WILKES-BARRE, PA – A pair of 13-1 longshots won their $20,000 third and final preliminary harness racing divisions of the Bobby Weiss Series at Pocono Downs for three-year-old trotting colts at Mohegan Pennsylvania on a cool Sunday night (April 23).

Braxten Boyd’s 13-1 winner wasn’t as surprising as it might be otherwise, as the 23-year-old rising star added $28.20 Wentworth Hanover to Sunday victories with $42.20, $28.40, $11.60 and $11.20 shots. Wentworth Hanover, an International Moni gelding trained by Clifton Green for the LCT Stable, got the best post draw of his five-race career and made the most of it, closing for a neck victory over G Load while breaking his maiden in 1:56.2. Favored Moni Book, off wins in the first two legs, set the pace but had to settle for third, a half-length back.

WENTWORTH HANOVER REPLAY

Mark MacDonald used opposite tactics with 13-1 shot Snowman Hanover, and the Bar Hopping gelding drew away in the last quarter while lowering his mark to 1:55.4. Ray Schnittker trains the winner for

Boxing’s newest female phenomenon Mona Ward from St. Louis Missouri is catching the World by storm by her performance in the Team Combat League. Currently Ward is 1-0 in the league. Ward made her debut April 6 against New York.

Ward will go against Los Angeles on April 27 from the Mohegan Sun Casino.

Discussing the fight, Ward stated: I was 5 years old when I first hit my first punching bag”. Ward didn’t start competing until she was 13 years old.

“I got into boxing due to me living down the street from Cherokee boxing in St. Louis . My little brother use to go there for basketball, so I decided to follow him, and I loved it. Mona Ward has over 280 amateur fights.

“My style of boxing is a little like Garry Russell but more like Loma. I look up to Seniesa Estrada. I have a Clarissa shields attitude. My goal in boxing is to be bantamweight champion. I want 5 belts in 5 different weight classes is my ultimate goal”.

In early February Ward went down to Atlanta where they were having the Team Combat League tryouts.

“It was a dream come true for me being picked out of hundreds to be in the Team Combat League. I feel like the league will help me over come my fear of believing I can, but instilling in me I must, and I will. This has been a big change for me. I had to leave my family and my children to train and devote the next 10 weeks to the League.”

Apr. 24—Municipalities’ share of the gaming revenues the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes pay the state would more than double under a bill advanced last week by the legislature’s Appropriations Committee.

The panel voted unanimously to increase the amount transferred annually from the state’s General Fund to the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Fund ― starting with the 2025-26 fiscal year ― to $139,380,000. The money comes from the state’s 25% share of the slot-machine revenue the tribes’ respective casinos ― Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun ― generate.

In recent years, the fund has plateaued at $51.5 million.

The increase endorsed by the Appropriations Committee as part of Raised Bill No. 1213 would restore the fund to its highest level since the 1999-2000 fiscal year, when $135 million was distributed to the state’s 169 cities and towns in the form of grants.

“We’ve been trying to build it back to what it was originally intended to be,” state Sen. Cathy Osten, the Sprague Democrat who co-chairs the committee, said of the fund. “By 2025-26, most towns will have used up their ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds, and the increase in the grants will help bridge the gap.”

Osten has sought to increase the grants since before the state’s 2021 legalization of online casino gaming and sports betting, forms of gambling that have generated additional revenues for the tribes and the state.

The ARPA grants were intended to offset economic losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both of the casino-owning tribes expressed support for the bill bolstering the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Fund.

Southwind Dredge wins Series final; Weiss filles impress

Wilkes-Barre, PA – On a Monday (April 24) afternoon at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania where horses racing up front did not do too well late, the best illustration of that concept came in the $20,000 Championship of the Game Of Pacing Claims Series for $10,000-base claimers, where Southwind Dredge was last at every call but the most important one, thundering by his field to reach the wire first in 1:54.2.

