WWE Raw results, recap, grades: War Games match set for Survivor Series after successful Rollins title defense

With one of WWE’s traditional “big four” pay-per-views on the horizon, the promotion used Monday night’s edition of Raw to put in work to build toward in Chicago on Nov. 25. Among those matches that are now set is a War Games match featuring most of Raw’s top stars.

A surprise world heavyweight championship match between champ Seth Rollins and challenger Sami Zayn proved to be just one part of a story that led to the two men teaming with Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso against Judgment Day and JD McDonagh inside the double cage at Survivor Series.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

War Games locked in for Survivor Series

Seth Rollins opened the show, celebrating retaining the world heavyweight championship by beating Drew McIntyre at Crown Jewel. Rollins then called Sami Zayn out to celebrate with him since Zayn prevented Damian Priest from cashing in the Money in the Bank contract after that match. Rollins told Zayn that he visited Adam Pearce and Zayn could have a title shot at any time of his choosing. Zayn initially said he didn’t want to face a champion who was compromised by injury, but Rollins said veterans like them were never 100%, but always gave 100%. Zayn then accepted, saying there was no better time or place than later in the night.

World Heavyweight Championship — Seth Rollins (c) def. Sami Zayn via pinfall with a roll-up. Zayn tried to attack Rollins’ compromised back. That included a match-ending sequence where Zayn locked in a lion tamer and transitioned to a Boston crab. Rollins was able to reverse the submission into a pin, however, and score the three-count to retain his title. After the match, Rollins offered Zayn a…

The Judgment Day secure a stunning victory over 12-time champions on WWE RAW

Finn Balor and Damian Priest defeated The New Day duo of Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston during the latest episode of WWE RAW.

The two teams were involved in a backstage confrontation last week. Hence, a tag team match was made official for this week’s show as The Judgment Day looked to assert their dominance in the tag team division.

The 12-time tag team champions took early control of the bout as they isolated Balor. At one point, Kingston fought out of a double team as Priest collided with Balor by mistake.

The New Day was able to take advantage as Woods hit the diving elbow on Balor. But it wasn’t meant to be, as Priest was there to save the day. He then drove Kingston into the announce table to take him out.

In the closing stages of the match, Woods tried to rally two-on-one, but it was to no avail. Senor Money in the Bank executed the South of Heaven, which was followed by the Coup de Grace by Balor to secure an impressive win.

It will be interesting to see what’s next for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions.

PENGUINS STUNNED BY SENATORS IN OVERTIME, 3-2

BOXSCORE

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were defeated by the Belleville Senators in overtime, 3-2, on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

A goal from Jacob Larsson gave the Senators the comeback victory halfway into the extra session. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (5-4-1-0) still gained a point in the standings thanks to a lights-out performance by its special teams.

A first-period power-play goal from Austin Rueschhoff put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ahead, 1-0. Rueschhoff tipped in a thundering slap shot by Xavier Ouellet at 7:24, to give the Penguins power-play goals in six of their last seven games.

That lead for the Penguins persisted until late in the second period, when Senators forward Angus Crookshank tallied off a faceoff win.

Colin White conjured another man-advantage marker for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with under five minutes left to play. White launched a wrist shot off the crossbar and in, putting the Penguins in a 2-1 lead.

However, the Senators tied the game with an extra-attacker goal with 33.6 seconds remaining in regulation. Garrett Pilon swept in a loose puck, sending the contest to overtime.

Penguins goalie Taylor Gauthier made two strong stops on odd-man rushes in OT, but a rebound collected off his pads by Pilon was ushered back to the blue line for Larsson. Larsson found the back of the net, ending the game.

Gauthier, who was making his season debut for the Penguins, stopped 26 shots. Senators netminder, Leevi Meriläinen, made 27 saves for the Senators.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is back on the ice Friday, Nov. 10, to take on the Syracuse Crunch. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Upstate Medical University Arena. The back-to-back, home-and-home set with the Crunch returns to Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday, Nov. 11. Saturday’s rematch will begin at 6:05 p.m.

Concert review: Jethro Tull entertains followers at Mohegan Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — One of the most unique groups in the history of rock music is still touring in their seventh decade.

Jethro Tull, with their distinctive sound, performed Sunday night at Mohegan Sun Arena as part of their latest global tour.

Led by flutist/singer/songwriter Ian Anderson, 76, the show was broken down into two parts.

A mix of new material and old, including several rarer tunes, from an array of albums, filled the song sets.

The legendary British progressive art rock group, whose music touches on folk, classical, blues, and jazz, has always been theatrical, and songs were accompanied by video on a large screen behind the band.

Anderson was his usual animated self, shuffling around the stage playing his flute, an instrument he introduced to rock ‘n roll and still remains rare for the genre.

Jethro Tull came out with a new album in April and the first two songs in the concert were “Nothing is Easy” and a new version of “We Used to Know,” that the Eagles — which at one time opened for Jethro Tull — used some chords from for “Hotel California.”

“Heavy Horses” was a folky tune, and “Sweet Dream” was an appropriate song for Halloween, with clips of horror characters on the screen.

“Hunt by the Numbers” and an early Christmas number, “Holly Herald,” were followed by another new song, “Wolf Unchained.”

Then came “Mine is the Mountain,” which depicted God on the 2022 album, and “Bourree,” a Bach cover that saw Anderson jamming with bassist David Goodier, who co-sang on the lengthy “Farm on the Freeway.”

After another new number, “The Navigator,” about gods and sailors, was “Zealot Gene,” which is about social media and was on that titled album from two years ago — the group’s first studio album in nearly two decades.

Anderson warned…

New Kids on the Block to play Hartford’s Xfinity Theater in 2024

The New Kids on the Block are back. The now middle-aged pop stars have been a perennial crowd pleaser at Mohegan Sun, but the latest tour, which runs from mid-June to late August 2024, will instead bring them to Hartford’s Xfinity Theater at 7 p.m. on Aug. 2, 2024, the band announced Monday.

The Magic Summer 2024 Tour continues the tradition of bringing other pop stars of the 1980s or ‘90s on the road with the band that includes Joey McIntyre, Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood. This time, the tourmates are Paula Abdul and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

New Kids on the Block has played Mohegan Sun Arena 13 times in the past 15 years, including back-to-back nights in July 2022. Before their successful reunion tour in 2008, they hadn’t played Connecticut since a Toad’s Place gig in 1994, a comedown from when they filled New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum for a show five years earlier.

NKOTB have performed together since they were in their mid-teens (or in McIntyre’s case, 12 years old) and attending school in Dorchester, Massachusetts. They were guided by the Boston-based producer/songwriter Maurice Starr, who’d had an earlier success with New Edition.

All the band members have had solo careers, with McIntyre recently performing at Mohegan Sun in January. Wahlberg also has an impressive film and television acting resume.

Ticket prices have not yet been announced for the show. Presale opportunities are available starting Wednesday, and general on-sale begins Friday at 10 a.m. Details are available at livenation.com.
