Talk Focuses on NJ Maritime Events

The Beach Haven Public Library hosts a talk on “Historical New Jersey Maritime Events” on Friday, June 13 at 1 p.m.
The talk by author Rick Geffken covers events beginning with Henry Hudson in 1609 through the Revolutionary War to today.
Geffken has authored numerous articles on New Jersey history and presented historical papers at New Jersey History and Historic Preservation, the New Jersey Education Association, the New Jersey Library Association, and the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton).
He is part of a project called the New Jersey Slavery Records Index under the auspices of Rutgers University (New Brunswick). He joined the New Jersey Social Justice Reconciliation Committee to commemorate the only recorded lynching of a black man in New Jersey.
In 2023, Geffken was recognized for historical contributions by the Monmouth County Historical Association and the Monmouth County Clerk for his efforts in the preservation and knowledge of Monmouth County history.
A former U.S. Army officer and Vietnam veteran, he retired from a career with Hewlett-Packard. He earned a B.S. from St. Peter’s University, a teaching certificate from Monmouth University and a master’s degree from Montclair State University.
Geffken has authored numerous articles on various aspects of New Jersey history for local newspapers, magazines, historical societies and newsletters. He has presented historical papers at the New Jersey History and Historic Preservation conferences. He has participated in symposia for groups such as the Rutgers Business School in Newark and the Navesink Maritime Historical Association, and has appeared on the New Jersey cable TV show “Family Historian.”

Thirty forest campsites are available for reservations
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new system for campsite reservations is now available for Hocking State Forest and for Mohican-Memorial State Forest. There are 23 campsites available for reservation at the Hocking State Forest Horse Campground, and seven Park-and-Pack campsites available at Mohican-Memorial State Forest. The sites were previously first come, first served camping areas.
“Ohio’s state forests provide visitors with a unique camping experience,” said ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser. “This new system will not only allow people to plan ahead but give us a better idea of who is using the campground and allow us to improve our services.”
The new reservation system is now available to book reservations that start on Monday, September 1 and beyond. When making a reservation, people will be asked to provide their name, address, vehicle license plate number, as well as the camping equipment they plan to bring to the site.
After Monday, September 1, all campers at Hocking and Mohican-Memorial state forests will be required to show a valid camping permit. All permits will be issued through the new reservation system via email when booking reservations are completed. Campers can bring a printed copy or save a digital version on their phones.
The ODNR Division of Forestry provides the following guidelines for making reservations with the new system:
- There is no charge to set up an account. Accounts are set up using the OH|ID secure login system.
- There is no charge to create or cancel a reservation.
- Users may reserve a campsite up to 90 days in advance.
- Users are limited to reserving 14 days within a 30-day window.
- Users may reserve up to two campsites for the same dates at one campground.

Restoration Efforts Help Quadruple Quail Population in Nanticoke River Wildlife Management Area

The softball-sized, onomatopoeically-named bobwhite quail needs four things in its habitat: a place to nest and raise its young, a place to hide from predators, a place with food, and a place for the winter.
A century ago it was easy to find all four. By a decade ago, it was almost impossible. The groundbird’s early morning “poor, bob-white” calls that have long been a fixture of rural life were fading.
But today, quail are calling once again in the Nanticoke River Wildlife Management Area in Wicomico County, thanks to habitat restoration by the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service.
Wild Turkey and Upland Game Bird Project Manager Bob Long is leading the department’s efforts to restore quail in Maryland. In addition to making improvements on public lands, Long and private groups such as Chesapeake Bay Quail Forever are encouraging private property owners to make quail-friendly improvements.

Overall, quail have declined more than 90% in Maryland since the 1950s. A reduction in large predators through the centuries allowed smaller predators such as raccoons and foxes to thrive — bad news for the prey of those small predators, quail included.
Farming practices have also changed over time, as there are fewer small farms and more large farms on Delmarva, which tend to use every inch of land for crop production, which leaves limited space for the scrub and brush habitat where quail…