The favored Globaldomination N went to the lead and set a moderate pace, but watching the far turn it was evident that much of the power was out very wide on that bend. Southwind Dredge was widest of all, five-deep as they swung for home, and he was full of pace to defeat Riot, who also closed well but not as well as the winning son of Bettor’s Delight, by a length. Tyler Buter drove the winner for trainer Jason Brewer and owner Barry Franklin.

C Is For Cookie completed a sweep of her three preliminaries in her Weiss Series division for pacing fillies with a 1:52.2 success in her $20,000 division for trainer Linda Toscano and Birnam Wood Farms. The Betting Line filly, out of the dam of Sweet Lou and Bettors Sweet, has been a push-button horse for driver Scott Zeron, responding to requests for a bit more with long and powerful strides.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Electric Light Orchestra music continues to fill the classic rock airwaves even though the British group’s heyday was in the 1970’s.

The Electric Light Orchestra Experience: Evil Woman featuring The American ELO, was a two-hour show at the Mohegan Sun Arena Friday night.

The arena was nearly packed with about 7,000 fans, a sign of how popular ELO music remains despite not taking in the original group.

The concert featuring a 12-member band, including a small orchestra, played most of the group’s hits, with several other tunes as part of the song set.

“Turn to Stone” was followed by the band’s signature song, “Evil Woman,” a Top 10 from the 1975 album “Face the Music.”

“Jungle” from the “Out of the Blue” LP was an appropriate Earth Day song, with a video of animals in a jungle setting.

“Mr. Blue Sky” stayed with the Earth Day theme.

After an intermission, the second set list covered the Top 10 “Shine a Little Love” from 1979 and the catchy “Strange Magic” from 1976 that showcased a sharp guitar intro and cello.

“Last Train to London” showed the band’s British roots.

“Hold on Tight” is actually from the early 1980’s, just making the Top 10 Billboard chart.

Another toe-tapper, the “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head,” which placed No. 9 on the charts in 1974, led to “Confusion” and the party anthem “Do Ya” from 1977.

“Showdown,” “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” and “Roll Over Beethoven” closed the show, the latter obviously predominantly featuring the string section, but also with the guitarists lined up along the front of the stage.

There were four guitarists, including a Jeff Lynne look-alike on lead vocals, four violinists — one who also played the cello — a backup female singer, two keyboardists, and a drummer.

After six years of working together to run ilani Casino Resort in Washington, just north of Vancouver, the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Connecticut-based Mohegan Tribe will end their partnership next year.

The Cowlitz Tribe enlisted the help of the Mohegan Tribe to launch and manage the casino starting in 2017. And, now, in July 2024, the Cowlitze Tribe will assume full management of the property.

According to an article by The Columbian, Cowlitz Indian Tribe Chairwoman Patty Kinswa-Gaiser said in a statement:

“After careful consideration, the Cowlitz Tribal Gaming Authority has recommended, and the Cowlitz Tribal Council has approved, a decision to begin a multi-step process of transitioning ilani from an enterprise managed by the Mohegan Tribe to a self-managed enterprise.”

What’s ahead for ilani Casino in Washington?

According to the Cowlitz tribe, not much will change over the next 15 months. Mohegan will continue to provide management services for the occasion. ilani leadership and staff will stay in place.

Next year, Cowlitz will take over management of the casino. Kinswa-Gaiser said that the transition to self-management of the casino is a natural part of the process. The Mohegan Tribe showed the Cowlitz the casino management ropes. Over the past six years, the Cowlitz has eased into shared management responsibilities.

And, as was the plan, the tribe will overtake total control of the casino’s management. The two tribes will continue their partnership in other partnerships and initiatives, although the Cowlitz gave no specifics. Kinswa Gaiser continued:

“We are forever grateful for the remarkable success and benefits this partnership has brought our tribal members and the Cowlitz community since ilani opened its doors in 2017. We raise our hands to the Mohegan Tribe and will continue the standard of excellence they brought to ilani.”
