SCRANTON — Future protesters at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza can be loud and vulgar, but only behind barricades, a federal judge ruled.

The decision settled an unresolved issue in a five-year-old case brought by animal rights activist Silvie Pomicter and the Last Chance for Animals group who challenged the restrictions imposed on them while protesting the former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus shows at the arena in Wilkes-Barre Township.

A federal appeals court reversed a lower court ruling and found the location restriction imposed by the arena owner, the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority and its then management company SMG, was reasonable.

But the appellate court left it up to U.S. District Judge Robert Mariani of Scranton to determine how the policy of sequestering protesters squared with the Pennsylvania Constitution, noting the state provided a broader constitutional protection of freedom of expression than the federal guarantee.

The parties in the case agreed the policies enacted…

A woman’s heart stopped before a Blake Shelton show at Mohegan Sun. A nearby nurse acted.

NORWICH – What was supposed to be a pleasant night of music and slots for two families turned dire after a Massachusetts woman suffered a seizure so severe it stopped her heart and lungs.

But Sandra Swenor said without the timely intervention of a Hartford Healthcare nurse, it could have been so much worse.

Swenor, a 60-year-old Springfield, Massachusetts resident, traveled to the Mohegan Sun Casino on Friday night to watch country superstar Blake Shelton take the stage. She drove down with her mother and the two settled into a suite while waiting for extended family members to show up.

“It was a great day,” Swenor said. “We played slots, had a big room and ate dinner. I love Blake Shelton.”

As she waited in the gaming area for the show to begin, Swenor, a diabetic, said she began feeling odd.

“I got dizzy and foggy,” she said on Wednesday from her bed inside The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich. “I could hear, but not understand what I was hearing. I thought it was anxiety. And that’s the last thing I remember.”

Winning tickets put nurse in the right place at the right time

A few feet away, Cindy Edwards, a regional supervising nurse who worked at both Backus and Windham hospitals, was out with her husband, also waiting for Shelton to perform, courtesy of a pair of tickets they’d won.

“My husband turned to me and said ‘That woman is having a seizure,’” Edwards said.

Looking back, looking forward: After 25 years in Connecticut, what’s next for Mohegan Sun?

Edwards, a 44-year-old East Haddam resident who cut her teeth as an EMT in Ledyard and emergency room nurse, rushed to Swenor’s side and identified herself as a nurse. As Swenor slumped over, Edwards guided her down and began her assessment.

“The…

Connecticut Officially Launches Retail Sports Betting Monday

CT Lottery launches retail sportsbooks.

 • Sports Haven officially became the first retail sportsbook in Connecticut after Gov. Ned Lamont placed the first bet at the grand opening on Monday.
 • Connecticut has already successfully launched their online sports betting industry, and more retail sportsbooks are expected to open in the following weeks.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The first retail sportsbook in Connecticut, Sports Haven, opened in conjunction with the Connecticut Lottery on Monday in New Haven.

The launch of the retail sportsbook comes a week after the successful launch of Connecticut’s online sports betting industry.

Governor Ned Lamont, as well as other notable Connecticut leaders, were present at the grand opening event Monday afternoon. Gov. Lamont placed the first bet at Sports Haven, a $20 wager on the New York Giants over the Kansas City Chiefs next weekend.

Gov. Lamont says that Connecticut’s newly regulated and legalized sports betting industry is a fun addition to the state economy.

The president of the Connecticut Lottery, Greg Smith, expects the new industry to lead to record tax revenues from the lottery, which contributed about $400 million yearly to the State General Fund even prior to the expansion of the sports betting industry.

The tax rate on sports betting revenue in Connecticut is 13.75%.

Smith says that retail sports betting venues at Bobby V’s Restaurant & Sports Bar locations in Stamford and Windsor Locks will start accepting wagers in the following days, which will bring more options to sports bettors.

Lamont placed the first in-person sports wager at the Mohegan-owned Mohegan Sun on Sept. 30, which marked the beginning of the limited launch of the sports betting industry in Connecticut. Lamont then layed a wager at the nearby Pequot-owned Foxwoods Resorts Casino. A soft launch…

December’s Bellator 272 card continues to grow, with a welterweight fight the latest addition.

Sources confirmed to Cageside Press on Wednesday that Vinicius De Jesus (9-4) will face Levan Chokheli (9-1, 1NC) at the event, which will see the promotion return to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT.

Setanta Sport’s Giorgi Kokiashvili was first to report the news.

Georgia’s Chokheli made his promotional debut at Bellator 260 earlier this year, suffering the first loss of his career against Kyle Crutchmer. Starting his pro career in 2016, Chokheli ran up an impressive win streak on the regional circuit, and is the latest in a wave of Georgian fighters to storm the major promotions.

De Jesus will be stepping into the cage for the first time this year, having competed in grappling of late. In 2020, he lost back-to-back fights under the Bellator and LFA banners, and will look to halt that losing streak against Chokheli. Overall, the Brazilian is 3-2 under the Bellator banner, and is also a former CES MMA welterweight champion.

Bellator 272 takes place December 3, 2021 at the Mohegan…

Jason Tartick Dishes on His Upcoming Wedding to Kaitlyn Bristowe, Including His Non-Negotiable Asks (EXCLUSIVE)

While the success rate for the couples who get engaged on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette isn’t particularly high, several pairs from the franchise have gotten together and forged strong relationships off the show.

