Tracking The NA Cup Contenders

Published: August 25, 2021 2:53 pm ET

With eliminations for the Pepsi North America Cup just over a week away, Trot Insider has provided a final update on where contenders are racing heading into the $1 million event.

The 38th edition of the $1 million Pepsi North America Cup for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Woodbine Mohawk Park. The eliminations will be held a week prior on Saturday, Sept. 4.

For many years, TROT Magazine’s Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book has served as an initial barometer for the colts and geldings that may be in the running for the Glamour Boy division’s single biggest payday. As in past years, the Spring Book appeared in the April Horseplayers issue of TROT.

David Spade Warns Wokeness Is Killing Comedy: ‘One Wrong Move and You’re Canceled’

Actor and comedian David Spade warned in a recent interview that wokeness is killing comedy. “One wrong move and you’re canceled,” the Grown Ups star and Saturday Night Live alum said of being a comedian in the age of cancel culture.

“It’s very dicey. It’s very tricky. You used to have to say anything to go as far as you could, to push the envelope, to get attention, and people would be like, ‘I like this guy. He’s pushing it.’ And in comedy clubs, audiences really appreciate that,” Spade told Variety. “Now you say the one wrong move and you’re canceled. It’s a very tough world out there.”

“I think all the comedians have gotten together, in a way, to say we just have to keep doing what we were doing, and the people that come to the shows will appreciate it,” he added.

Spade also suggested that comedians are typically canceled after an “outsider” comes into a comedy club and decides they are offended after a show.

“But you get an outsider that comes in and goes, ‘I was so offended,’” he said.

“The intent is not to be mean,” Spade continued. “If the intent is to do it as a joke or a spin on something, and it is mean to people, but you’re just making fun of that, I don’t think that’s horrible.”

“I’ve been in the business doing it for 20 years, so I hope comics are allowed to be comics. I really hope so,” the comedian added.

Spade has been one of the recent celebrity guest hosts to replace longtime host Chris Harrison on ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise.

Mark Brown seeking to return to Mohegan Tribal Council in ongoing voting

Mohegan — Mark Brown, the former long-serving Mohegan Tribal Council member who lost a 2019 reelection bid and then won a special election that later was invalidated and lost the do-over, is seeking to return to the council in ongoing voting among tribal members.

The voting concludes Sunday.

Brown confirmed this week he is among the candidates for five seats up for election to the nine-member council, which oversees tribal government and serves as the management board of Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, which operates the tribe’s gaming enterprises, including Mohegan Sun, its flagship casino.

Four incumbents — Chairman James Gessner Jr., Sarah Harris, William Quidgeon Jr. and Ken Davison — are seeking new, four-year terms. A fifth incumbent, Kathy Regan-Pyne, is not running for reelection.

A field of candidates was narrowed to 10 in primary voting earlier this year. In addition to the four incumbents, the other candidates are Brown, Bethany Seidel, Kim Strickland, Brian Bozsum, Chris Friday and David Rubino.

Brown, who served as council chairman from 2000 to 2005, was nearing the end of his sixth term when he lost his bid for a seventh in August 2019. Less than four months later, he won a special election held to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of his brother, former Chairman Kevin Brown. Mark Brown won the special election in a three-way race, edging Davison by a single vote.

Davison and another tribal member challenged the result, filing suit in tribal court and petitioning the tribe’s election committee and its elders’ council. They claimed the vote should be invalidated because tribal members had not been properly notified in advance that voting hours had been shortened, costing Davison two votes. The elders’ council, the tribe’s ultimate judicial authority, invalidated the special election and scheduled a new vote, which…

Sun shut down Aces again to clinch playoff berth

Mohegan — It was news to Connecticut Sun head coach Curt Miller when he found out over an hour before Tuesday night’s game that his team would clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Las Vegas Aces.

Miller said he wasn’t going to tell his team.

He lied.

“Trust me, he made us aware,” the Sun’s DeWanna Bonner said with a grin. “We were like, ‘OK, we just want to win.’”

