Construction progresses at Mohican State Park’s new visitor center

LOUDONVILLE — The new Mohican State Park Visitor Center is taking shape, bringing an exciting addition to one of Ohio’s most beloved state parks.

Despite winter’s chill, construction crews have continued their work, steadily advancing toward an anticipated late 2025 opening.
 
The ODNR Division of Engineering and construction crews are nearing completion of the truss installation, a key milestone in the project’s progress.

By late February, crews anticipate completing the roofing, bringing the structure closer to its final form.

“We’re thrilled to see this project moving forward, even through the challenges of winter weather,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “The new visitor center will serve as a gateway to Mohican State Park, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about the area’s natural beauty while enhancing their overall park experience.”
 
Strategically located near the park’s main entrance, the new visitor center will be a prominent feature visible from the roadway. Nestled next to the State Scenic Clear Fork of the Mohican River within the floodplain, the site offers a unique blend of natural beauty and accessibility.

The building’s design includes an extended, low-slope ramp leading to the entrance, flanked by educational rain gardens and gathering spaces, providing visitors with interactive and educational opportunities.
 
The visitor center’s grand entrance will feature landscaping to mitigate potential flooding concerns. The space will also feature exterior porches and a fireplace, creating a welcoming space for visitors to relax and enjoy the outdoors year-round.

Inspired by traditional forest lodges, the new visitor center will have olive green exterior siding atop a stone base, reflecting the stone outcroppings found throughout the park. Shaded porches and stone chimneys will add to the building’s inviting, homey ambiance.

Passersby driving through Route 416 in the Town of Montgomery have likely observed a sacred area across the street from Medline’s facility: the town’s African American Cemetery, the resting place for dozens of African Americans, both enslaved and free, who were buried during the 18th and 19th centuries. In honor of these individuals, the Sacred Place of My Ancestors hosted its fifth annual wreath-laying ceremony in the town last Saturday, February 8, featuring several speeches and ample reflection.

Busy Monday At Pocono As Season Opener Approaches

The trotters and pacers took their first 2025 spins around the five-eighths-mile oval at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania on Monday morning, Feb. 10.

The conditions were not prime with a “good” track rated at “+1” and later “+2,” but several horses showed they are ready to get the season underway, with the first card scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.

Most impressive among the qualifiers was Virgo, an Always A Virgin gelding who concluded a fine 2024 with a 1:50.2 victory on closing day (Dec. 31) at Harrah’s Philadelphia. He looks to extend his form into 2025, and off a front-stepping pacing mile of :30, :58, 1:26.2, and 1:54.1 he seems well on his way to that goal for owners Mark Jakubik and Jason Darling. Virgo was driven by Jim Pantaleano and is trained by Darren Taneyhill, who doubled along with conditioners Lou Pena and Joe Skowyra.

Pantaleano (seventh in the standings at Pocono last year and a two-time winner during this qualifying session) was the only driver outside of 2024’s top five dash-winners to get home first on Monday. Braxten Boyd and Anthony Napolitano each had three triumphs (Napolitano drove the fastest trotter, the Canadian returnee Frank The Elder, who won in 1:57.3 for trainer Deborah Daguet and owner Stephen Klunowski). Meet champion Matt Kakaley had two wins, and Tyler Buter and George Napolitano Jr. each recorded a victory.

A set of six qualifiers was also drawn on Monday to be raced right back at Pocono on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. After this week, qualifiers will be held on Wednesday mornings.

Scranton’s next mural will commemorate the Lenape indigenous people

Scranton’s next mural downtown will have a Lenape theme, the Lackawanna County Commissioners announced Thursday.

A joint project by the county and the nonprofit Scranton Tomorrow, the mural aims to raise awareness of the history of the indigenous people who first settled the Lackawanna Valley and to acknowledge and honor their legacy.

Titled “Remembrance and Continuance: The Lenape Story in Scranton,” the mural will be painted on the north side of the Brixx Building, 130 N. Washington Ave., which is owned by Art Russo’s ATR Properties.

Commissioners Bill Gaughan, Matt McGloin and Chris Chermak unanimously approved the project Wednesday during their regular meeting, following a presentation by Maureen McGuigan, director of the Department of Arts and Culture.

While most of the historical focus on Lackawanna County is on its major role in anthracite mining and the Industrial Revolution, the mural and programs it will foster will offer opportunities to examine the region’s deeper past.

“Public art like this not only beautifies our communities but also preserves and celebrates our rich cultural heritage. By recognizing the Lenape, we’re acknowledging our past and inspiring a future that values diversity, history, and artistic expression across our county,” Gaughan said in the announcement.

2025 Black Lake sturgeon season results announced

ONAWAY – After only 17 minutes of fishing, this year’s sturgeon season on Black Lake (in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties) ended at 8:17 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1.

The season, which included spearing and hook-and-line fishing, was scheduled to run Feb. 1-5, or until the harvest quota of six lake sturgeon had been reached.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources set the harvest limit for the season at six fish, though anglers were allocated a season quota of seven sturgeon by agreement with tribal governments. This limit was placed to accommodate the expected number of anglers and anticipate the possibility of near simultaneous harvest of more than one fish. Such a scenario occurred this year, as a seventh fish was harvested before notification of the season closure could be sent out.

There were 797 registered anglers this year. The harvested sturgeon ranged in size from 43.5 inches to 64 inches long and weighed 18.2 pounds to 78.3 pounds.

• The first fish was a 45.7-inch sturgeon that weighed 18.8 pounds.

• Fish number two was a 43.5-inch sturgeon that weighed 18.2 pounds.

• Fish three was a 46.1-inch sturgeon that weighed 19 pounds.

• Fish four was a 64-inch female that weighed 78.3 pounds.

• The fifth fish was a 56.7-inch fish that weighed 41.9 pounds.

• The sixth fish was a 51-inch fish that weighed 25.5 pounds.

• The seventh fish was a 60.5-inch fish that weighed 47.8 pounds.

Only two of the harvested fish had been captured before by Michigan State University and the DNR during spring spawning runs in the Black River or during past surveys of Black Lake. Ricky de los Santos and ‘King’ Kevin Walsh Prepare for War this Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena

At first glance, the fighters have much in common: they have emerged as the top 2 featherweights in the northeast US, each coming off the biggest win of their respective careers last year at Mohegan Sun Arena. 

De los Santos won the WBC title against Nathan Martinez via unanimous decision in February, while Walsh dispatched of Irvin Gonzalez in 4 rounds to pick up the New England Super Featherweight title in November.  They also proudly represent the fighting New England cities of Brockton, MA (Walsh) and Pawtucket, RI (de los Santos). 

The pugilists recently sat down with The Final Bell podcast to discuss a showdown that many believe will steal the show on Saturday night.  They showed mutual respect and acknowledged the other’s strengths, but with emotions running high, they also traded a few barbs.

“He’s a tough fighter,” said Walsh when assessing de los Santos.  “He’s fast, he’s got skills and good footwork.  I’m looking forward to the challenge.  These are the moments I live for.”

Walsh had a late start in boxing.  The 32-year-old turned pro in 2021 and reeled off 15 victories in only 4 years.  2024 was his best year to date, as the Brockton native fought 5 times and won 2 titles.  With each outing, Walsh steadily increased his level of opposition and showed marked improvement, something that’s not lost on de los Santos.