Former lead Kaitlyn Bristowe and Bachelorette Season 14 fan favorite Jason Tartick didn’t cross paths in front of the cameras. Instead, they met in early 2019 when Jason appeared on Kaitlyn’s podcast, Off the Vine, to discuss his time on The Bachelorette.

Following the podcast appearance, the reality stars began dating, and they’ve since chronicled their relationship milestones on social media.

Fast-forward to 2021, and Jason proposed while the two were recording another episode of the podcast.

Now, the beloved Bachelor Nation duo is in the throes of planning their wedding — amidst Kaitlyn’s Bachelorette co-hosting duties and as Jason continues to host his own podcast, Trading Secrets.

Distractify spoke exclusively with Jason at Mohegan Sun’s 25th anniversary party at TAO Mohegan Sun about his wedding plans, and he shared how he really felt about being named in Ryan Fox’s Bachelorette playbook.

Jason Tartick and Kaitlyn Bristowe are ironing out their wedding details, and they have “an idea” of when they’ll say “I do.”

Though the couple have taken a few months to soak in the excitement of their engagement, Jason and Kaitlyn have now started planning their upcoming nuptials.

The pair had a lot to think about when it came to selecting a venue. The Bachelorette alums reside together in Nashville, but Jason is a proud Buffalo native, while Kaitlyn originally hails from Canada.

Article continues below advertisement

“We are thinking Nashville now but we are still looking at other venues,” Jason shared exclusively with Distractify, before discussing their ideal date. “We are thinking later next year. We haven’t actually set an exact date but we have an idea……

Thousands of online, sports bets placed on Conn.’s 1st day

Thousands of virtual bets started being placed early Tuesday, the first day that online sports wagering and casino games were made available to all eligible adults within Connecticut.

Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino, called it “nothing short of historic” for the state and the tribe, which received its federal recognition 30 years ago this week and has been seeking to expand into online gambling for almost a decade as competition for casino patrons has ramped up throughout the Northeast.

“It really expands the ecosystem of gaming and the combination of in-person and online just extends that experience,” he told reporters during a virtual news conference.

He said the first wager was placed on the Los Angeles Dodgers defeating the Atlanta Braves, followed by thousands of other fans who placed bets on a variety of games.

Besides Foxwoods, which has partnered with operator DraftKings, online sports betting was fully launched by the Mohegan Tribe, owners of Mohegan Sun Casino, and its partner FanDuel, and the Connecticut Lottery Corp. and its partner Rush Street Interactive. Only the two tribes are allowed to offer online casino games.

With Tuesday’s full rollout of online gambling, following a seven-day, limited “soft launch,” Connecticut becomes the seventh state to offer online betting on casino games, ranging from various forms of blackjack to video poker and roulette. More than two dozen states have legalized sports betting, although many only allow in-person bets.

Kevin Hennessy, director of publicity for FanDuel, said things ran smoothly on Tuesday on the Mohegan Sun/FanDuel platform. Like with Foxwoods, the first bet…

The 5 Most Popular Sports Teams for Connecticut Fans to Start Betting on

The 5 Most Popular Sports Teams for Connecticut Fans to Start Betting on

© USA Today

Legal Connecticut sports betting sites just went live on Tuesday Oct. 19, following a seven-day soft launch, that started on Tuesday.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun opened their retail sportsbooks on Sept. 30 without any issues and the online sports betting soft launch started off smoothly, according to a state spokesperson.

With that being the case, you’ll soon be able to bet on your favorite teams and more at DraftKings Sportsbook, the Moheagan Sun partners and with FanDuel Sportsbook, the Foxwood partner and SugarHouse Sportsbook, the partner of the state lottery.

One thing to note is that there are rules regarding college sports. You can bet on college teams, but not those based in Connecticut. Therefore, you won’t be able to bet on the UConn Huskies or Sacred Heart’s ice hockey team, for example. The only exception is if those teams are in bracketed tournaments, including the NCAA basketball tournament. So when March Madness arrives, take the Huskies if you want.

With that said, here are five teams on which Connecticut bettors could be interested in placing some wagers.

New England Patriots

It’s not always cool to root for the Patriots. However, they’re part of the New England collective. After winning their last Super Bowl in 2019, the Patriots have rebuilt and are now led by rookie quarterback Mac Jones. With Connecticut online sports betting set to go live before…

Online Gambling Starts Today

Starting at 6 a.m. today residents across the state will have a casino in their pockets. That’s because residents will have access to three different online gambling platforms, two operated by the tribes and one by the Connecticut Lottery.

The Connecticut Lottery Corporation in partnership with Rush Street Interactive will begin taking bets via PlaySugarHouse.com, the Mohegan Tribal Nation will take bets via FanDuel and the Mashantucket Pequots will be taking bets via DraftKings.

More than 130 games have been approved by the Department of Consumer Protection for both the FanDuel and DraftKings apps.

Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle Seagull said that anyone over the age of 21 can set up an account with any or all of the three vendors and start placing their bets.

“We want to make sure that people underage are not allowed to set up accounts,” Seagull said.

Seagull said they didn’t have any problems during the seven-day soft launch of online sports betting and there have been a few people who signed up for the self-exclusion list – these are individuals who don’t want to be marketed to, most often because they know they have a gambling addiction.

Seagull said she doesn’t have an exact number of people who excluded themselves, but making sure the vendors don’t allow anyone under the age of 21 to set up an account, and that they do respect those who have excluded themselves, are some of the things her agency will be…
