This week in Connecticut arts features a very high percentage of performers who kicked off their careers in their teens and are still going strong.
There’s child actor-turned-pop star Jesse McCartney, style-shifting country/rap phenom Kidd G, Ricky Montgomery, (who has moved from social media to other media), LeAnn Rimes (who had her first country hit at 13), and Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, who released his first album at 19 and was playing on a George Harrison record at 22.
Stephen Sanchez, who’s headlining at Mohegan Sun Arena, is just 21 and released his first EP three years ago. Billy Bragg, performing at District Music Hall in Norwalk, was around 20 when he formed his first band but has stuck around a long time as a solo artist. His “Roaring Forties” mimics an anthology album that collects his work from 1983 to 2023.
Finally, there are some animated characters coming to Connecticut this week, from Bluey to Pinkalicious, who remain children but have been entertaining other children for decades.

Haunting video has revealed a college student’s final moments before he collapsed and died while celebrating his graduation at a casino in Connecticut.
Ethan Bherwani, 22, from Long Island, was with two friends at the Mohegan Sun casino in May 2021 when he made the devastating decision to purchase cocaine from a dealer in the bathroom.
Unbeknown to him the cocaine was laced with the lethal drug fentanyl, which caused him to keel over at the blackjack table just moments later.
Surveillance footage showed him wearing a hat and face mask while playing cards before he fell unconscious and collapsed onto the floor where he remained motionless.
His friends were not there as they had already gone to bed. Other people can be seen glancing over at him but continued to play cards. Two other bystanders then run over to him to attempt to provide aid but appear to be waved away by a staff member. It took five minutes for someone to call for an EMT and 11 minutes before paramedics arrived and performed life-saving measures.
Ethan was eventually transported to hospital but died nine days later on May 27, 2021 – just days before his graduation ceremony at Baruch College in New York.
His heartbroken father, Kamal Bherwani, 55, has spent the last three years fighting for justice after it emerged the drug dealer who sold his son the deadly cocaine, Jerrard Santiago, was prolific in the area and had been banned from the casino years earlier.

When former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar Caitlin Clark was drafted to the Indiana Fever with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, there were questions about how Clark would assimilate into her new team.
The extremely strong bonds that Clark had with Iowa teammates Kate Martin, Gabbie Marshall, and others seemed to be a big reason for Iowa’s success. Because of this, some fans wondered if Clark would only reach her potential in professional basketball if she built friendships on the Fever.
Luckily, that’s exactly what the 22-year-old did with Fever teammate Lexie Hull.
Clark and Hull have been spotted at numerous off-court events together and went viral earlier this week after Hull posted a TikTok where she and Clark reviewed drinks they received from a local café called ‘Swig’.

At one point in that video, the owner of Swig could be heard telling Clark and Hull he wanted to give them a “golden mug,” which meant that, “every time you come through Swig, you just get a free refill.”

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Vince Carter remembers the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest like it just happened, when he went from an up-and-comer to a full-fledged phenom.
He had been the NBA Rookie of the Year the season before with Toronto and now he was a first-time All-Star. But when he slammed the ball down in Oakland, leaping so high with such force that he put his arm through the rim, he had created perhaps the biggest highlight of a Hall of Fame career that would last another 20 years.
“What the dunk contest did for me, overnight it changed my life,” Carter said Saturday during a press conference at Mohegan Sun Casino to discuss his induction.
Some players have careers like that, where they seem to hit the ground running from the moment they are drafted and never stop — in Carter’s case until he had played an NBA-record 22 seasons.

And then there are guys like Chauncey Billups.
The No. 3 pick in the 1997 draft was traded by Boston in his first season and had already played for four teams in his first four seasons.
There’s more than one way to reach the Hall of Fame.
Billups eventually found his footing and on Sunday will join Carter as the headline names in the 13-member class that will be enshrined in Springfield, Massachusetts, not far from where his first NBA stop went so poorly that some labeled him a bust.

Mohegan CEO Ray Pineault’s phone was ringing off the hook in the early days of May.
Executives, cohorts and friends were clamoring to get tickets to watch Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark’s pro debut against the Connecticut Sun, which is owned by the Mohegan tribe, a Native American group that manages and owns entertainment resorts in the United States and Canada. He was the bearer of bad news, as the May 14 season opener sold out faster than any home game in the Sun’s 25-year franchise history. It was one of 11 sellouts that the WNBA franchise had this season, including Wednesday’s series-clinching 87-81 win over Clark and the Fever in the first round of the playoffs.
“Kudos to her, she’s a fantastic player,” Pineault said. “You can see the statistics. But we also have fantastic players on our team who have shown their mettle, strength and competitiveness on the court.”
The Sun, with year-to-year increases in nearly all business categories from group sales to TV viewership, look to capture their first WNBA championship as they ride the momentum from the league’s banner year. The first pro sports team to be owned by a Native American tribe has reached the WNBA Finals four times but is still chasing that elusive title. The semifinals-bound team hopes to finally get over the hump this year, all while playing a pivotal role in the overall business strategy for Mohegan.
