Take a Trip to Timbuctoo at Ocean County Library

WORLDLY: Guy Weston will share on New Jersey’s free black community pre-Civil War.(Supplied Photo)

The Ocean County Library presents a program about a remarkable New Jersey locale that presaged civil rights 50 years after the Revolutionary War. “Timbuctoo: New Jersey’s Free Black Community before the Civil War” will be presented in the Bishop Building of the Toms River branch on Wednesday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m.

Guy Weston, managing director of the Timbuctoo Historical Society, will detail the Burlington County community’s settlement in 1826, the people who enabled its formation and significant episodes such as its role in the Underground Railroad system. The group’s research reveals that its peak population was about 125, and today consists of 19 households within 50 acres.

The Timbuctoo Historical Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 2019 to “seek, document, preserve, interpret and perpetuate the history and heritage of Timbuctoo.”

Weston’s work encompasses research and public history initiatives to raise the profile of Timbuctoo, where his fourth-great-grandfather purchased land in 1829. Weston’s efforts include interpretive signage in the village, educational collaborations with local teachers and preservation of the Timbuctoo cemetery, where the oldest gravestone bears a date of 1847.

He serves as editor of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Journal, a contributing writer to the AAHGS Journal and AAHGS News, and a visiting scholar at Rutgers University.

Nanticoke man charged with stealing $26K from booster club

The former president of the Nanticoke varsity football booster club was charged Tuesday with stealing over $26,000 from the organization during his tenure, according to charges filed in court.

Sterling Kepp, 47, of 336 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, is facing a single felony count of theft alleging he drained all but about $222 from the account of the booster club, which is formally known as the Nanticoke 12th Man Football Club.

According to the complaint, Wendy Graves reported having difficulty getting information about the club’s PNC Bank account when she was appointed club treasurer in August 2023.

Despite repeated inquiries about the banking information, Kepp failed to provide her the information she needed to view the online account, police said.

In October 2023, Graves went to the bank to make a deposit and inquired about the account balance, learning that only about $222 remained, according to the complaint.

After discovering a substantial amount of missing money, Graves contacted Kepp to ask if he had any outstanding checks waiting to be deposited.

Kepp replied that he knew he owed money to the club and promised to “make it right,” according to the charges.

Graves then contacted Superintendent Ronald Grevera, and they reported the missing money to police.

During a review of the books, investigators discovered that there were “undocumented currency disbursements” totaling $26,543 from the account, according to the complaint.

Police say Kepp had handled all financial responsibilities for the club during the period when the money went missing.

As a result, he was charged with the single felony count of theft.

Magisterial District Judge Alexandra Kokura Kravitz arraigned Kepp on the charges Tuesday morning and released him on $50,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 12.

Anishinabek Nation 2SLGBTQQIA+Advisory Council member Heidi Whetung of Curve Lake First Nation joined the Nation Council panel on Day 2 of the 9th Annual Lands and Resources Forum held from February 11-13, in North Bay, Ont. – Photo by Laura Barrios

By Kelly Anne Smith

NORTH BAY- The 2025 Anishinabek Nation Lands and Resources Forum featured the Anishinabek Nation Councils Panel to start the second day of the three-day Forum from February 11-13.

Anishinabek Nation Councils Panel included Eshki-niigijig Southwest member from Munsee Delaware Nation Katelyn Peters; Kwe-Wuk-Southwest member from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation Betsy Kechego; 2SLGBTQQIA+ member Heidi Whetung of Curve Lake First Nation; Kwe-Wuk Northern Superior member from Michipocoten First Nation Evelyn Stone; Getzidjig Southwest member Leroy Dolson from Munsee Delaware Nation; and Eshki-niigijig Southeast member Terra Roy from Beausoleil and Nipissing First Nations.

Heidi Whetung urged that the language be included to talk about diversity. Whetung says she does not like the term 2SLGBTQQIA+, “Because a lot of our youth and adults don’t identify with any of those terms. It would be really nice to get back to the language. Put the language in there.”

Whetung says more education is needed in our communities.

“Acceptance, inclusive policies and practices, inclusive ceremony. So many of our youth and adults want to come to ceremony but aren’t accepted. Inclusive language. I don’t know if any of you have looked at the 2SLGBTQQIA+ action plan? It needs to be revisited…”

She says work needs to be done on stigma and discrimination in some communities and calls for culture, community, and community acceptance.

“If you look at this action plan, you don’t really see our youth, our people included in that action plan. It says, today, us 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals continue to express stigma,…

Bain Capital Assumes Control of Inspire Entertainment Resort in South Korea

Private equity firm Bain Capital has taken control of Inspire Entertainment Resort on Yeongjong Island, the largest integrated resort in South Korea. This follows financial difficulties faced by Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE), whose South Korean subsidiary defaulted on a substantial loan.

Bain Capital confirmed on Monday for The Korean Economic Daily that it had obtained a controlling interest in MGE Korea, the South Korean branch of U.S.-based Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment. MGE Korea previously held full ownership of the luxury resort, but after defaulting on a $275 million loan from multiple lenders in November 2021, it lost management control.

The resort, situated near Incheon International Airport, spans 461,661 square meters—comparable to 64 soccer fields. It features three five-star hotels with a combined total of 1,275 rooms, a 15,000-seat performance arena, an indoor water park under a glass dome, and a large-scale convention center capable of hosting up to 4,000 guests. Additionally, Inspire is the country’s largest foreigner-exclusive casino.

Financial Struggles and Bain Capital’s Intervention

Despite an investment of $1.6 billion, MGE Korea has struggled financially since the resort’s grand opening in January last year. By September, Inspire had recorded revenue of KRW 219 billion ($152 million) but suffered a net loss of KRW 265.4 billion ($152 million). In its most recent fiscal year (October 2023–September 2024), the resort posted an operating loss of KRW 156.4 billion ($108 million).

Bain Capital exercised its rights to take control of MGE Korea after the parent company was unable to meet its loan obligations. Consequently, the resort’s official name has been changed from Mohegan Inspire Entertainment Resort to Inspire Entertainment Resort.

During Mohegan’s fourth-quarter 2024 earnings call, the company’s COO, Ari Glazer, acknowledged the transition, stating, “Following the earnings release this morning and just a few hours ago,…
