An Indigenous garden is sprouting at Manhattan’s Morgan Library

Stalks of corn stand tall among the towering skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan as part of a new exhibition at The Morgan Library & Museum which pays tribute to Indigenous culture.

The exhibit, called “Nora Thompson Dean: Lenape Teacher and Herbalist,” focuses on the life of Nora Thompson Dean (1907–1984), who worked to preserve Lenape culture. Featuring letters, photographs and a Three Sisters garden, the show’s on view now through September 17.

RECOMMENDED: A new exhibit at Brooklyn Botanic Garden showcases the power of trees

The museum itself, like all of Manhattan and New Jersey plus parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut, sits on what was once called Lenapehoking, the ancestral lands of the Lenape. Beginning in the early 1600s, European settlers forced the Lenape people from these lands. There are now federally recognized Lenape nations in Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Canada, places where displaced Lenape people live.

About Nora Thompson Dean

Dean was born in Oklahoma and she was determined to preserve her culture’s language, spiritual beliefs and knowledge of the natural world. As part of that work, she visited Lenapehoking many times, including a visit to New York City, The Morgan’s assistant curator Sal Robinson told Time Out New York. During the visit, Dean was scheduled to meet then-Mayor Ed Koch, but he never showed up for the appointment, instead sending an aide to meet her with an NYC souvenir.

At last, Dean is getting the spotlight in New York City with an exhibit that recognizes her deeply important work. To create the exhibition, the Morgan worked with the Lenape Center and Hudson Valley Farm Hub.

An ornate rotunda filled with display cases for the Nora Thompson Dean exhibit.

Experience Sound Installation ‘nkwiluntàmën’ at Pennsbury Manor

MORRISVILLE, Pa. (WPVI) — Tour the grounds of Pennsbury Manor with your phone as your compass and experience a sound installation called ‘nkwiluntmn’ by Indigenous artist Nathan Young.

“‘nkwiluntmn’ is the Unami Lenape name of this piece,” says Young.

It means I am lonesome for it.

“Such as the sound of a drum,” says Young.

The Lenape lived on the land where Pennsbury Manor is located.

“Pennsbury Manor is a reconstructed home of William Penn,” says Douglas Miller, historic site administrator for Pennsbury Manor.

“And the Pennsylvania story would be radically different if he was not welcomed by the Lenape,” says Miller.

Young lives in Oklahoma, but his tribe is native to Pennsylvania.

“This is the homelands of my ancestors – it’s Lenapehoking,” says Young, who is a member of the Delaware Tribe of Indians.

Young created what he calls a multi-sonic experience with four musicalized benches and four signs, that together create a narrative.

“I’m trying to encode Lenape thoughts and Lenape ideas into this space,” he says.

Young says he included some thoughts on what it might have felt like to be forced to leave your home.

Young says it’s been hundreds of years since the voices of the Delaware Tribe have been expressed in the area of Pennsbury Manor and “that’s the longing.”

The signs are two-sided.

Young says one side includes prose about exile, while the other side has designs meant to inspire what territories and space might have looked like.

“This is an opportunity, through art, to touch a little bit of that history,” says Miller.

Young says, “It’s important to remember that there were people here before.”

Nathan Young’s ‘nkwiluntmn’ runs through next April.

Lower Bucks County as United States capital? Citizens twice hoped it would happen

Edgely bridge in Lower Bucks County may need to be replaced, says Bristol Township. First, its safety needs to be assessed.

The Edgely bridge, sometimes called the Randall Avenue bridge, is in poor shape and may need to be replaced. Bristol Township’s investigating.

JD Mullane, Bucks County Courier Times

It surprised me several years ago to learn Morrisville nearly became Washington, D.C. I got another jolt lately: Bristolians once expected their village to become Philadelphia which for a time was the U.S. capital. That bit of trivia got me to envisioning the impact on Bucks County had those dreams come true.

Bristol as Philadelphia and D.C.

In 1672, Quaker founder George Fox and companions forged their way on horseback on wilderness paths from Long Island through New Jersey to reach Maryland. At Burlington Island, Lenape Indians ferried them across the Delaware River in canoes. Their horses swam across. The travelers landed at what George deemed an ideal site for a settlement.

Within a decade, English Quakers took the hint. They got to work building Buckingham village (the future Bristol) in the new colony of Pennsylvania. Just upstream, William Penn purchased 8,431 acres from the Lenape for his Pennsbury Manor home plus territory…
