A Red Storm wreaks havoc at the Mohegan Sun Winter Championships

The shooting touch of Tyler August and tenacious team defense and rebounding led the Monroe Red Storm to victory in the seventh grade division of the Mohegan Sun Winter Championships last weekend.

In the first half, August made four three-pointers for his travel basketball team, helping Monroe build an early lead against Agawam, Mass., in the championship game Sunday Night.

Agawam chipped away at the Red Storm’s lead, pulling to within one point before Johnny Angelopoulos drew a foul and sunk two free throws to ice the game and Monroe’s 34-31 triumph with four seconds to go.

“I told the team after the game that I am proud of them for the energy and tenacity they play with on the court, but more importantly that the bond and appreciation they truly have for one another is what sets them apart,” Head Coach Jay Farrer said during a telephone interview Tuesday night.

Farrer said the 12 teammates, who all go to Jockey Hollow Middle School, spent a lot of time together at the casino and swimming. All of the families went out to dinner together on Saturday night, and Farrer said the boys had their arms around each other while they ate.

Monroe won all four games in the tournament, which was sponsored by Vertical Hoops.

On Saturday, the Red Storm beat Brookfield 34-17 and the Norwalk Youth Club 47-20. Then they beat Brookfield again, 35-17 in the semifinals Sunday to advance to the championship game.

Farrer said his team was the number one seed in the tournament, which mostly featured Connecticut teams, but also teams from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Quebec.

PENGUINS FELLED IN OVERTIME BY PHANTOMS, 4-3

BOXSCORE

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – On a snowy Saturday night in Northeast Pennsylvania, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lost in overtime to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, 4-3, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (17-12-4-0) built a two-goal lead, but Phantoms forward Samu Tuomaala started the comeback in the third period and later finished it in overtime.

Tuomaala was set up by Louie Belpedio for a blistering one-timer from the bottom of the left circle, resulting in the game-winner 90 seconds into OT.

Matt Filipe notched the night’s first goal, tipping in a point shot by Jack St. Ivany at 12:19 of the first period. However, Lehigh Valley responded 97 seconds later with an equalizer from Cooper Marody.

Both teams started to pile-up scoring chances during a fast-paced second period, but it wasn’t until there was 3:03 left in the frame that either team lit the lamp. Ultimately, Alex Nylander put the Penguins back ahead, 2-1, with a short-side snipe.

St. Ivany picked up his second assist of the game early in the third period, when another one of his shots was swatted down by teammate Peter Abbandonato, who then gathered the puck and shuffled it across the goal line.

Tuomala sparked the Phantoms’ rally with a laser beam off the rush at 8:32 of the third period. Seventy-two seconds later, Ronnie Attard tied things up, 3-3.

Penguins goalie Magnus Hellberg finished the night with 29 saves on 33 shots faced. Phantoms netminder Felix Sandström recorded 25 saves in the win.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton gets right back at it for its next game tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 7, when the Hartford Wolf Pack come to town. Sunday’s game is slated for a 3:05 p.m. start at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Season-ticket packages for the Penguins’ 25th season of hockey are on…

Arena Authority seeks grant to complete parking lot project

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — At special meeting on Wednesday, the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority unanimously approved making application for a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant for improvement to the parking lot outside Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Donna Cupinski, Chair of the authority board, said the authority will apply for a $1.4 million RCAP grant make safety improvements and pave the lot.

Cupinski said the authority hopes to use all or part of its Local Share Account allocation to cover the $1.4 million matching requirement for the $2.8 million project.

“We have to check to see what our LSA allocation will be and if we can use it for our required match for the project,” Cupinski said.

Cupinski also noted that consulting firm Ashburn Advisers of Lackawanna County has agreed to prepare the application and will provide the $500 application fee.

Cupinski was the only board member at the arena for the meeting. Other board members attended via phone: Dino Galella, Frank Orloski Jr., Patrick Patte, John Pickering, Lori Spencer, John Ruckno and Tom Woods.

Executive Director Steve Poremba was in attendance, as was Carrie Grantuskas, finance director.

Indy Q&A: Head of Virgin Hotels LV management is ‘guy that brings everyone together’

Among his first acts after being named president of the management company that oversees the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in August, Cliff Atkinson wanted to meet jointly with representatives from the 29 entities that operate businesses inside the off-Strip resort.

What might have first seemed like herding cats became a rally session as Atkinson, 49, jumped into a familiar role — ensuring the diverse companies overseeing the hotel, casino, restaurants, bars, lounges and retail inside Virgin were working in harmony to make the most of the huge business opportunity roughly three months away.

Virgin’s location along Harmon Avenue — less than 1 mile east of the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix headquarters — was an opportunity that wasn’t around when the property reopened in March 2021 following 20 months of renovations. The $500 million Grand Prix building was the centerpiece for the three days of racing, with high-priced grandstand seating, luxury suites, the start-finish line and pit row garages.

“We knew there were going to be 50,000 people. That was almost the size of Allegiant Stadium less than a mile from our front doors,” said Atkinson, who previously served as president of Luxor Hotel and Casino. “We needed to have the property ready for that event.”

Virgin’s rideshare lot at Harmon and Paradise Road became the pickup and drop-off location for Grand Prix attendees. Space in the property that housed the center bar when the building was known as Hard Rock Las Vegas was “reactivated” from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. daily with DJs and renewed energy. Atkinson said Virgin rented several golf carts to help shuttle guests between the resort and the race facility.

In addition to paddock area skybox suites, Virgin had grandstand seating access at the start-finish line.

“We kind of went for it. We sponsored…

GoLocalProv | Politics | 5 Reasons for New Year’s Optimism in 2024

Tuesday, January 02, 2024

Rob Horowitz, MINDSETTER™

Bruce Springsteen PHOTO: File, Mohegan Sun, 2014

For the past eleven years, I’ve written a New Year’s column listing reasons for optimism. Click and see how I did last year.  This year, I do the same. It remains the nature of news and opinion writing that positive developments get short shrift.

As we begin 2024, 5 reasons for optimism are outlined below:

GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE — SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLAST

·      Nearly 200 nations agreed to accelerate the transition away from carbon-producing fossil fuels at the recently concluded COP 28 UN Climate Summit. This sends an important market signal, likely increasing the already robust investment in renewable energy worldwide—and hastening the retreat of capital from the fossil fuels industry. Speeding up the phase out of fossil fuels is essential to limiting the increase in global temperatures to the 1.5% Celsius or 2.7 Fahrenheit that scientists tell us we must to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.

·      Violent crime is on a welcome, strong downward trajectory, returning to the lower levels it was at pre-pandemic.   When the final numbers are totaled, for example, the homicide rate is expected to be 13% lower in 2023 than it was in 2022.  The nation’s cities are experiencing particularly pronounced drops as stepped-up investments in crime prevention, taking illegal guns off the streets, and community policing are paying dividends.

·      Latino immigrants show the same patterns of assimilation as previous large-scale groups of immigrants, such as Italian, Irish and Eastern European emigres. As with previous waves of immigration, today’s immigrants come to our nation to seek a better life for their children, succeed in doing…
