Brett Chiesa belted a three-homer for the Chiefs, who raised their win streak to six with the win. Evan Brown had two hits, including a double, and run scored.

Grant Hunter had a hit and run scored and Jonathan Adelmann fanned eight in six innings for the Indians.

The meeting was the third in four days between the Cougars and Indians.

Boys lacrosse: North Group 1 1st round

Mahwah 15, Pascack Hills 4

Cameron Robator netted four goals to lead third-seeded Mahwah to a 15-4 win over Pascack Hills in the first round of the North Group 1 tournament in Mahwah.

Mahwah (12-7) advances to Wednesday’s semifinals, where it will face either sixth-seeded Ramsey or 11th-seeded Newton.

Richard Sciaino added on two goals and three assists to the win. Cameron Sanchez contributed two goals and one assist while Jack Kunisch scored twice.

Pascack Hills ends its season with an 11-8 record.

Caldwell 19, Indian Hills 3

Jack Goldbach posted four goals and two assists to lead second-seeded Caldwell in a 19-3 win over 15th-seed Indian Hills, in the quarterfinals of the North 1 tournament, in West Caldwell.

Caldwell (13-8) will face seventh-seeded Kinnelon in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Luke Kurzum added on three goals and four assists while Harry Boland also tallied a hat trick.

Indian Hills ends it season with an 11-5 record.

Lenape Valley 9, Pequannock 3

Kevin Giusti tallied three goals and two assists as ninth-seeded Lenape Valley rolled to a 9-3 win over eighth-seeded Pequannock in the quarterfinals of the North 1 tournament in Pompton Plains.

Lenape Valley (11-11) will face either top-seeded Mountain Lakes or 16th-seeded Boonton in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Tyler Brennan added on two goals and four assists to the win.

Pequannock ends its season with a 16-3 record.

Bucks police train to aid those in crisis

Law enforcement officers from across Bucks County recently took part in a training program designed to support them when they’re interacting with people struggling with mental health episodes.

Hosted by the Doylestown-based Lenape Valley Foundation, dozens of police listened to Sharon Curran, LVF’s chief executive officer, provide an in-depth presentation on post-traumatic stress disorder.

With as many as 7 percent to 8 percent of the population believed to have the medical condition, Curran said, it’s important that police know what to look for and how to respond to someone with PTSD. Someone with the disorder, Curran explained, could be taken back to what caused his or her trauma and be unable to appropriately interact with officers. Others may “disassociate” from the situation and not respond to questions, or know where they are.

In those circumstances, recognizing signs of PTSD can help police. Curran said, “you’re looking for red flags. Slow everything down, reduce stimuli, use a calm voice and don’t touch the person before telling them you’re going to…focus on all five senses.”

During another part of the training, held at the Bucks County Public Safety Training Center in Doylestown Township, officers experienced police calls through a virtual reality program, said Nicole Wolf, Lenape Valley’s director of education and training.

“Every scenario is created from a real police call,” Wolf said. During each one, officers can chose how they’ll react and see the outcome. They also have an opportunity to take a different course of action and see what that result will be.

Charles J. Pinkerton, a lieutenant with the Northampton Police Department, is a co-chair of the crisis team task force.

“The county saw the need for this type of training,” he said, and began a task force in 2008. It’s also important that officers…

Softball playoff roundup, keep up with all the action from the NJSIAA tournament

The 11th-seeded Washington Township High School softball team is moving on.

The Minutemaids churned out a comeback win thanks to a six-run sixth inning en route to a 6-3 victory over sixth-seeded Vineland in the opening round of the South Jersey Group 4 tournament on Tuesday.

It was Washington Township’s first playoff win since 2017.

Washington Township will travel to third-seeded Kingsway for Friday’s quarterfinal-round game.

Kingsway 9, Millville 1: Noelle Flail smacked a two-run homer and Olivia Sciulli and Ava Snyder each scored a pair of runs as the third-seeded Dragons eliminated the Thunderbolts. Jessa Pieters scattered five singles, didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight to earn the win for Kingsway (15-9).

Cherokee 2, Eastern 0: Sammie Friel recorded her 500th career strikeout on her way to a complete-game shutout and Kasey McNee drove in a pair of runs as fourth-seeded Cherokee advanced.

Rancocas Valley 6 Toms River East 5: The Red Devils rallied from a four-run deficit to advance into the quarterfinals.

RV (13-11) will travel to Lenape for Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Lenape 13, Pennsauken 0: Maya Knasiak twirled a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as second-seeded Lenape       cruised to its 21st win of the season. Vanessa Meyers (three hits, two runs), Leah Taylor (two hits, three runs, three RBIs) and Katie Vuong (two hits, three runs) powered the offense.

