Uncover the Fascinating Story of the American Woodcock This Spring in Union County

The Union County Board of County Commissioners and the Union County Department of Parks and Recreation are excited to announce the return of Union County’s annual Woodcock Talk and Walk Events to Watchung Reservation and Lenape Park. The events include a special PowerPoint presentation and guided indoor/outdoor experience that will explore the lifestyle and behaviors of this remarkably unique species.

“This event offers a wonderful opportunity for our community to mark the first signs of spring together, learn more about this curious little bird, and understand the significance of protecting our natural open spaces,” said Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon. “Join us as we discuss the American Woodcock and the importance of working together to preserve and protect our local ecosystems. By doing so, we’ll ensure that this unique species can continue to call Union County their home for years to come.”

The first Woodcock Talk & Walk event of the season will take place on Tuesday, March 11th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Masker’s Barn, located within the Deserted Village of the Watchung Reservation, 13 Cataract Hollow Road in Berkeley Heights. A second event will be held on Thursday, March 20th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lenape Park, located at 130 Kenilworth Boulevard in Cranford.

The free events provide seasoned bird lovers and beginners alike the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the American Woodcock and learn more about the elusive species. Also known as the Timberdoodle, Labrador Twister, Night Partridge, mudbat or bog sucker, the American Woodcock has several distinct features. Aside from its rotund, orange-fluff belly, long bill, and short legs, the Woodcock is also recognized for its preference for damp, dense woodlands and can usually be found probing moist soil for earthworms or insects.

What Happened to Alyssa Thomas at Unrivaled? Digging Deeper Into Into WNBA Star’s Absence Against Phantom BC

Alyssa Thomas has always been the kind of player who makes her presence felt on the court. Whether it’s crashing the boards, orchestrating plays, or setting the defensive tone, she is the engine that keeps her team running. But when the Laces took the floor against Phantom BC on February 18, Thomas was nowhere to be seen. Her absence raised immediate questions, especially considering her role as one of the team’s most influential leaders.

As it turns out, the knee injury she suffered on January 23 has yet to fully heal—leaving both fans and teammates wondering when their captain will return. According to a recent post on X by Desert Wave Media, “Phoenix Mercury/Laces BC forward Alyssa Thomas is OUT (right leg) for the Laces tonight vs. Phantom and Phoenix Mercury/Rose BC wing Kahleah Copper (right leg) is OUT for Rose tonight vs. Vinyl.”

Although the Laces won the game 75-68 to improve to a 5-3 record, her absence was still a significant talking point. During their January 23 matchup against Phantom BC, Thomas exited in the fourth quarter after suffering a right knee injury, which she got while contesting a rebound with Rhyne Howard.

She was seen clutching her knee in visible pain before being helped off the court by a trainer. The league announced that she would be re-evaluated the following morning, but nearly a month later, she has yet to make her return.

WRIGHT TWP. — In a season of highs and lows for the Crestwood boys’ basketball team, the lowest moment might have been a 30-29 loss to Nanticoke in the teams’ regular-season finale just 12 days ago.

In a rematch on Tuesday, the Comets got 18 points from junior standout Ayden Agapito, scoring from six teammates and a stellar defensive effort in a 44-24 victory over the Trojans in a District 2 Class 5A quarterfinal.

The win sends No. 3-seeded Crestwood (14-9) into the district semifinals against No. 2 Abington Heights, Friday, in Clarks Summit. Nanticoke ended its season with a 7-16 record.

The Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas and the Metis of Canada Form an Alliance

The Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas’ (FANA) Minister of International Affairs, Principal Chief Dr. Ronald Yonaguska Holloway of the SandHill Band of Lenape and Cherokee Indians (SandHill) has been working behind the scenes for many months with the Metis of Canada. Also working diligently with Principal Chief Holloway were FANA’s Ambassador to the eastern half of Turtle Island, Red Chief Lance Shauger of the SandHill, and Mr. Douglas Scott, FANA’s Ambassador to the Commonwealth and the Asia Pacific region.

Before I write about the agreement between the parties mentioned above, I would like to share some background information regarding the Metis of Canada.

The Metis of Canada is one of three legally recognized Indigenous peoples in Canada under the Constitution Act passed in 1982 in Canada.  The other two tribes are Inuit and First Nations.
They have a population of over 600,000 indigenous people spread throughout Canada’s Western and Northern regions.

After months of negotiations, The Metis Alliance of Canada and FANA are working on several proposed projects.  This is being done so that the Alliance can meet the conditions and criteria required to join the Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas. FANA’s Minister of International Affairs, Principal Chief Dr. Ronald Yonaguska Holloway will be assisting the Metis.

I quote from a press release that the Metis Alliance posted.  “…It is our goal to cultivate an environment conducive to reaching the ability of full ascension to The Federation of Aboriginal Nations of America; while Joining other pioneering indigenous institutions in reclaiming our rightful places on the world stage as indigenous global leaders. This is our international goal and responsibility in protecting our future generations through achieving our Creator given rights to actionable sovereignty; with all the rights and responsibilities therein. This agreement is wide-sweeping in scope. It…
