanksgiving dinner

Four centuries ago, the roots of Thanksgiving first took hold in our American soil. We living today commemorate the solemn dinner, back in the fall of 1621, shared by the Pilgrims of Plymouth, Mass., and the Wampanoag Indians, the local tribe who generously pulled the fragile Pilgrim colony through their first winter and taught them how to plant corn.

Let’s talk turkey about our Native American heritage. Suppose you had been one of the early explorers or settlers of North America. You would have found many things in your new land unknown to you. The handiest way of filling voids in your vocabulary would have been to ask the locals what words they used. The early colonists began borrowing words from Native Americans almost from the moment of their first contact, and many of those names have remained in our everyday language:

In a letter that English explorer John Smith wrote home in 1608 he described a critter that the Algonquian called a rahaughcum. Over the years the word was shortened and simplified to raccoon, one of the very first English words coined in America.

Pronouncing many of the Native American words was difficult for the early explorers and settlers. In many instances, they had to shorten and simplify the names. Identify the following animals from their Native American names:

apossoun (Don’t play dead now.)

otchock (How much wood?)

segankw (What’s black and white and stinks all over?)

The hidden animals are: opossum (Algonquian), woodchuck (Narragansett) and skunk (Algonquian). To this menagerie we may add the likes of caribou (Micmac), chipmunk (Ojibwa), moose (Algonquian), muskrat (Abenaki) and porgy (Algonquian).

You can expand the lexicon with the likes of food — squash (Narragansett), pecan (Algonquian), hominy (Algonquian), pone (Algonquian), pemmican (Cree) and succotash (Narragansett) — and other ingredients of Native American life — moccasin (Chippewa), toboggan (Algonquian), tomahawk (Algonquian),…

Nanticoke tribe mark Native American Day in Millsboro

The smell of fry bread and lima bean succotash filled the air at the Nanticoke Indian Museum grounds as tribal dancers, storytellers and drummers interpreted Native American culture last weekend. More than 175 people attended Native American Day, which is always held in early November in Millsboro.

“We do not choose to be storytellers, we are chosen,” intoned Nanticoke interpreter Ragghi Rain. “Our stories are sacred,” she told an assembled crowd of about 100 people as the storytelling program began last Saturday. “Our stories are the truth from what we have lived.”

The Nanticoke people are a Native American Algonquin people who have inhabited Delaware and Maryland for many centuries. They were first encountered by Captain John Smith in 1608 and were originally met with musket fire. The Nanticoke replied with baskets of food, and left warm fires and beads and other gifts as a sign of good faith.

On Nov. 15, the tribe will place a historic marker at the site of the historic Nanticoke Indian School, which now serves as an education center, and at the Nanticoke Indian Association Center, just a mile farther down Route 24. The Delaware Nature Conservancy (TNC) has also deeded and will also provide a land gift of 31 acres to help expand the two Millsboro-area facilities.

Sterling Street, 78, who is one of the local Nanticoke tribal elders, said, “We are raising funds during our capital campaign to add on to our museum here and our tribal center down the road to have a welcome center and a gift shop. We will have a training room…
