Thomas L. Grant OBITUARY
Thomas L. Grant, 76, of Edwardsville and formerly Nanticoke, passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 23, 2013, at home following an illness.
Born on April 11, 1937, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Otto and Edith Lux Grant. He resided most of his life at his home at East Green and Chestnut streets, Nanticoke, until moving to Edwardsville in 2010.
He graduated from Nanticoke High School, Class of 1955, and from August 1955 to 1958, he served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany, attaining the rank of Specialist 4. He also served as a reservist until 1961.
Early in life he worked in the breaker of the Loomis Colliery and later was a machinist at Kenar Machine shop, Wilkes-Barre, and Sandvik Steel Company, Mountain Top. He was also a self-employed General Contractor for many years. In later years he worked in maintenance at First Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, and last at Convention Hall, Pittston, until retiring in 1999.
He was an active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served on the Board of Church Council. He also used his mechanical talent doing repairs and maintenance of the church and parsonage for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Dwyer, and a brother, Otto Grant Jr.
Surviving is his wife of 49 years, the former Jemiel Shiner; a son, Thomas Grant, Jones Creek, Texas; and daughters, Jemiel Smeltz and her husband, Daniel, Oaks, Pa.; Kimberly MacMullen and her husband, Duncan, Jackson Township; and Ruth Grant, Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Zachary and Kara Smeltz and Lauren and Collin MacMullen; a sister, Esther Moyer and her husband, Carl, Dallas; and several nieces and nephews.