The Sun went out and once again got the league’s highest-scoring team stuck in mud. They won 76-62 in a battle between first-place teams to sweep the three-game regular-season series with the Aces before 4,012 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Connecticut (18-6) its sixth straight game, a season high. It was also the third time this season it held Las Vegas under 70 points. The latter had averaged a league-high 90.5 points.

“So proud of our effort, our tenacity, our toughness tonight against an elite team,” Miller said. “They play at the fastest pace. They’re the league-leaders in points in the paint You name it, offensively, analytically, they’re the best in the league. And they have great depth.

“For us to hold them again in the 60s is just a credit to how hard we play (defensively).”

Connecticut also took sole control of first place after the Minnesota Lynx knocked off the defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm 76-70. The Sun has a one-game lead over both teams with eight games to go.

Seattle swept the Sun this season.

Bonner scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half along with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals for Connecticut.

Briann January had the hot hand in the first half for the Sun. She scored 12 of her season-high 19 in that half and added three steals.

Brionna Jones had 15 points, eight rebounds…

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment Withdraw from Japan’s IR Pursuit Citing Unethical Conduct

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment has revealed details of its sudden withdrawal from its pursuit for an integrated resort (IR) license in Japan.

Mohegan Gaming, which is a gaming unit of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, said that Oshidori International Development decided to abandon the Nagasaki consortium’s ambitions

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment CEO Ray Pineault said Oshidori decided due to the significant financial impact of the pursuit.

“This decision was made solely by Oshidori and does not have any significant financial impact on us, as we were providing operational expertise and assistance for the request for proposal process and did not anticipate any meaningful cash flow or expenses related to this project.”

Mohegan is not the only global gaming casino firm that has abandoned ongoing Japan’s IR pursue. Las Vegas Sands shocked the industry in March when it withdrew from pursuing Japan’s IR permit.

Late Sands founder Sheldon Adelson cited development issues that made IR goal unreachable.

Wynn Resorts and Caesars Entertainment also withdrew from bidding for Japan’s casino license. MGM is the only major gaming entity that is actively pursuing the Osaka IR license. However, MGM has reduced its investment state that it previously planned.

Mohegan Gaming which has casino resorts in the US, Canada, and South Korea was not considered the highest bidder for the Nagasaki prefecture license. After the Oshidori revelation, Nagasaki also announced their pick for an IR partner-Casino Austria.

The Nagasaki government said that Casino Austria scored 697.0 points while Mohegan scored 682.8 points. Oshidori claimed that the rating was flawed, and added that they only sought to partake in an ethical IR process.

Bellator 264 predictions — Gegard Mousasi vs. John Salter: Fight card, start time, odds, expert picks, stream

The Bellator cage returns to Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on Friday for Bellator 264. The card is headlined by Gegard Mousasi defending his middleweight championship against John Salter.

Mousasi won the Bellator middleweight title for a second time in his most recent outing, taking a unanimous decision victory over Douglas Lima this past October. The victory was the second consecutive win for the Strikeforce and UFC veteran and came two fights after a majority decision loss to Rafael Lovato Jr. that ended Mousasi’s first run as Bellator champ.

The loss to Lovato is Mousasi’s only loss since 2016, a stretch that includes 11 fights across both Bellator and the UFC.

Salter is also a UFC veteran, though his Octagon career came to a close after just three fights, all in 2010. Since that 1-2 stint in the UFC, Salter has compiled a 13-2 record, including going 8-1 in the Bellator cage. Like Mousasi, Salter’s lone Bellator loss came against Lovato.

Can’t get enough boxing and MMA? Get the latest in the world of combat sports from two of the best in the business. Subscribe to Morning Kombat with Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell for the best analysis and in-depth news.

Salter earned his shot at Mousasi and the title with a three-fight winning streak, most recently defeating Andrew Kapel by submission in August 2020. That finish continued Salter’s impressive trend of avoiding the judges’ scorecards, with only one of his 22 career fights going to decision.

Four other fights fill out the undercard on Friday night, including some interesting contests in the welterweight and bantamweight divisions. Former champion Andrey Koreshkov is back in action when he faces Sabah Homasi in the co-main event at 170 pounds. Koreshkov has not fought for the promotion since October 2019. Plus, Magomed Magomedov and Raufeon Stots…
