Lamont Says CT Sports Betting Starting Soon, But There’s A Catch

Gov. Ned Lamont is ready for CT sports betting to get started, but he might have jumped the gun a bit in recent comments.

Lamont said sports betting could begin “any day now” at the two tribal casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

“My instinct is the tribes, hopefully, will do something collaboratively at the same time on site, and we’re just waiting for the final approval so we can get everything going online as well,” Lamont added.

While some local media took Lamont’s comments to mean CT sports betting could launch this week, that likely is not the case.

CT sports betting still has steps to take

The federal Department of Interior gave its blessing on updated gaming agreements between the state and its two tribal partners last week.

Those agreements must appear in the Federal Register to take effect, though. Lamont’s office assumed that would happen the same day the approvals arrived, a spokesperson said.

It will take about a week to square away all the licensing issues before those retail bets can happen after publishing, the spokesperson added.

The state’s three online sportsbooks should still launch simultaneously in October:

Connecticut another legal option for Massachusetts bettors

There is another group of bettors eagerly waiting for the launch of sports betting in Connecticut: Massachusetts residents.

The Massachusetts Senate is again holding up the discussion on legalizing sportsbooks in the Bay State. Its proposed bill was not updated following a stakeholder meeting in June. The House, meanwhile, amended its bill and passed it by a 156-3 margin.

Gov. Charlie Baker is growing impatient as well. He tweeted Sunday it’s time to get Massachusetts sportsbooks legalized, adding the state is losing out to many neighbors. So far, Massachusetts has three neighboring states that accept…

One Connecticut-Tribal Gaming Compact Set To Be Published

The gaming compact between the state of Connecticut and the Mohegan Tribe is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, meaning it will become operational as the tribe and other stakeholders continue to move closer to a firm sports betting launch date. Notice of the publishing was made public on the Federal Register website Tuesday morning. As of 1 p.m. ET, there was no notice about when the compact between the state and the Mashantucket Pequots would be published. Both pacts were approved by the U.S. Department of the Interior last Thursday.

Both tribes and the Connecticut Lottery will offer legal sports wagering and iGaming, and have said they have plans to go live next month. The Mohegans, who own and operate the Mohegan Sun Casino, are partnered with FanDuel; the Mashantucket Pequots, who own and operate the Foxwoods Casino, are partnered with DraftKings; and the Connecticut Lottery last month selected Rush Street Interactive as its partner.

The state will have three digital sports wagering operators after the tribes agreed to allow the lottery to have a digital sports betting platform and up to 15 retail locations. The lottery cannot offer iGaming.

A few more steps on path to go-live

There are still some steps remaining before any operators can go live — the state’s Department of Consumer Protection must issue supplier and vendor licenses, and operators must send the department a request to go live. According to the law, operators must alert the DCP 10 days in advance of when they want to go live, and then will enter a seven-day soft-launch period.

“We’re continuing to work through licensing details with the state Department of Consumer Protection, and waiting for the Department of Interior to publish its approvals,” Mashantucket…

Key hurdles cleared to allow final cleanup of former Norwich Hospital property to restart

Preston — A key breakthrough has been reached among town, state and Mohegan tribal leaders that could mean bulldozers can start rolling again by the end of November in the final cleanup of the former Norwich Hospital property.

The Preston Redevelopment Agency on Tuesday approved a term sheet that outlines the complex contractual agreement between the state Department of Economic and Community Development, the town of Preston and the Mohegan tribe, which will take over ownership of the property for a major redevelopment once the cleanup is completed.

The agreement must be approved by the Board of Selectmen, which will vote on it Thursday. That move would launch a final Financial Assistance Proposal, which all parties also must approve, along with a town meeting vote to accept a $7 million state grant for the cleanup. PRA Chairman Sean Nugent explained the agreements to the agency Tuesday.

The town previously had secured a $2 million loan toward the cleanup, bringing the final funding to $9 million.

The agreement clears up issues surrounding the cleanup, as well as how to pay for it, Nugent said.

Another problem had been that the cleanup deviates from state norms in that the tribe could not propose a final development plan until it owns the property, but the state normally requires a final development plan before approving a cleanup process. Instead, the parties agreed that the town would spend the first $5 million of cleanup funds, and the remaining $4 million, including the town loan if needed, will be placed in escrow to be used after the property is transferred to the tribe and specific development proposed.

With all the pieces nearly in place, Nugent said the PRA could secure town permits for the final cleanup and use the less than $1 million in previous state grant money to restart…

Connecticut Tribal Gaming Compacts Receive Federal Approval

  • Last Week, the US Dept. of the Interior Approved Revised CT Tribal Gaming Compacts
  • Connecticut Sports Bettors Will Have Three Sportsbook Options
  • Legal Sports Betting in Connecticut on Track for October Launch Date

Play Fantasy Sports, Here!

Last Week, the US Dept. of the Interior Approved Revised CT Tribal Gaming Compacts

Late last week, Governor Ned Lamont, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Chairman Rodney Butler, and Mohegan Tribal Council Chairman James Gessner Jr. announced that the US Department of the Interior had approved the proposed revisions to the state’s tribal gaming compacts.

This marks the final step towards launching legal sports betting in Connecticut, a tedious process that started back in May 2021 once Gov. Lamont signed HB6451 into law after the state Legislature approved it in a late-night session.

The compacts describe in detail a sports gambling operation that includes a 13.75% tax rate on retail sports betting and an 18% tax rate on all online gambling for the first five years (increased to 20% after that), revenue that will go a long way to improving the lives of Nutmeg State residents.

Gov. Lamont thanked the Bureau of Indian Affairs for approving these revisions and made it clear that he is counting on his state’s sports betting operation to compete nationwide.

This critical step in the process of modernizing our gaming landscape here in Connecticut ensures that our state will have a competitive, nation-leading marketplace for wagering both in-person and online.

Connecticut Sports Bettors Will Have Three Sportsbook Options

Once operations are set up, there will be three sportsbook options for Connecticut bettors to choose from:

According to Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Chairman Rodney Butler, the benefits of this new partnership are threefold:

This expansion will allow us to enhance investments in support…

Connecticut Internet Gaming Rules Approved and Effective

By Jennifer Newell

September 8th, 2021 | Last updated on September 8th, 2021

Home » Poker News » Connecticut Internet Gaming Rules Approved and Effective Connecticut Internet Gaming Rules Approved and Effective

Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill’s website indicates that igaming regulations are in full effect. The “regulation making record” pertains to online casino gaming, retail and online sports wagering, fantasy contests, keno, and the online sale of lottery tickets. And included in the online casino gaming is peer-to-peer gaming, which is online poker.

What this means is that the regulatory structure for everything from licensing to responsible gambling protocols is done. The governor and state legislature approved them.

The next step is for the action to begin. Some of the work for sports betting operators has already been done, and land-based operators appear ready to launch.

It seems that only one approval is still pending. The United States Government’s Bureau of Indian Affairs, which is a part of the US Department of the Interior, must approve the updated compacts with the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut and Mashantucket Pequot Tribe.

It’s almost there…

Regulations Done

Thus far, the process has been fairly quick, especially by the standards set by other states and their igaming processes to date. Connecticut had been discussing online gaming and sports betting legalization for years, but the legislature finally approved a bill this year. And when Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed it into law on May 27, 2021, the biggest hurdles were in the past.

The next move was up to Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill’s office. Under her oversight, the state’s Department of Consumer Protections and Commissioner Michelle Seagull set about drafting emergency regulations for the new industry. State-regulated online gaming, sports betting, fantasy sports, keno, and online lottery ticket sales…
