LENAPEHOKING — An ambitious multimedia project has taken over the campus of one of the world’s leading performing arts centers, here on the homelands of the Lenape people. Conceived by the legendary musician Nona Hendryx, The Dream Machine Experience is rooted in Afro-Futurism, the social, political and cultural movement that explores the intersection of the African diaspora with science and technology. A broad range of creative works, utilizing everything from augmented reality to artificial intelligence, are on display at the Lincoln Center in New York City through the end of June. But as Hendryx explained on Saturday evening, Native people are playing a critical role in the shared vision of the future. Virgil Ortiz, from the Pueblo of Cochiti in New Mexico, and Cannupa Hanska Luger, a citizen of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation in North Dakota, are two of the featured artists in the installation. “All people are a part of Afro-Futurism,” Hendryx said in Lenapehoking, the Lenape term for the homelands they were removed from in the northeastern part of the United States. “People think that because it’s called Afro-Futurism that it is a Black-only experience,” Hendryx continued at a panel presentation with several of her creative partners. “It is that we all — as I said earlier — come out of Africa. So we can all be a part of Afro-Futurism.”…

Beverly Heritage Day to feature ‘living history’

Local News

Jun 14, 2024

Brad Johnson

Executive Editor

BEVERLY — A special presentation during Beverly Heritage Day will illustrate the complicated relationships between pioneers on the Virginia frontier, and the Indigenous people who had long called this land home.

Beverly Heritage Day – Centuries of History, will take place Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will be free and open to the public throughout Beverly. The event is sponsored by the Beverly Heritage Center, which will offer free admission.

The event is also sponsored by the Town of Beverly, Citizens Bank of West Virginia, and Mountain Valley Bank, in partnership with the Beverly Fireman’s Festival, which will run July 20 -27.

On July 20, Doug Wood of Hurricane, will portray the character Thomas Ingles as a presentation of the West Virginia Humanities Council  History Alive! program. Thomas was captured along with his mother in a frontier raid at the age of 4, and was given to a Shawnee family in present-day Ohio to be raised in place of their deceased child.

Returning to his birth parents as a Shawnee man at the age of 17, Thomas received a Virginia gentleman’s education and served in the Point Pleasant campaign of Dunmore’s War in 1774 – a conflict that pitted his Virginia and Shawnee communities against each other on the battlefield.

This hour-long History Alive! Presentation, scheduled for 3 p.m., will include a monologue by the historical character Thomas Ingles, followed by interactive discussions between the audience and the character and then with the presenter.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Wood will portray the story of a Lenape man, explaining and…

Lenape Pines Service Unit Honors Heros With Heartwarming Tribute to Veterans

Lenape Pines Service Unit Girl Scouts and Leaders Honor Veterans at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.Lenape Pines Service Unit Girl Scouts and Leaders Honor Veterans at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.

Every once in a while, you come across stories that touch your heart and remind you of the goodness in the world. One such story is the dedication of our Girl Scouts in honoring Veterans. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on an inspiring tradition where Girl Scouts from the Lenape Pines Service Unit place flags on the graves of Veterans three times a year.

In a world that moves way too fast, it’s important to take a step back and remember those who have paved the way for our freedom. These Lenape Pines Girl Scouts do just that by honoring Veterans in their community. The Lenape Pines Service Unit, serving girls in and around Mays Landing, NJ, has embraced this noble tradition. They visit the Atlantic County Veteran’s Cemetery at Estell Manor Park three times a year, placing flags on the graves of those who have served our nation. This act of service is a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact.

Honoring Veterans is not just about paying tribute; it’s about acknowledging the sacrifices made for our freedom. Placing flags on graves teaches Girl Scouts the importance of gratitude. It’s a hands-on way for them to understand and appreciate the freedoms they enjoy today. This tradition fosters a sense of pride and responsibility in these young minds, encouraging them to carry these values throughout their lives.

For many Girl Scouts, participating in these events becomes a cherished memory. It’s a chance to learn about history, hear firsthand Veterans’ accounts, and understand service’s true meaning. These experiences shape their character and inspire them to continue…

According to the Borough, the free Summer Concert Series will be at the Amphitheater at Lenape Park, with each show running from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each concert has free parking on site and is open to the public.Lawn chairs and blankets encouraged.

The Amphitheater, according to the borough, was made possible by the generosity of Oldcastle PreCast. It will be the third year for the Amphitheater to host the Summer Concert Series.

Here is who is on the bill for 2024:

Wednesday, July 10: Whole Lotta Led, a tribute to Led Zeppelin, presented by QNB Bank.

Wednesday, July 17: AllStar Country Band, modern and classic county and rock.

Perkasie borough announces free summer concert lineup

PERKASIE — Perkasie borough has announced the lineup of its free summer concert series at the town’s Amphitheater in Lenape Park.

This year’s series will open with Whole Lotta LED, a group of musicians who recreate the music of Led Zeppelin. The eight-date season will go on to feature a range of musical genres, including classic rock, folk, funk, blues, steel drums and rock ‘n roll, said a borough press release.

The Lenape Park Amphitheater is situated close to the borough’s dog park on Constitution Avenue. Concerts run from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, from June 10 to August 21. The Bucks County Folk Song Society will join the lineup on June 19. The full list of dates and description of each act can be found at https://perkasieborough.org/information/community-events/summer-concert-series/

“We are thrilled to bring the Perkasie Summer Concert Series back to beautiful Lenape Park,” said Mayor Jeff Hollenbach. “An ice cream, great music and a night out with our neighbors in the community is one of the very best ways to spend a summer evening.”

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Local food vendors and activities for the kids will also be nearby. Admission is free and open to the public, and parking is available on site. For more information about upcoming borough events, visit https://perkasieborough.org/information/community-events/.

The Perkasie Summer Concert Series is made possible through the support of local businesses and community organizations, including A&T Chevrolet-Subaru, Begley Carlin & Mandio, Gilmore & Associates, Grim Biehn & Thatcher and QNB.
