Juliana Velasquez expects ‘unpredictable’ Bellator 262 title fight with Denise Kielholtz

Bellator flyweight champion Juliana Velasquez is not afraid to stand toe-to-toe with kickboxing champion Denise Kielholtz.

Velasquez (11-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA) is set to make her first title defense when she takes on Kielholtz on Friday at Bellator 262 from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Since losing to Veta Arteaga at Bellator 205, Bellator kickboxing champion Kielholtz (6-2 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) has won her past four bouts, most recently a 43-second knockout of Kate Jackson last October. But despite Kielholtz’s striking prowess, Velasquez thinks her size will play a factor.

“I recently watched Denise Kielholtz’s fight against Veta Arteaga, when Denise lost via standing guillotine,” Velasquez told MMA Junkie. “Denise and I are both judo black belts. Even though she’s more focused on kickboxing nowadays, I too enjoy striking. To be honest, I feel just as comfortable on the feet as I do on the ground. I feel Denise’s skills are similar to mine. I expect this to result in an unpredictable fight. Anything can happen. I have to stay alert since she’s a kickboxing champ, but I believe my reach will give me an advantage.”

With Friday being her first fight of the year since dethroning Ilima-Lei Macfarlane in December, Velasquez is hoping to squeeze another title defense in 2021.

“After this bout, I’d like to fight at least once more before the end of the year,” Velasquez said. “After my last one, I didn’t take the time to rest. This time around, I’m planning to take a one-month vacation. I’d like to take my mind off things for a while, so I can come back refreshed and refocus on fighting again.”

Man charged with burglarizing greenhouse in Wyoming, other crimes

WYOMING — A man arrested for breaking into Kasarda’s Greenhouse on Saturday and taking over 100 feet of copper piping is also facing charges alleging that he stole a PT Cruiser from a Wilkes-Barre repair shop and a bank card from the woman he had been staying with.

Patrick Lee Staley, 53, with a last known address in Wilkes-Barre but listed as “homeless” in the criminal complaint, was arrested on Monday night in Nanticoke after he was positively identified from surveillance footage as the man who burglarized Kasarda’s two days prior.

Staley is now facing charges from police departments in Wyoming, Nanticoke City and Wilkes-Barre City on various charges relating to the burglary and other related crimes.

According to the complaint:

Staley was initially identified as a suspect in the theft of a bank card on July 6 by the victim, a woman with whom Staley had been staying with in Wilkes-Barre for a few months.

The victim told police that she had last seen her card on July 5, and that on the day she called police, she noticed that a transaction had occured at the Pantry Quik in Hanover Township in which $201.75 had been withdrawn from her account.

The granddaughter of the victim told police that she suspected Staley, who had been staying with the victim as a favor to a downstairs neighbor who used to date Staley, according to the complaint.

Staley showed up at Wilkes-Barre City police headquarters on July 7 to turn himself in, admitting to taking the card without permission and to withdrawing $200 from an ATM.

The Kasarda’s burglary occurred 10 days later, on Saturday, and Wyoming Borough Police Chief Chris Mercavitch was called to the greenhouse on Monday to investigate the burglary.

Nature and history kayak tours explore Broad Creek

Quest Adventures, in collaboration with Delmarva Birding Weekends, is now offering guided paddling tours on historic Broad Creek in Laurel.

Waters once sailed by three-masted Chesapeake Bay schooners known as “sailing rams” are now navigated by a different type of vessel.

The Broad Creek flows into the Nanticoke River, one of the most wild and scenic rivers on Delmarva. The waterways are teeming with birds and other wildlife, and they have a rich history dating back to the First People of the Chesapeake region, the Nanticokes.

Quest Adventures has been a tourism staple in Delaware’s coastal resort area for more than 20 years, creating memories for individuals and families by delivering quality outdoor recreational experiences. The Quest team hopes to continue this success in western Sussex County with six new guided kayak tours that will appeal to nature lovers, history buffs and explorers of wild Delmarva.

Two trips will focus on the birds, flora and fauna of the waterway. A Wednesday, Aug. 25 tour will feature birds, basking turtles and other late-summer wildlife along Broad Creek. As summer transitions to fall, paddlers may discover warblers, vireos and flycatchers migrating south after nesting season. Year-round residents such as bald eagles, great blue herons and wood ducks are often encountered on Broad Creek, as are eastern painted turtles and northern red-bellied cooters.

As the sun sets, a host of animals begin to awaken in the woods and marshes beside the waterway. A twilight tour of Broad Creek Thursday, Sept. 9, will give paddlers an opportunity to look and listen for barred owls and eastern screech owls among the trees.

Tommy Thompson, a local historian and associate member of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, will lead Saturday paddles set for Aug. 28 and Oct. 2, talking about the history of Broad Creek as it has been…

Bellator 262 predictions — Juliana Velasquez vs. Denise Kielholtz: Fight card, odds, start time, live stream

Undefeated women’s flyweight champion Juliana Velasquez will be in action on Friday night when she defends her title against Denise Kielholtz in the main event of Bellator 262. The action is set to go down from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Velasquez is making the fist defense of the title she won with a decision win over then-champ Ilima-Lei Macfarlane this past December. That win ran Velasquez’s career record to an impressive 11-0, with six wins in the Bellator cage. The loss was the first of Macfarlane’s career, making Velasquez’s victory an even bigger accomplishment.