Egg Harbor Twp. 11, Williamstown 1: Sienna Walterson singled, doubled and drove in three runs as the top-seeded Eagles started their title defense in dominating fashion. Payton Colbert had three knocks while Madison Dollard, Madison Biddle and Sofia Spatocco added two hits apiece for EHT, which will host GCIT on Friday.

Look At All Of The Fishing In Atlantic City, New Jersey In 1957

I love this social media page and they are “The Keeper” of so much amazing Atlantic City history.

The photos and encyclopedia of information are wonderful on this site.

The administrators of this Atlantic City Facebook Page do an incredible job.

Early this morning, I saw this photo. Look how many fishing opportunities were available in Atlantic City in 1957.

While the above ad is about 1957, I also want to take this opportunity to share some amazing history about both Absecon Island and Atlantic City.

The history of Atlantic City as a fishing town runs deep.

The first to live on Absecon Island was The Lenni-Lenape Indians. They spent summers here (migrating from The Mainland) at what is Florida Avenue, today.

There was an abundance of food available in the ocean and bay.

Thomas Budd is officially listed as the first official owner of Absecon Island in the late 1670s.

In those days, Mainland properties were valued at 40 cents per acre, and the beach land sold for 4 cents per acre.

Can you believe that? An acre today is worth millions of dollars.

The Lenni-Lenape Indians and other early Mainland settlers would visit Absecon Island for the next 100 years to hunt and fish.

Among those early rugged individuals was Jeremiah Leeds.

Leeds was the first white man to build a permanent structure on Absecon Island, doing so in 1785 at what is now Arctic and Arkansas Avenues.

Jeremiah Leeds and his family are the first residents of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Discovery Center at Point Breeze opens May 20

Officials will unveil circa 1819 painting of Joseph Bonaparte in its original frame that has never before been seen in public

D&R Greenway Land Trust welcomes community members to the public opening of the new Discovery Center at Point Breeze on Saturday, May 20 from 1- 5 p.m.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. in front of the paneled mahogany doors at the entrance to the Discovery Center, 101 Park St., Bordentown.

Barbara “Blue Jay” Michalski will offer a Lenape blessing. Bordentown City Mayor Jennifer Sciortino will be joined with state and local dignitaries to cut the ribbon, along with D&R Greenway President and CEO Linda Mead who oversaw the design of the new museum.

“The two years it took to renovate the 200-year-old house, that was lived in by nuns and priests for the past 80 years, was a flash compared to the property’s 13,000 years of history,” Mead said. “It was a flash that has now put the Bordentown community on the world stage, with a welcoming place full of stories and discoveries that will delight history lovers, nature buffs, and artists alike.”

Preservation of the former estate of Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte, exiled King of Spain and older brother of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte of France, by the state, City of Bordentown and D&R Greenway in 2020, was heralded in the New York Times, the Times of London and the Spanish News Service.

Following two years of renovations by D&R Greenway, the land trust is opening the former Gardener’s House, the only remaining structure from the Bonaparte era. Guests will be treated to stories of the Crown Jewels, archaeological displays and a circa 1819 painting of Joseph Bonaparte in its original frame that has never before been seen in public.

Lambertville a small city jam-packed with history, heart

Lambertville, with a population of around 4,000 is supposedly one of the smallest cities in the U.S. It is unclear what justifies its claim to be a city. In the U.K. by contrast, a place can only be called a city by royal proclamation and typically it would have a large population and a cathedral. Lambertville is really a village but it does have five active churches of different denominations dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, built before there were distractions like TV.

The area was originally settled by the Lenape, centered mainly in the Delaware River valley. The river’s name was Lenapewimittuk, meaning the largest river in this part of the country. The Lenape tribe lived in villages along the banks and tributaries. It is estimated that there were 10,000 to 12,000 tribe members living in 30 to 50 communities. The women farmed mainly corn, squash and beans, while the men hunted and fished (shad, when in season).

The location by the Delaware River is certainly an important reason for the original settlement. Water from the river was initially a major source of power. There were also a number locally available raw materials such as wood from the forests, grain from the bountiful countryside, coal from the earth and abundant stone from what became quarries.

During the Industrial Revolution era, industry flourished, including milling of grain and feed, as well as manufacture of silk, paper, rubber products and pottery.

In the 1830s, canals on both sides of the Delaware were built with great effort by mainly Irish immigrants, many of whom died of cholera. When the canals were completed, raw materials and merchandise were transported in long barges, pulled by mules walking along parallel towpaths. At one time, 3,000 mule-drawn boats plied the canals….