Kielholtz is an accomplished kickboxer, having captured the Bellator kickboxing women’s flyweight championship in 2016. In the Bellator MMA cage, Kielholtz has picked up a 6-1 record and is currently riding a four-fight winning streak, winning twice by knockout and three times by submission despite her striking background.

The action on Friday fills out nicely below the main event. What is expected to be a wild heavyweight scrap between veterans Tyrell Fortune and Matt Mitrione gets the co-main event slot. Fortune holds a 10-1 record in his career with all fights taking place under the Bellator MMA banner. His lone loss came by vicious knockout against Tim Johnson in February 2020, but he has scored stoppage victories in seven of his 10 wins. Mitrione, 42, is heading in the opposite direction ahead of this bout. The Bellator and UFC veteran has lost three straight after a promising start to his…

Baking treats at summer camp

Campers at a culinary camp at LCCC learned to slice, dice, sauté, and more.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — “Sprinkles by the handful” was part of the instructions in the cake decorating process as students learned how to bake and decorate cakes during the Luzerne County Community College Kids Culinary Boot Camp in Nanticoke.

For some students, this was the first opportunity to engage in the kitchen and with new friends.

“They are just fantastic,” said chef Instructor Kim McLendon. “They are very attentive, they listen, but they’re eager to just get back out there and just start cooking and just being amongst their friends.”

But many of these chefs say they’re here to learn.

“I’m learning a new skill, and it’s quite fun to do that because I just like to have like a general knowledge of things,” said 14-year-old Luke Colleran of Mountain Top.

“So, I can learn more, and my sister said, ‘Yay, maybe you can make eggs then,'” said 10-year-old Cecelia Cain of Mountain Top.

This boot camp is an opportunity for students to learn about cooking and an outlet for creative expression.

“I’m putting on the sprinkles on the peanut butter, add, like, a little pop to it,” said Cecelia.

“I’m going to make a giant Oreo by putting the vanilla in the middle and then the chocolate on the outside,” explained Luke.

“We allow them to say this is our taste test kitchen. I feel like it gives them that vast knowledge to be able to expand throughout the box and really learn to develop their culinary intuition, which is great,” said McLendon.

Earlier this week, the students learned to make salads and pasta. Next up is pizza, followed by a “Chopped”-style competition in Nanticoke.

The camp at LCCC wraps up at the end of the…

Olympics tracker: Keep up with New Jersey’s athletes at the 2021 Games in Tokyo

Looking to follow all of the athletes from New Jersey at the Olympic Games in Tokyo? Our USA TODAY Network team across the Garden State has you covered.

Check back here throughout the Games for the latest updates, from softball’s first pitch on July 20 — three days before the Opening Ceremony — through the Closing Ceremony on Aug. 8.

Alexia Lacatena makes Sussex County history

It’s a moment that will forever go down in Sussex County history.

Stanhope native Alexia Lacatena became the county’s first athlete to compete in the Summer Olympics when she came on to pitch in relief for the Italian national team against the United States on the opening day of competition on Thursday at Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium in Fukushima, Japan.

The 18-year-old Lenape Valley High School graduate took the ball from starter Greta Cecchetti with runners on the corners and no outs in the top of the fifth inning with the Italian national team trailing the U.S. 1-0.

“Right now, the pride of Lenape Valley and the Patriots, having an Olympic moment as a teenager,” Beth Mowins said on the broadcast.

“Pretty special moment for the youngster,” Michele Smith added.

Lacatena gave up a sacrifice fly, infield single and a walk in the fifth but got out of the jam and tossed a perfect sixth inning. The United States won the game, 2-0.

Lacatena, whose mother was born in Italy and whose father was born in New Jersey but grew up there, has been competing for the European side since she was 15. She was called up to the senior national team at 17, helping them win the European Championship earlier this month.

The Kentucky commit did not compete in her senior season for the Patriots this spring as she prepared to achieve her dream of competing in the Olympics.

“Growing up, it’s always been that I’m…

NB mourns former police chief Merwin

NEW BETHLEHEM – “Jim was all about the betterment of the community. He was consistent and it was never about him.”

That’s how retired District Judge Dan George characterized former New Bethlehem Police Chief Jim Merwin who passed away on Wednesday, July 7 at the age of 83.

Merwin, who became police chief in 1987, is remembered as the one who restored integrity and professionalism to the then-struggling New Bethlehem Police Department.

When Merwin took the helm, the department was suffering from a series of scandals and investigations. Aware of the monumental task that lay ahead of him, Merwin reportedly said at the time that he would “work overtime to heal the force’s damaged reputation.”

According to George, who remembers well the disarray that plagued the department at the time, Merwin’s work and dedication to the community accomplished that.

“After three-and-a-half years of dealing with that mess, [Jim] was a breath of fresh air,” George said. “If I was picking the cream of the crop of all the local officers [I’ve worked with], Jim would be at the top of the list.”

Former New Bethlehem Borough Council member Ed Goth concurred, noting that Merwin was “very dedicated to the police department and New Bethlehem Borough.”

“He would work hours and hours outside of his normal time because he felt that it was the right thing to do,” Goth said. “He was very well-respected within the law enforcement community.”

Clarion County Sheriff and retired state police trooper Rex Munsee recounted several important cases — including a homicide, suicide, bank robbery, assault and more — that he worked with Chief Merwin.

“When you worked with Jim, he was just so down to earth,” Munsee said, noting that Merwin often conducted suspect interviews like a conversation. “He was a non-threatening police officer, and he listened to what people said.”

One of their more…
